A short message from the pediatric infectious disease doctor, Tess Barton, who has been fighting viruses for seventeen years.  She’s advising area schools about COVID-19 protocol and safety measures.

We feel this message is important with the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday and COVID-19 cases on the rise.

Volleyball Wraps up Strange Season

by: Ariana Flores, Senior

Alternate text

This year's 2020 Stacey volleyball season was one to remember. From having a whole new team to the challenges faced from COVID-19, volleyball coach, Mr. Flores made it possible for his girls to have the best season.

Asked in an interview with Coach Flores, he was able to answer some questions on how the season went and all the obstacles the team faced. He said “This season was very different from previous years and the main reason was due to COVID-19. We had to play with face masks on and a lot of the etiquette like switching benches, shaking hands, captains meeting, and the coin flip for games was impacted.” Because of their change from the season start date from August

3rd to September 7th, Flores says there were obstacles.  Further, the fact that this season's team was new and so young and inexperienced, he had to create new goals to meet. Flores says “Our goals for this year were to just get better at who we were and how we played.”

On a usual volleyball season you have at least a month to prepare for tournaments, pre-games and scrimmages to get ready for district. Because of the season start date, Flores says it was one of their biggest adjustments to make. Flores says “Usually we have about a month’s worth of games and tournaments to prepare but due to our school being in a COVID-19 hotspot we only had four days of practice and then we had to play our first district game.” The struggle to have such a delay of the season and not a lot of preparation is hard, but still, with every might, the Lady Eagles showed up with determination. Over time Coach says that the girls had improved so much and “...feel that we made tremendous progress towards goals even though our record did not show it.”

What is the Frances Hesselbein Program?!

by: Cayla Bren, junior

Alternate text
Alternate text

Last week was our Stacey S2S’s last meeting with MCEC for the Frances Hesselbein Program, (a program for young leaders) officially earning the program $200. S2S members Mikalah Hernandez, Alyssa Berg, Christian Kumpf, and Cayla Bren all participated in the program. Junior Alyssa Berg said, “my experience was really great… I feel like I know how to be a better leader and what I need to do, like the steps I need to take, to make it happen.” Sophomore Mikalah Hernandez said, “My experience with the Frances Hesselbein project definitely helped me view things differently especially on how to be a leader. There’s way more to being a leader than I originally thought it took. The things I took away from this will help me grow as a person, leader, and friend. I’m very grateful to be part of it and would love to do it again.”

Virtual Friendship Connections:

Students in Interpersonal Studies did a quick activity to get to know their virtual classmates.  They had 2 minutes with each student to answer questions like: what kind of animal would you be and why, what do you value in a friendship, and where were you born and where have you lived. This virtually adapted activity is great for teaching  communication in the friendship unit they are completing.

Here is your chance to honor a veteran! The Stacey S2S club is selling wreaths that will be placed on a veteran's grave on December 19th. Each wreath is only $15. Not only will you be honoring a veteran, but you are helping our club with our ONE and ONLY fundraiser this year. The main mission of s2s (student 2 student) is to welcome and help the new student transition into our school. It always helps to have a little $ to splurge on our new eagles. You can buy online with the link provided, but if you would like to place one on a particular grave, please reach out to Mrs. Duron at duron.e@lacklandisd.net as this type of purchase requires a different transaction.

How Do You Discover a Comet Without Ever Having Seen It?

Probably the best-known comet in the world, Halley's Comet was never seen by Edmund Halley, because he died 16 years before it appeared in the sky again.  Halley studied one comet that seemed to appear every 76 years. In 1705 he predicted that the comet would appear in 1758--and it did.  At its fastest speed, Halley's comet travels 2.9 million miles (4.7 million kilometers) a day.  At its slowest, it covers more than 53,600 miles (86,400 kilometers) a day.  Halley's comet will be seen from Earth again in 2061.

Stacey High School’s Mock Election

By: Grace O’Brien, sophomore

The students of Stacey High School held a mock election two weeks ago, and the event also counted as an exercise in social studies classes. The mock election allowed students to learn about the country’s real election and about the candidates who could

potentially lead the nation. Mr. Staples, Mr. Hernandez and Ms. Loewenstein all did activities to teach their students about the election. Mr. Staples had his students research the policies and views of the candidates. He explained that it was important

students understand the government and how it works, because our freedoms depend on that understanding. Mr. Hernandez did a similar activity, and moderated a debate between the sides of both candidates. Mr. Hernandez also explained the importance of

learning about the election, saying “The variety of issues we discussed in each class definitely will affect the student population...It most likely will influence whether or not

those that can vote in 2024 will do so.”

Students were sent a google form as a way to vote in the schools election, where they could also point out what they thought was the most important topic. Former Vice President Joe Biden won the student election, with 50% of the votes going to him.

Current President Donald Trump got 35% of votes, and a shared 5% went to the Libertarian and Green parties, with the last 9% of votes being write-ins. Of the issues presented, students thought that COVID-19 was the most important issue in the election.

Social justice was the second most chosen, while economy and broken government were in a very close third position.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Hearts Apart Deployment group serves any student whose parent(s) are in any stage of the deployment process (or remote assignment) within the school year.  The group is counselor facilitated and takes place both during school (PK-1st grade) and after school (2nd – 5th grades).  This year we meet, as a group, once a month. During this time your child will be surrounded with other students who are also in this transitional time.  This can be important in helping your child understand that they are not alone through this period.  The counselors plan fun & educational activities, projects and/or games during the meeting times.   Second grade – fifth grade students meet afterschool, once a month with Ms. Dominguez.  Pre-K -1st grade students meet with Mr. Flores during the school day.

If your child is in grades 2nd -5th and is interested in participate in this afterschool group please contact Ms. Dominguez at: email- dominguez.j@lacklandisd.net or 210-357-5054.

If your child is in PK-1st grade, please contact Mr. Flores at: email- flores.m@lacklandisd.net or 210-357-5106.
