Trinity University and the Department of Education have announced the 19 finalists for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching awards.  Congratulations to all of the participating districts and Distinguished Educators.

Local teachers chosen as distinguished educators by Trinity’s Department of Education

A total of 19 exceptional teachers in the San Antonio area have been chosen as distinguished educators and finalists for the 2018-19 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes outstanding performance in public education.

The distinguished educators will be honored and the two recipients of the award will be announced on Friday, March 22, in the Stieren Theater on Trinity’s campus at the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching ceremony, sponsored by the Whataburger. Mandy Manning will give the Whataburger Foundation Lecture at 4:30 p.m. The 2018 National Teacher of the Year, Manning is an English teacher at Joel E. Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash., where she works with newly arrived refugee and immigrant students.

New this year from Whataburger, one of the 19 finalists will receive the What-A-Teacher award at their home campus on Friday, April 5.

The distinguished educators were nominated by area school districts for their commitment and passion to education. Among the criteria for inclusion on the list is outstanding classroom performance, leadership in the school and school district, leadership in the education profession, and outstanding community service.

 

Since 1982, Trinity University, through its Department of Education, has recognized and honored teaching as a profession and those outstanding persons who distinguish themselves in the profession. A panel of San Antonio business and community leaders will select the winners. All finalists receive a crystal apple, a cash award, and a proclamation from the City of San Antonio, signed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg ’99.

Lackland ISD Celebrates National School Breakfast Week

 

Our Child Nutrition Team partnered with military members from Joint Base San Antonio’s 59th MDTS Nutritional Medicine Flight in celebrating National School Breakfast Week.  National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the school breakfast program for all children.  Our festivities this year included fun activities, coloring pages, informational posters, and interactive presentations designed to help students learn about proper nutrition and the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. 

Studies have consistently shown that students who eat breakfast benefit nutritionally and educationally. Starting the day with breakfast is associated with improved academic performance, improved classroom behavior, attentiveness, and fewer visits to the nurse.

Lackland ISD encourages students to start their day strong with a well-balanced, free breakfast in one of our cafeterias every school day.  Breakfast is served daily from 7:15 A.M. until 7:45 A.M.  The breakfast menu is available online at: https://www.lacklandisd.net/departments/operations/child-nutrition-services

The Surveys are coming!

We are excited to announce that the spring surveys are right around the corner!  Please be on the lookout in your email for your opportunity to share your thoughts.  We are currently working to improve in those areas that were identified in the fall survey, and your continual feedback helps us insure that progress is being made. We look forward to your feedback!

Month of the Military Child

     April is the designated month to recognize the resilience, resoluteness, and relentlessness of “military brats.” Unfortunately, there are numerous amounts of struggle that military children must learn to cope with. These struggles include deployments, separation and frequent moves. “Purple up” is a term used to spread awareness of the month through a single color. We encourage this color to represent the strength and resiliency of military children. Every military child has a unique set of circumstances, however difficult, we can overcome them. That is the power behind the Month of the Military Child.

     In honor of this special month, S2S and JS2S are taking action in recognizing these students. As a parent, you can send your child a message. This is for students at the junior high and high school. These messages can be filled out via the link below. This includes their names, grade, and related information. These messages will be transferred to purple cut-out hearts and given to your children. The link below will need to be filled out by April 9th, messages will be handed to your students on April 12th.

This project is monumental in supporting our military students and school. You can be a part of this important month, and recognize your child’s resilience! Make sure to show your support for Month of the Military Child and send your child a note! (By April 9th)

Stacey Happenings 

Congratulations to Gabe Hilman, Dejon Johnson, and Elijah Farmer for receiving these end of the year awards!!

Junior Gabe Hilman was voted as the District 28-AA Offensive Player of the Year! Senior Dejon Johnson was voted as a District 28-AA 1st Team All District selection and Sophomore Elijah Farmer was voted as a District 28-AA 2nd Team All District selection. Dejon Johnson was also selected as a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All Region player for the state of Texas!

A big THANK YOU to the bowlers at the Skylark Bowling Center, and Skip Merryman for helping raise $310 for next year's Stacey high school bowling team! 6 bowling balls were raffled off to help raise the money. Our bowling team is off to a great start thanks to the support of everyone at Skylark!!!

On Wednesday, March 27th, the Stacey High School UIL Academics Team traveled to Charlotte TX to compete in the District 28-2A Meet. 
 
Our Stacey High School Team won 2nd place overall! We have 15 students who will participate in the Regional UIL Academic Meet on April 12 – 13 in Corpus Christi, plus 4 more students who qualify as alternates!
 
We would like to thank all the High School UIL Academics Coaches who helped prepare our Stacey students to do their best at the competition: Mrs. Baltazar, Mrs. Gray, Mr. Keller, Mrs. Polis, Mrs. Rabidas Mr. Staples, and Mrs. Strahan.  A huge thanks goes out to Mr. Castillo for helping us chaperone!
 
We had 25 Stacey High School students who competed in 18 different events.  Those who placed and participated are listed below:

Are you craving fiesta food but can't make it downtown?  The Stacey Spanish Club is bringing Fiesta to you!  Presale orders will be taken after school on April 17th & 18th at Lackland Elementary and April 15th-18th at Stacey Jr/Sr High.  Food can be picked up after school at 3:45pm on April 22nd-25th in front of the Elementary School office and in the 4600 Building at Stacey.  If you have any questions, please refer to the order form or email Veronica Cervantes at cervantes.v@lacklandisd.net.

Elementary Happenings 

On Purple Up Day, Friday April 12th, our Elementary campus needs your help.

 

We want to surprise our youngest heroes, by lining our hallways and cheering for them as they go to their first classes.

We will be meeting in the Elementary Eyemax, promptly at 7:40a.m. We are asking that you please not arrive earlier or linger in the hallways.  

At 7:45a.m., we will be lining up from the castle (2nd -4th grade hallway) all along the outside sidewalk that leads to the elementary cafeteria.

No visitor badge is necessary, because it is before school begins. Once all of our students pass through, we ask that you please leave promptly using the outside sidewalks.  

Please don't forget to keep it a secret from your kids (s).

April is the Month of the Military Child when we celebrate military children for the courage they display under the pressure of the being the child of a service member. The Commissary is celebrating this month with a Child Coloring Contest! . It is open from April 1 – April 30, 2019.
