Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6! The act of reading has been around for thousands of years, since the invention of the written word. In the earliest years, reading was a skill that only a wealthy, educated segment of society had. Over time, more and more people learned to read and write, and reading came to be the common skill that it is today. Since the first book that was ever written, many authors have made their mark and been remembered for their remarkable work. One such author is Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss. He has authored some of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies.
In addition to being an author, Dr. Seuss was also an illustrator and cartoonist. After publishing his first children’s book, he took a break to illustrate political cartoons and joined the animation and film department in the United States Army. In this role, he wrote, produced and animated several projects and gained recognition for them. Following this, he returned to writing children’s books and how! He went on to write 60 books, a majority of which were critically acclaimed. His work is not only enjoyed by children to this date; it is also a part of many different adaptations in other mediums.
The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading. Given Dr. Seuss’ impact on the reading world, his birthday (March 2) was declared Read Across America Day. This also commences Read Across America Week and Read Across America Month. |

Texas Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the state’s independence declaration. It is an annual legal holiday in Texas, in the United States, on March 2. March 2 also marks Texas Flag Day and Sam Houston Day, although these are special observances rather than legal holidays.
Texas Independence Day celebrations are held in many cities and towns throughout the state. The day is celebrated by festivals that include children’s activities, re-enactments, band music, and chili cook-offs. Other activities include story-telling sessions about how Texas won its independence from Mexico and became a republic during the 19th century. Some state government workers may choose to have a day off on Texas Independence Day as it is a partial staffing day. Many schools have classroom lessons and activities about the Texas Declaration of Independence during this time of the year.
Texas Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. This event marked Texas’ independence from Mexico. Sixty delegates from all over Texas signed the declaration. Its language in many ways parallels the 1776 Declaration of Independence of the United States, which is observed on Independence Day, also known as “the fourth of July”.
The Republic of Texas was annexed to the US by joint resolution of the US Congress nine years after the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. The US Congress then admitted Texas as a constituent state of the Union on December 29, 1845. Texas Independence Day is an official holiday in Texas. Sam Houston Day is also observed on March 2, marking the birthday of the man who led the Texans to victory over Mexican troops at the battle of San Jacinto.

Audrey Upton, a sophomore at Stacey, was recently selected as one of just 10 students worldwide to attend the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) Caregiver Youth Leadership Program here in San Antonio. This prestigious program gave Audrey the chance to develop important skills such as understanding grief, sharing her personal story, and learning about scholarships and post-high school opportunities. It also helped her build strong leadership abilities. During the trip, Audrey visited the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she participated in writing workshops led by Professor Porter. These workshops helped her improve her writing and discover new ways to express herself. The group also had a great time working together in the Great Escape Room challenge.
The highlight of the trip was being invited as VIP guests to the San Antonio Rodeo, where Audrey and her fellow students were honored as military kids. This experience gave Audrey a deeper understanding of the challenges military children face, especially those with injured, sick, or ill parents. Since returning from the program, Audrey has been inspired to make a difference in her school and community. She now serves as Sophomore Class President, is involved in Student2Student (S2S), is a member of the Student Council, and plays on the Stacey golf team. Audrey is more committed than ever to advocating for causes that matter to her, especially the struggles of military families. Audrey’s experience at the MCEC Caregiver Youth Leadership Program has motivated her to push herself further and continue making a positive impact on those around her.

Jr. High Students Shine on the Dance Floor!
By: Eliana Flores, 10th grade
The Jr. High dance, hosted by S2S (Student2Student) for their annual Valentine's Day celebration, took place on Thursday, February 13th, from 5 to 7 PM in the Stacey cafeteria. S2S ensured the middle schoolers had an unforgettable time with a variety of delicious concessions, including chips, pizza, sodas, and even chocolate-covered strawberries, sold by the junior class! There were also fun activities like making friendship bracelets. A big shoutout to S2S for organizing such a well-decorated event, complete with a fantastic playlist featuring songs like Fein! The dance gave students the perfect chance to let loose and show off their best moves, including impressive worm performances on the dance floor!

Multiple Perspectives
One keyway we aim to foster critical thinking in our students is by encouraging them to consider multiple perspectives.
Multiple Perspectives asks students to consider how another person would think about a topic. By encouraging children to view issues or topics from different angles, we help them develop a well-rounded understanding of the world around them.
Sentence Starters for Multiple Perspectives:
How might a professional in the field view ____ differently from the average person?
What opposing opinions have been voiced about ____? |
