Elementary and Secondary Students Attend Inaugural Superintendent’ Student Advisory Council
Student Representatives from grades 3-12 from Lackland Elementary and Stacey Jr/Sr HS attended the inaugural Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council Meeting on September 30th. Students met in the District Boardroom with Dr. Roper to learn about the purpose of the Council and how they would be able to contribute to different areas to include campus instructional programs, school activities, and school climate.
Students were recommended by their Principal to serve on the Council. While students enjoyed a great pizza lunch, they were asked to reflect and describe through pictures and/or words what the perfect school looked like to them. They also had discussions with the Superintendent about what they liked or disliked about their school. Their answers were encouraging but also leaves room for improvement on both campuses These conversations will serve as a foundation for how we will work to make our schools better for all students. The following students are members of the 2022-2023 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council:
Student Grade
McKinnley Dawn Alexander - Bruton 3rd
Joseph Arturo Sanchez 4th
Jayce Bryon Cross 5th
Harold Jobe (Duke) 6th
Christopher Clark 7th
Jada Creecy 8th
Christian Roshio 9th
Anna Williams 10th
Sanya Willis 11th
Amaya Peterson-Reid (Slater) 12th
Dr. Roper stated: “I am grateful to these amazing students for their participation and honesty. I look forward to working with them and seeing how we can improve their school climate and instructional programs to maximize their achievement while they are a part of Lackland ISD”. |

National Principals Month Celebrated every October, National Principals Month is an opportunity to celebrate and honor our incredible school principals for their visionary leadership and tireless pursuit of success for each student.
Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success. Each October, NASSP, NAESP, and AFSA seek to honor these unsung heroes for their tireless efforts in pursuit of excellence in education.
National Principals Month is a widely recognized celebration of the principalship, marked by national and state resolutions supporting the event, as well as acknowledgements from U.S. Senators and Representatives, and top government officials. However, the most important National Principals Month celebrations are the ones that take place in schools and communities across the country. Lackland ISD would like to say thank you to our amazing principals |

National Custodian Day is commemorated every year on October 2nd. Custodians are the people who keep schools and workplaces clean and running smoothly, and they work very hard to do so, so they certainly deserve a day in their honor. Custodial work can be a tireless and thankless job, leading to custodians often being overlooked and not getting the recognition they deserve.
Custodians might also be known to many as Janitors or Caretakers, particularly in schools. Their role is diverse and they do so much more than just clean, they also perform building maintenance and fix anything that is broken. Without them, buildings would fall in disarray, people wouldn't be able to do their jobs and students wouldn't have a good, safe, and clean learning environment. Custodial work is often looked down on, but they are the oil that keeps the machine running.
To show appreciation for the custodians at work or school, make sure that you are tidy and keep your workplace as clean as possible, to make the custodians' job no harder than it has to be. Let National Custodian Day be a reminder to pay more attention to the little details around, the well-stocked bathroom and organized break room cupboards, and remember someone has done that for you. Lackland ISD would like to say thank you to our amazing custodial team! |

Lackland ISD Adopts New Vision, Mission and Beliefs
The Lackland ISD’s Strategic Planning Committee engaged tirelessly in processes to recommend a new Vision, Mission, and Beliefs to support our work going forward. Dr. Brennan from Educational Service Center Region 13 facilitated the work to ensure input from our stakeholders (teachers, parents, community members, and members of the Board of Trustees). The Lackland ISD Board of Trustees adopted the Vision, Mission, and Beliefs during the September 27, 2022, meeting.
They are as follows: District Vision Lackland ISD ignites a passion for life-long learning and empowers excellence. District Mission
Lackland ISD provides a safe and nurturing environment where we recognize the value of individuals and collaborate to develop their unique abilities. We engage students through innovative experiences to spark creativity and empower students to learn, grow, and excel. Our Beliefs WE BELIEVE
*In providing equitable educational opportunities to meet the unique needs of our students. *In engaging students, staff, families, and the community in a collaborative environment of mutual respect.

Stacey CyberPatriot Teams By: Mia Flores, junior
The 2022-2023 season of CyberPatriot is underway and 12 students are representing Stacey this year. The competition, where students find and fix cyber security vulnerabilities on various virtual operating systems, answer forensic questions and work on a virtual network simulation tool, is in its 15th year. Around 7,000 teams compete from around the world. Volunteers from the community come on campus after school and mentor the students. "The response from the military cyber community has been tremendous", said coach Russell Keller, "the 426th NWS has been especially helpful and we also have mentors from the 854th COS, 33rd COS, 531st IS, 834th COS and the 16th AF. We very much appreciate all of them sharing their time, knowledge and skills with Stacey students."
Two teams have been decided, Team One consists of caption Perry Weller leading Sandra Williams, Britney Thompson, Jason Cox, Cailynn Lanier, and Curtis Roshio. Team Two consists of captain Mia Flores leading Diego Flores, Jaden Deegan, Tristyn Myrick, Cadence Bramlett and Kaya Kaiwi. We are extremely excited to see how far these teams go in the 2022 CyberPatriot season! |

In 1691 some of the first missionaries in East Texas were introduced to a Hasinai woman who could serve as a guide for the Spanish soldiers and settlers. They called her Angelina, or "Little Angel". Angelina accompanied them to Mexico, where she was baptized and learned Spanish. Since Angelina also spoke many Native American languages, she served as a guide and interpreter for several expeditions throughout Texas. She helped the priests spread Christianity. Later, she served as an interpreter for French explorers in East Texas.
Angelina County in East Texas is named for the Little Angel. It is the only county in Texas named after a woman. The Angelina River, which flows for 110 miles through East Texas is also named in her honor. Angelina is a true Texas hero.

What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is a common condition that makes it hard to work with language. Some experts believe that between 5 and 10 percent of people have it. Others say as many as 17 percent of people show signs of reading challenges. People don't outgrow dyslexia, but there are teaching approaches and strategies that can help them improve their reading skills and manage dyslexia challenges. People of any age can be tested for dyslexia, although the tests are different for adults than for kids.
Dyslexia is a learning disability associated with reading. Dyslexic people have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, but these challenges aren’t related to intelligence. Wear Grey/Silver- Tuesdays, October 4th
World Dyslexia Awareness Day was Tuesday, October 4th during Dyslexia Awareness Week. Participants wore grey/silver on Tuesday, October 4th, to show their support for Dyslexia students at Lackland ISD and around the World. |
