Thank you Leah Sanchez and Cynthia Martinez for supporting our students at Lackland ISD.
Working to assess and improve communication needs and skills, Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with both children and adults whether as part of medical programs or educational systems. These highly trained professionals serve people with hearing loss, voice problems, brain injury, speech sound errors, developmental delays, trouble with chewing or swallowing and much more. National Speech and Language Pathologist Appreciation Day is here to shine a much-deserved spotlight on these people who play such an important role in the lives of so many. And it’s a day to raise public awareness about SLPs and communication health!
History of National Speech and Language Pathologist Appreciation Day
The field of speech-language pathology in the United States dates back more than a century, to the early 1900s when they were originally called “speech correctionists”. The American Academy of Speech Correction was founded in 1925 and the name was changed in 1978 to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
It was 2010 when the first official recognition of this day took place, originally known as “National Speech Pathologist Day”. In the more than a decade since its founding, the day has evolved to include the “language” portion of this aspect of service that includes help for individuals and families, support groups, information for the general public and more. |

Mrs. Duron’s Family and Community Services class was assigned to plan and implement community project. Both Ty’Jeria and Johnna chose to do a “cooking club” with the ALE students taught by Mrs.Thompson and assistants. On two Thursdays, May 9th and May 16th, the ELA class came over to the high school kitchen to cook. The first Thursday they made a fruit parfait with yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, and granola. All students were very engaged and had a good time learning how to make this delicious snack. On May 16th, the students made microwave Mac and cheese. It was something new for all students and everyone had a good experience!

Just Keep Swimming!
Eighth Grader Rules the Pools by Audrey Kost, freshman |

Dana Conner is a Stacey eighth grader and a competitive swimmer here in San Antonio! She plays French horn in the Eagle band and practices Taekwondo in her spare time. Dana’s favorite dish is jajangmyeon and she has an older and a younger brother. This is her first year at Stacey, she came from Otto Middle School in Plano.
What is the name of the swim team you’re a part of? Alamo Area Aquatic Association (AAAA). Where do y’all go for competitions? Usually to nearby natatoriums, but we sometimes go out of state for travel meets. How long have you been swimming? Two and a half years. What swimming events do you participate in?
I am usually put in events such as the 500, 400, 200 100, and 50 freestyle, and the 100 butterfly. What is your favorite event and why? My favorite event is the 100 butterfly because it is my fastest and best stroke. My time in this event qualified me for many championship meets.
Who/what got you into swimming? My mom, she was the one who first got me into swim during the pandemic. I ended up loving the sport. What does an average practice look like?
An average practice consists of 1hr 45 mins practice time and 45 - 1hr dryland time. During practice there is a warm-up usually around 600 yards. Next, we have a kick set which is around 500 yards for leg strength. During the middle of practice we have our main set which is around 1500 yards and focuses on endurance. We then have our drill set which is usually about 400-500 yards which is for skills and techniques. Lastly, we have our cooldown which is usually around 1000 yards. For our drylands, we have leg, arm, or core exercises. Sometimes we may go to the field to run laps or play frisbee.
Is swimming a future career option for you?
Yes, swimming is my #1 career option. My goal is to go to the Olympics and other professional meets such as the NCAA and TYR pro series. Do you have any other hobbies?
Yes, in my free-time I usually go scuba diving with my dad. I also practice Taekwondo whenever I get the chance to do so.
Being a military child, where all have you lived? I have lived in Kentucky; Washington; Seoul, Korea; Daegu, Korea; Plano, Texas; and San Antonio, Texas Thank you Dana! |

On May 7th, Ms. Duron's community service class embarked on a meaningful mission to support our community, volunteering their time at the San Antonio Food Bank. Working together as a team, these 12 students poured their hearts into delivering much-needed food to 84 families. Ruben Ramos, one of the students and organizers of the project, shared his heartfelt thoughts, saying, 'It felt amazing to be out there with my classmates, knowing we were making a real difference. We're just regular people, but together, we did something truly special.

Hello, GT Families!
As we enter the last stretch of the 2023-2024 school year, we're excited for the flurry of "final events" that typically mark this time, from classroom celebrations to award ceremonies, performances, and, of course, graduations. We encourage you to savor these moments and embrace the adventures of summer ahead, while also finding moments to unwind and recharge.
Each child possesses unique strengths, whether in math, language arts, the sciences, music, arts, leadership, athletics, philanthropy, or any other field. Our task is to support them in discovering and nurturing these talents by encouraging exploration of their interests and abilities.
As you embark on your summer break, we encourage you to create opportunities for your students to engage in activities that spark their curiosity and passion. We'll reconnect with you in September through our Back-To-School newsletter! |
