National Volunteer Week 2023

This week, we honor the selfless spirit of Americans who volunteer, and we sound the call for more Americans to seize opportunities to serve their communities.

Every day across America, volunteers are performing extraordinary acts of service.  They are repairing and rebuilding homes, educating our youth, and connecting people to jobs.  They are supporting veterans and military families, helping to run our elections, and combating climate change.  In the aftermath of natural disasters, neighbors volunteer to restore communities and cook hot meals.  And amid a pandemic, volunteers have stepped forward to help administer vaccines and provide lifesaving resources to people in need.

Volunteering defines America.  Our Nation is a place where light triumphs over darkness, where we seek to lift everyone up, and where we lead not by the example of our power but by the power of our example.  As those who volunteer know firsthand, service also benefits the volunteer.  It can teach important skills, help build professional networks, and provide an empowering sense of purpose.  Volunteering brings people together, uniting us around our common belief in the dignity and equality of every person and giving us a chance to learn from others we might otherwise never meet.

Thank you to the many volunteers at Lackland ISD. Your sevice is commended!

Stacey Flashback: Brandon Armstead

By Bryce Richardson, sophomore

Brandon graduated from Stacey in 2016, where he was the photography editor for the yearbook and was also on the CyberPatriot team.  Brandon went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from the UTSA and he now works as a data analytics report writer for Hallmark University.

When did you go to Stacey Jr/Sr High?

I started at Stacey as an eighth grader in 2012 and graduated in 2016.

What clubs or activities did you participate in?

I was in CyberPatriot, which introduced me to various technologies and concepts and trained me to think critically during competitions.

Do you have any favorite memories of going to school here?

One of my favorite memories from Stacey was Mr. Keller’s photography class. I learned a great deal about photography and photoshop, blending technical skills with creativity.

What did you do after graduation?

I attended the University of Texas at San Antonio and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems. Currently, I'm pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration at Hallmark University.

Did you play any sports?

Yes, I ran track my senior year, mostly running the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Do you also work while you are getting your master's degree?

Yes, I also work at Hallmark University, a small trade school in San Antonio that offers accelerated programs in Aviation, Business, Information Technology, and Nursing. My current position is a data analytics report writer.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is the feeling of accomplishment after building or updating a report. It requires critical thinking and patience but I feel fantastic afterwards.

What do you do in your free time, hobbies etc?

My hobbies include painting, which I find relaxing after a long day, and running on the San Antonio Greenways while listening to music.

Do you have any advice for the senior class members set to graduate next month?

My advice for senior class members is to remember that it's okay to not have everything in life figured out. College is a time for self-discovery and exploring different hobbies and career paths. It's normal for feelings and plans to change, so don't stress if they do.

THANK YOU Brandon!
