Around the District

Parents and teachers came out Thursday morning and lined the breezeways to cheer on their children as they walked to class celebrating the Month of the Military Child! It was a wonderful way for them to show their appreciation for all the kids endure being a child of our exceptional parents who serve our country.

Stacey Prom 2021!

The Stacey prom was outdoors at Stapleton Park here on base on Saturday. Students enjoyed grilled hamburgers and danced to the music of a DJ in the pavilion. Thanks to all who made it happen including Ms. Street, Ms. Strahan, Ms. Polis, grill masters Dr. Roper & Mr. Shelby, Mr. Keller & Ms. MK, Ms. Tarvin and resource officer Ms. Koscinski.

Last week student volunteers from Stacey helped make fleece blankets for The Children’s Shelter. This service project was hosted by Nevaeh Brown. The teacher, Mrs. Duron purchased supplies, while Nevaeh helped organize, advertise, recruit people, and instructed the group on how to make the blankets. With teamwork and dedication the group was able to finish five blankets within just a few hours.

For the past few weeks there has been a student lead service project, with the project being focused on donation efforts to a local animal shelter in the city. The student-led effort was aimed at providing treats and donations to the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services. This was done by a gathering volunteers to bake homemade dog treats over the past 2 weeks. These treats were made from ingredients provided by the student leading the donation effort, recruiting volunteers by making school wide announcements and reaching out to teachers to speak to their students and encourage their students to help in the effort. With a multitude of students volunteering, we were able to distribute all ingredients to volunteers to bake treats for dogs in need. These volunteers also put a few additional donations together that would be taken to the shelter. These donations were picked up by Kayl Murray, the student leader, and delivered to the shelter. The dogs loved the treats and the shelter was appreciative of the donation.

Hello teachers and students! Your high school student council would like to announce a new challenge for our springtime plant lovers - The Green Thumb Challenge! As an effort to promote upcycling, student council is using cut plastic bottles for pots to grow beautiful flowers.  We’ve set up a competition to see who can grow the healthiest, tallest, and most beautiful flower for the springtime. To enter into this contest click the following link where you will be asked to enter your name, e-mail and grade/staff title: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-3WufEDZDZKXF2yMzIf5leK1cJFQ54iN6sfTCULVTQU/edit

The last date to sign up is Tuesday, April 20th. Once you have entered, you will receive an email about information on the plant’s maintenance - watering, sunlight, etc. Planted seeds may be picked up from the band hall any time from April 21-23. Then, let the challenge begin!  On May 12th, all participants will upload a picture of their flower with a ruler beside it (to show height) and the prize basket of gardening goodies will be given to the gardener with the greenest thumb!

For questions regarding this challenge please contact Mrs. Brock (5112) or Ariana Flores.

Testing Notice

In April and May, STAAR and STAAR EOC exams will be administered on-campus, online, using district laptops. All students who are on-campus on their exam administration dates are required to test. Please check your email regularly for more information detailing this year’s STAAR and STAAR EOC exams.

In 1768, Captain Cook set out as a leader of a scientific expedition to Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean, from where scientists planned to watch the planet Venus passing in front of the sun--a very rare event.  After this, Captain Cook had orders to explore the continent of Australia, which he knew lay somewhere in the South Pacific.

From Tahiti, Cook sailed in his ship, the Endeavour, all the way to New Zealand, carefully charting the coastline.  He went on to Australia, landing first at Botany Bay and then sailing north toward the Great Barrier Reef, where his boat shipwrecked.  After making repairs, Captain Cook sailed back to England, arriving in 1771.

For his second voyage in 1772, Captain Cook took two ships, the Resolution and the Adventure.  On this journey, he sailed further into the Pacific than any European had before him.   The ships sailed close to the Antarctic Circle, meeting many dangers such as icebergs, pack-ice, ferocious winds, and freezing fog.  Captain Cook also charted Tonga and Easter Island and discovered New Caledonia.  On his journey home the explorer discovered the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia in the Atlantic.

Lackland ISD Proposes to Adopt New PK Curriculum

This year, school districts across Texas are participating in adopting a pre-kindergarten curriculum that aligns with the Texas Pre-kindergarten Guidelines.  Our Pre-Kindergarten team has been hard at work examining various resources that are state-approved for our consideration.  After months of reviewing and deliberating available options, we have decided to propose adopting Frog Street PreK 2020 as our new curriculum resource.   Lackland ISD is currently using an older adoption of the Frog Street PK curriculum.  Teachers feel that the additional resources and revisions in the 2020 version will provide even greater support to our students.  We will present the proposed adoption to our Board of Trustees on April 27, 2021, at our regular Board Meeting.  We invite you to preview the curriculum contents using the links below and contact Dr. Tonya Hyde at hyde.t@lacklandisd.net if you have any questions.

The month of April (also known as the Month of the Military Child) is especially important here at Lackland Elementary.  With support and funding from our administrative team, we coordinated a book fair where every student gets to choose one free book to keep.  This is our small way of showing appreciation and admiration for our military students and their selfless service. There's nothing better than the look of joy on their faces when they get their new books!

Hi!  My name is Miss Coffey and one of my goals this school year has been to improve parent/teacher communication in regards to music.  The survey below is a tool to measure this goal.  Please take a few moments to complete at your convenience.  With the exception of student grade level, this survey is anonymous.  You may leave additional comments for me as well at the end of the survey.

4th grade Writing Camp

Students were able to build forts while working on the Writing Process.

Writing Boot Camp: Mission Possible!

Fourth Grade students became soldiers to complete top secret assignments such as rescuing fragments and run-ons, shaping up sentences, cracking paragraph codes and rescuing compositions that had fallen behind enemy lines. Soldiers were honored with medals of honor for their bravery and distinguished service!

“Emelynn from Mrs. Crawford’s 5th grade class wrote an amazing poem about being a military child! Way to Go, Emelynn!!”

 Being a military child.

Sitting outside on a warm sunny day

Time to pack your bag and hit the highway.

Emotions swirling in your brain.

Thinking about all the friends you may or may not gain.

Having a purple up parade

All you can hear is hip hip hooray.

Parents go away.

You say it's unfair

Because you can't bear.

The thought of moving away

Dad came back.

All of the sadness you now lack.

The day is here.

The moving truck is near.

Love who you are

Even if you travel far

And appreciate being a military child.

Students in Mrs. Guerrero’s 1st Grade class working with their SFA teams & math partners.  I am so proud of their hard work and great team effort!
