September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month
The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month

https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

TEA Announces 2022-23 Purple Star Campus Designations

Purple Star Designations highlight strong school support for military-connected students and families

AUSTIN, Texas – September 22, 2022 – The Texas Education Agency today announced the designation of 179 Texas public schools as Purple Star Campuses for the 2022-2023 school year.

Established in 2019 by the 86th Texas Legislature, the Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes Texas public schools that provide high quality supports to meet the unique needs of military-connected students and their families. To be eligible, campuses must designate a campus-based military liaison, create and maintain an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families, institute a campus transition program for military-connected students, and support a military family assistance initiative.

This year’s Purple Star designees comprise the largest group in the program’s history, nearly quadrupling the number of campuses designated last year. Nearly 200 campuses across the state applied for the designation, reflecting the commitment of Texas educators to bring the needs of military-connected students and families to the forefront. The Lone Star State is second nationally in the number of military-connected students it educates in public schools.

“I am extremely proud of the work these schools are doing to meet the needs of students and families that have sacrificed an incredible amount in service to our country,” said Texas Education Commissioner, Mike Morath. “We recognize the challenges military-connected students often face when transitioning schools. However, these campuses are committed to maximizing the availability of high-quality supports to make that transition easier and to help set these students up for success.”

All Texas public school campuses are eligible to receive a Purple Star designation, regardless of the size of their military-connected student population. Applications are accepted on an annual basis, with the designation lasting two years. To learn more about the criteria and application process, visit TEA’s Purple Star Campus Designation webpage. For the list of this year’s designees, click the link below.

Congratulations

Lackland Elementary and Stacey Jr./Sr. High School!

We celebrate National I.T. Professionals Day on the third Tuesday of every September, on September 20 this year, to recognize the technical experts — network engineers, system administrators, database admins, ethical hackers, and many more types of I.T. professionals — that make sure our computer systems run smoothly. It takes a solid set of skills and talents to fill the shoes of an I.T. pro so, today, we say thanks to the people who come to fix our devices when they stop working the way they should — the behind-the-scenes operators without whom we’d be back in front of an archaic chalkboard, doing things the hard way.

Thank you LISD technology team!

Around the District

The Fall survey is coming!  Parents, students, and staff will have the opportunity to complete this survey starting, Monday, October 3, 2022, through October 21,2022.  Your responses will remain completely confidential, which means that no one at this school will ever see your individual responses. (Panorama Education) is managing this process to ensure security. The results of these surveys will help us better understand the perceptions of students, families, and teachers in our school. Your participation is key to supporting the vision and mission of Lackland ISD.  Thank you for your support!

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

WELCOME TO:  Big Bend National Park:  Southwestern Texas

Big Bend National Park in Southwestern Texas was established on June 12, 1944.  The park covers 1,250 square miles.

Things to see in Big Bend National Park are:
     *  Santa Elena Canyon
     *  Castolon Historic District
     *  Mule Ears Overlook
     *  Homer Wilson Ranch
     *  Tuff Canyon

Things to do in Big Bend National Park are:
     *  Hiking
     *  Camping
     *  Rafting
     *  Backpacking
     *  Climbing
     *  Bicycling
     *  Birding

More than 800,000 acres in all, Big Bend National Park encompasses a seemingly endless expanse of forested mountains, impossibly sheer canyons, and rugged desert wilderness just across the Rio Grande from Mexico in West Texas.  Here, the river winds south and then suddenly veers north in a great horseshoe curve before turning south again, creating the "Big Bend".

In 1899, geologist Robert Hill led a party that took three months to navigate the Rio Grande from Presidio, upriver from the modern-day
park, to Langtry, the home of the the legendary Judge Roy Bean.

At lower-lying elevations, there are 70 species of cactus found in Big Bend...MORE than ANY other national park.  The park provides a habitat for more than 1,200 plant species, many found NOWHERE else on earth and more than 400 species of birds which are many more than can be found in any other national park.  It is also possible, along the "jungle-like" stretches, for visitors to see some of the most rare felines in the United States--the ocelot, the jaguarundi, and the jaguar.
