DRIVING AND CHILD SAFETY Provided by Officer Shane Kinman, JBSA School Resource Officer With the school year well on its way, we’d like to remind everyone to drive smart and obey all traffic laws while driving on the installation and especially around the schools and housing areas. Vehicle drivers are required to slow down to the posted speed limit within a school zone, 20 MPH on Selfridge and 15 MPH on Kenley and in all base housing. Drivers should be able to stop in time at that speed if a child should dart out in front of them. Drivers are also required to stop on both sides of the road when school bus stop signs are out and red lights are flashing. Vehicle drivers must be observant and obey all speed limits, traffic signs, crossing guards, and other signals including those on school transport vehicles to promote safety within a school or child safety zone. Just in case the concern alone is not enough to ensure you drive safely, please see the list below showing some common violations and fee’s encountered by Law Enforcement in regards to pedestrian and school zone safety.

GUARD / POLICE OFFICER $100.00 4 Points According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), between 2004 and 2013, 116 pedestrians and 9 bicyclists were killed while traveling on their way to school. There were more school-age pedestrians killed between the hours of 7 and 8 a.m. and between 3 and 4 p.m than any other hours of the day. To further enhance school transportation safety, NHTSA offers the following traffic tips for everyone (motorists, children and their parents): Walking to school is safer when children: · Walk with an adult, responsible older sibling, or in a group. · Walk focused and alert. Never use electronics when crossing the street. · Pay attention to their surroundings and don’t play with, push or shove others. · Cross at a corner, in a crosswalk, or with a pedestrian WALK signal. · Stop and look left-right-left for all traffic, including bicycles, before crossing. Cross only when it is clear. · Wear bright colors and/or use lights or reflective gear to be more visible to motorists. Biking to and from school is safer when children and adults alike: · Wear and buckle a properly fit helmet every ride. · Wear bright colors and/or use lights or reflective wear to be more visible to motorists. · Ride focused and alert—never using electronics or both ear buds while riding. Around the District The LISD 2019 - 2020 school year kicked off with our annual breakfast then Convocation welcoming all district employees back with inspirational words from Superintendent Dr. Burnie Roper, followed by team building and a week of intensive training and preparation. Ready to Soar. We would like to thank Mrs. Brock, Mr. James Flores, Mr. Michael Richard, Ms. Roberta Stege, Mrs. Tanya Prescher, Mrs. Elizabeth Morales, our 18 student zombies, and teachers who allowed us the use of classroom spaces for helping us engage in the Escape Room Activity – DeZombify your students. This turned out to be an excellent way to start the school year through team building and getting to know each other. Remember – “People Are Our Priority.”

Press Release
AUSTIN – The Thompson Executive Leadership Institute in Austin, Texas has announced that Dr. Burnie Roper, Superintendent at Lackland Independent School District, is the recipient of a scholarship to attend the 27th annual Superintendent Academy, a nationally known advanced leadership development program for school superintendents. The twenty-five superintendents in the 2019-2020 Academy were chosen from a list of nominees from Texas and surrounding states. The Thompson Executive Leadership Institute is a nationally known learning center of academies and advanced leadership training systems. The goal of the institute is for school executives to come together to test ideas, discover new concepts and information, build networks, and engage in face to face interactions with session leaders and each other. Membership in the Academy is competitive and by invitation only. Many more superintendents were nominated that were accepted into the Academy. Dr. Roper was nominated by school leaders in Texas, met a set of rigorous screening criteria, and was judged by the screening committee to have a leadership skill set that will add value to the discussions in a “think tank” of peers. The scholarship pays all academic costs including a field trip to attend leadership development sessions at Columbia University and visits to several New York City schools. The purpose of the school visits is to study the strategies and methods those schools have found to be successful in educating students who have known nothing but poverty for their entire lives. The Academy will host a three-day Visioning session in the spring for Academy superintendents and their boards. There they will be led through joint leadership training and planning activities applicable to their individual districts. These district leaders will also meet with other leaders from similar-sized districts to share ideas for increasing student achievement and developing a vision for the future of their schools.
The Academy takes on key issues that make a difference in the lives of students, in the success of campuses and districts, and in the practice of educational administration. The Academy provides administrators instant access to peer networks, experts in the field, research, seminal articles and an array of other resources for professional growth and/or problem solving. Stacey Happenings Congratulations to Lackland ISD and Stacey Jr/Sr High School for winning an AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from the College Board. Stacey is one of 685 secondary schools out of 18,000 worldwide (and 44 in Texas) to earn the distinction, which recognizes female representation in computer science. Mrs. Baltazar's English classes wrote 6 word memoirs inspired by Hemingway’s famous memoir; “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.” The memoirs reflect the diverse group of dreamers and thinkers here at Virginia Stacey.
Freshman Algebra students go on a scavenger hunt to solve multi-step equations. Elementary Happenings Elementary Summer Art Camp students adorn the Lackland Elementary with outdoor murals that line the walkway leading to the cafeteria. They did an amazing job working as a team painting vibrant scenes of butterflies, flowers and other things. The heat was on so we made sure to stay hydrated and take plenty of breaks throughout the process. There is one section left to do. Stay tuned for what the Art Club has in store for us.
Meet the teacher at Lackland Elementary School was a great success! New and returning students came to meet their new teacher and see the classroom for the school year! Our amazing teachers worked hard to prepare and welcomed parents with an abundance of information and reassurance.
A team of Lackland Elementary teachers attended a Whole Brain Teaching Conference at Van Raub Elementary in Boerne, TX.
This was led by Founder, Chris Biffle. He kinesthetically taught us strategies for classroom management, character education, and social emotion responsibility. It was a fantastic day filled with tons of great learning!

Lunchroom Gossip 😉 Amelie from Mrs. Rodriguez’s first grade class raised her hand at lunch today. When I approached she asked “Who made this food?” I replied that the cafeteria staff had cooked the meal and she asked me to “please please please thank them” for her “because it is just so wonderful!” PTSO Spot light Thank you to our awesome PTSO for sharing these back to school images!
