Fiesta comes to Lackland Elementary School!

Wow what an exciting event! We were so lucky to be visited by not only King Antonio XCIX - Mr. Barton “Bart” Simpson but also King El Rey Feo LXXIII - Mr. Augustine “Augie” Cortez and Lt. General Brad Webb, AETC/CC.

Students and teachers wore Fiesta wear and crowns as they cheered the enormous entourage which included Queens, Princesses, many Fiesta Dignitaries and the 2022 Military Ambassadors. The Green Goblin even showed up to spoil the event but Spiderman came and saved the day!

Recognized were our outstanding 5th graders Mark Berg and Amiah Salgado along with the 31 year elementary teacher Mrs. Helen Solis who is retiring. Mrs. Leija and Mrs. Greeness were also awarded a plaque and medals for the entire school!

Viva Fiesta! Viva San Antonio!

Lackland ISD Extends Application Eligibility for Non-resident Transfers

Each year Lackland ISD accepts a limited number of student transfers.  Transfer acceptance is based on the number of available slots at each grade level and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Potential transfer students must meet transfer eligibility criteria to be considered.  Because a Non-resident Transfer is a privilege rather than a right, it is important to stress that transfer students will be subject to the Non-resident Transfer Agreement.

On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, Lackland ISD’s Board of Trustees approved Superintendent Dr. Burnie Roper’s recommendation to extend non-resident transfer exemptions.  Under the newly adopted Board policy, Lackland ISD shall accept a transfer request only for a student who is a military dependent, a child of a District employee, or a child of a civilian employed on Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA).

Parents may apply for a non-resident transfer under one of the following exemptions.

*The parent is serving on active military duty and is assigned to JBSA.

*The parent is retired from active military duty, regardless of when the parent retired or whether the child was enrolled in the District when the parent retired.

*The resident District student becomes a non-resident during the course of a school year, and the parent separates from active military duty in a manner other than retirement.

*The parent is employed by the District or is a civilian employed on JBSA.

All applications will be processed electronically.  All requests will be checked for accuracy.  Any false or missing information may result in your application not being processed and/or denied

Effective Monday, March 28, 2022, Lackland ISD will be accepting non-resident transfer applications online.  To apply for non-resident transfer consideration, please complete the application using this link: https://lacklandtxc.scriborder.com/

Robotics in the Community

On Saturday March 26th, members of Stacey’s all-female robotics team, Team Marvel**Us, demonstrated their award winning robot at the “Girls in STEM” event hosted by the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT).

In attendance were members of the staff US Congressman Juaquin Castro who said “Far too often, girls are discouraged from entering the STEM industry. This must change.

During #WomensHistoryMonth, my office attended Port San Antonio’s ‘Girls in STEM’ showcase to celebrate young innovators shaping the future of tech through robotics, 3-D printing and gaming.”

Also present was City Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia who took some time to check out the girl’s robot and even took it for a spin after some instruction from 8th grader Hayden Walker and 11th grader Amy Kreil.

Congratulations to Maria Orencia and Gaby Leon for making the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State team. Maria received Academic All-State 2nd Team and Gaby was Honorable Mention. This is an incredible honor for both seniors as it shows their commitment to excellence not only on the court but most importantly in the classroom.

San Antonio...the rose of the South Texas!

San Antonio was named by a 1691 Spanish expedition for the Portuguese priest Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13. The city contains five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions, including The Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which together were designated UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2015.

Other notable attractions include the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld,  and the Alamo Bowl.

Commercial entertainment includes Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan's Wonderland amusement parks.

According to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. It is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the U.S.

Take time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and delicious foods of San Antonio !!

Big Bend National Park

Named for the sweeping curve of the Rio Grande, this remote natural treasure covers 800,000 acres accessed by 200 miles of primitive trails, 112 miles of paved roads, and more than 150 miles of dirt roads.  The Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River flows through and beyond the Big Bend National Park.  The park lies within the Chihuahuan Desert, where river runners float through the famous canyons of Santa Elena, Boquillas, and Mariscal and the rugged, remote Lower Canyons.   Nature lovers discover an amazing diversity of plants, cactus, and animals in the canyons.  Black bears and mountain lions roam the Chisos Mountains, where hikers explore wooded highlands above 7,000 feet.

Homer Wilson was a pioneer Big Bend sheep and goat rancher.  One of his line camps--including foreman's house, storage room and circular corral--preserves a glimpse of remote ranch life in the early 1900s.

Located ouside the park's northern entrance, Hallie's Hall of Fame Museum houses momentos and historic photos commemorating Hallie Stillwell, one of Big Bend's most colorful characters.  As a pioneer ranch woman, justice of the peace and author, Ms. Stillwell epitomized the region's grit, tenacity, and rugged individualism.

Enjoy the discovery of Texas outdoors!

Fact or Fiction?

Using a pacifier causes speech and language problems

►Unclear

The verdict on this issue may still be out. Prolonged pacifier use has been linked to dental problems and increased ear infections, both of which can have a negative impact on speech and language learning. However, a couple of recent studies examining the speech (pronunciation) of children with prolonged pacifier use found different results. One study found no difference in the speech (pronunciation) of children who used a pacifier for a long period. However, in 2010, another study found increased odds of speech disorders among children who  used a pacifier for 3 or more years or sucked their fingers extensively.

Boys talk later than girls.

►True

It is true that boys produce their first words and sentences later than girls. However, these differences are only in terms of a matter of a few months. There is a normal range within which children acquire certain language milestones. “Girls tend to be on the earlier end, and boys on the later end, of this age range”, according to researchers Seyda Özçalskan and Susan Goldin-Meadow (2010). Therefore, boys are not actually delayed in their language development, just a little behind girls. So if a young boy is really lagging behind in his speech and language development, don’t assume that it’s because he’s a boy and that it’s perfectly normal. He may require some speech and language intervention.

Twins are at greater risk for language delay.

►True

In a review of the research regarding the development of twins, Karen Thorpe summarized the following in her 2006 article:

Twins, particularly male twins, have higher risk of language delay.

Language delay is usually mild, and it seems to reduce by middle childhood.

There is great variation in language scores among twins

Learning two languages at the same time (bilingualism) causes language delays in young children.

►False

Children learning two languages at the same time will go through the same developmental patterns in both of their languages and at roughly the same time as children learning one language. While the vocabulary of each individual language might be smaller when counted separately, the total vocabulary of bilingual children is comparable to monolingual children when both languages are taken into account. Sometimes young children learning two languages mix words or grammar from their two languages, known as “code mixing” or “code switching”. This is very normal and does not indicate that the child is having difficulty with language learning. There may actually be benefits from bilingual language learning, as children who are fluent in two languages have strengths in “metalinguistic skills” (the ability to think about language), as well as in cognitive skills, such as attention.
