86th Texas Legislature Update

Our focus this week from the 86th Texas Legislature is on HB 684 and HB 706. Please see the information below.

HB 684 -Relating to training requirements for public school nurses and certain other school personnel regarding seizure recognition and related first aid.

A parent or guardian of a student with a seizure disorder is allowed to seek care for the student’s seizures while the students is at school or participating in a school activity. This is done by the parent or guardian submitting to the school district a copy of a seizure management and treatment plan developed by the parent/guardian and the physician responsible for the student’s seizure treatment. Every school nurse employed by a school district must complete a TEA approved online course of instruction regarding managing students with seizure disorders. This course must include information about seizure recognition and related first aid. A school district employee, other than a school nurse, whose duties at a school include regular contact with students must complete a TEA approved online course regarding awareness of students with seizure disorders that includes information about seizure recognition and related first aid.

HB 706 -Relating to the eligibility of certain children with hearing impairments for audiology services under the school health and related services program.

Any child is eligible to receive audiology services under the school health and related services program if the child: Is 20 years of age or younger; Has a disability or chronic medical condition; Is eligible for Medicaid benefits; and Has been prescribed services under: An individualized education program created under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); or a plan created under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
