Congratulations on Your Retirement! Ms. Cathy Cotnam
by: Mia Flores, sophomore |
|
|
You may or may not already know her but the wonderful lady and teacher above is Ms. Cathy Cotnam, she works at our school as a Special Education case manager and inclusion support teacher. Ms. Cotnam has worked at Stacey for 5 years but as an educator for 21 years, she has taught Biology, AP Biology and IPC. Even though she has many accomplishments in these past 21 years they are coming to a close as she is retiring from education. How long have you been at Stacey? This is my 5th year at Stacey. Is this the only school you have worked at ?
I taught 12 years at Southwest High School, teaching Biology, AP Biology and IPC. I taught 4 years at KIPP teaching Biology, IPC and working as a Case Manager in Special Education. I worked at Pearson Education on producing State Science exams for Georgia, Florida, Minnesota, Tennessee and Abu Dhabi (like our STAAR tests) If so for how long ?
21 years in the classroom as a teacher. 5 years working with Departments of Education in the states mentioned above on science assessments Did you have a different job before working at a school?
I was a preacher’s wife for 13 years. I loved working with pre-school aged children especially children’s choirs. I home-schooled my own children for kindergarten through 4th grade. Teaching my middle daughter to read and write was the most gratifying thing I have ever accomplished as a teacher. What are some hobbies you have ?
I love to sew, making costumes for my children when they were younger and for my grandchildren these days. I have made each grandchild their own sock monkey with a matching outfit. Do you have any kids or pets?
Currently I do not have any pets. I have 3 grown children (1 boy and 2 girls) and I have 2 grandsons and 3 granddaughters...the loves of my life! Favorite color ? Deep teal Favorite TV show or movie ?
I loved the TV show “Fringe”. I enjoy just about any science fiction show that uses believable science in it. I also LOVE PBS and Masterpiece Theatre. THANK YOU Ms. Cotnam! |

Coming Back to Lackland ISD
Mrs. Jihye Dorazio by: Hannah Darity, sophomore |
|
|
Mrs. Jihye Dorazio is a new 4th grade teacher at Lackland Elementary this school year. She is not new to the district, however-she is a Stacey graduate! (class of 2010). Read below to get a sneak peek on her educational journey and why she chose to return to the place she once knew and loved!
When and why did you decide to become a teacher?I’ve always loved working with children even during my high school days. I was in the Ready, Set, Teach program during my high school years which has helped me to appreciate working with children. These experiences led me to wanting to major in Education in college. Why did you decide to come back and teach at Lackland Elementary?
I enjoyed my experiences with other campuses but I always knew that I was going to teach at Lackland someday. Lackland has a special place in my heart because I have so many amazing memories from when I was a student here. I wanted to come back and make this a special place for my students as well.
What would be your ideal grade to teach? I’ve enjoyed all the grade levels that I’ve taught but I definitely have a passion for Elementary Special Education!
What is different about the school since the last time you were here?
Most of my teachers are not here anymore because they’ve retired and the auditorium wasn’t here when I was here. Other than that, almost everything looks exactly the same to me which is awesome. Every time I walk by the middle school and high school side, I feel nostalgic thinking about all the memories that I have. I also love running into some of my favorite teachers/mentors: Ms. Rabidas, Mrs. Duron, and Ms. Nicholson! What’s your favorite subject to teach? My favorite subject to teach is science! I love doing labs, watching students explore and problem-solving. What do you think are the biggest challenges in teaching elementary schoolers? I’d have to say that the biggest challenge is that there’s one of me and lots of them. I love listening to all their stories but we’re always getting chased by time. I have to make sure I manage my time well for my lessons while also giving us time to build
relationships. What is most rewarding to you about teaching elementary schoolers?
It’s rewarding to be involved in this part of their lives. This is a special time in their lives even though they may not realize it right now. I remember being in 4th grade and not knowing how much of that part of my life would shape me. I enjoy learning and growing with them.
If you weren’t a teacher, what other career would you choose? If I weren’t a teacher,I would love to be a singer. For now, I will continue singing in my car driving to and from work. 😄 Thank you Mrs. Dorazio! |

Puffins are any of three species of small alcids (auks) in the bird genus Fratercula. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. The pelagic zone consists of the water column of the open ocean, and can be further divided into regions by depth. The word "pelagic" is derived from Ancient Greek πέλαγος (pélagos) 'open sea'.
Puffins breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic puffin is a short creature. Its face is white with a black stripe running along the bottom of the eye. Their bill is as tall as their face and is triangular in shape when viewed from the side. It is quite narrow across. During breeding season it is colored orange-red near the head and slate grey near the tip with a yellow stripe in between.
All puffin species have predominantly black or black and white plumage, a stocky build, and large beaks that get brightly colored during the breeding season. They shed the colorful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique underwater. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute) in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface.
HOW FAST CAN A PUFFIN FLY?
A puffin can fly 48 to 55 mph (77 to 88 km/hr.). The puffin beats its wings rapidly to achieve this speed reaching up to 400 beats a minute. The wings can move so fast that they become a blur, giving a flying puffin the appearance of a black and white football.
No matter how scientific and complicated the evidence and scientific language gets, we all have to agree that puffins are cute sea creatures! Pam Torre

|
Lackland ISD family, staff, and community,
You all did an outstanding job of encouraging your classes to purchase feathers to dress your turkeys. You raised $2051!!!!!!!! It is a delightful pleasure to share with you the winner of our Turkey contest for the academic year of 2021-2022. With a class contribution of $ 308, Ms. Smallwood is our Turkey Teacher of the year!!!!!! The second place was a close race BUT Ms. Walker took that role with $265.61. Ms. Smallwood’s class will receive a pizza party and Ms. Walker class will get to choose either a popcorn or ice cream party when we return from winter break. I want to thank the Stacey student council for joining us this year in our effort. Thank you all for your support. The student councils appreciate you. |

The students in Mrs. Sewell's SFA class finished the semester by making Sneaky e puppets at their end of semester party. The class has been studying the sounds "bake a cake a," "in a while crocodile I" and "phone home o" all of which have that sneaky e hanging around at the end and making the vowel say its name. The crafty puppets even snuck off from reading class and followed the students home. |

Parenting the Love & Logic Way
This in-person session is held at the ESC-20. Love and Logic is an approach to raising children that provides loving support from parents while at the same time expecting children to be respectful and responsible. Love allows children to grow through their mistakes. Logic allows them to live with the consequences of their choices. Love and Logic is easy to use, raises responsible children, and changes lives. By attending this training, you will learn to use humor, hope, and empathy to build up your adult-child relationship, provide real limits in a loving way, and learn how to teach consequences and healthy decision-making. Session ID# 77119
