Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent.
Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.
The Black History Month 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression."

Stacey Flashback: Charla Gloria By: Adrian Hughes, junior |
|
|
Charla graduated from Stacey in 2020. She was involved in many extracurriculars, including Student Council and Yearbook. She is currently attending college at Georgia Southern University. When and for how long did you attend Lackland ISD/Stacey? 6 years. Moved to Texas from Maryland in the seventh grade and graduated in 2020.
What is your favorite memory you have from attending Stacey?
Uh, the TEEN CENTER of course. Walking to the teen center after school almost every day is a core memory. Playing Smash 4 with old friends, learning photography, art, and playing different sports and being in Lock-Ins was great. But for Stacey itself - I would say that I enjoyed
having the dedicated teachers and playing volleyball there. How do you think going to a small school compares to a larger school?
I say there's pros and cons honestly. A small school like Stacey can be great for learning when the teachers maintain their love for teaching and if the authorities of the school aren't overbearing on the students. Otherwise, it can foster an unhealthy learning environment for
students in a very important and yet volatile stage in life. Large schools don't have to deal with seeing every single student and every single teacher every day and students can make many friends outside of their given track.
Are there any specific challenges you faced due to being a military child? Moving from base to base means the inevitable drift with friends you made along the
way. Every friend that's stuck around since is a lifelong friend. I guess you could call it a blessing in disguise though, because once you graduate you know a thing or two that stationary/non-military kids don't experience. Were you involved in any sports or clubs? I was in almost all the clubs at Stacey to be honest. STUCO, S2S, CyberPatriot, Yearbook, S2S, Band, Choir, Theater, GT, Spanish Club, Church Club, Volleyball, Basketball,
Tennis, and a bunch of other clubs from the teen center. It was overwhelming but I would recommend it for passionate people looking to vent their fire. What are you doing now?
I am a Senior at Georgia Southern University (literally my last semester!!) set to graduate in May 2024, with a bachelor’s in General Health Science. Planning to still be a pilot, or flight attendant - who knows.
What do you do in your free time? Funnily enough, I still play volleyball often. I am much better than I was in 7th grade, and
I'd love to one day play with any of the girls I played with from Stacey. Other than that, I have two adoring cats, love to cook, paint, take care of plants, drive around in my red sports car, and spend time with my friends.
Thank you, Charla! |
