By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), Congress designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," and by Public Law 111-13 (April 21, 2009), Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized "National Day of Service and Remembrance."

A Presidential Proclamation each year calls upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Americans are encouraged to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

DoDEA acknowledges -- with profound gratitude and appreciation -- all the brave, selfless heroes that tirelessly defend our freedom and make the great American educational experience possible.

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Lackland ISD strongly desires parent participation in decision-making committees.  You have an opportunity to share your voice and help us actualize our vision as The Premier leader in educational excellence.  As you engage as a parent, we also invite your participation in campus and district-level committees.  Below are the descriptions for these committees for your consideration.  Each committee’s point of contact is listed with the committee description if you have additional questions.

Please read each description and let us know if you are interested in supporting the committee or learning more about it.

School Health Advisory Council

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program.  The council will address the continued implementation of a coordinated health program, including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, a healthy school environment, staff health promotion, and family/community involvement.  This committee must have more parent representation than district staff.  The SHAC meets at least four times during the school year.  Two meetings occur after-school, and two meetings occur during the school day.  Tentative meeting dates are October 5, December 7, February 8, and April 12.

Point of Contact:  Dr. Tonya Hyde, hyde.t@lacklandisd.net

District Education Improvement Council (DEIC)

The District Education Improvement Council (DEIC) is a district-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the District Improvement Plan.  This plan comprises the district’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety.  This committee is also designated to provide recommendations to Texas Education Agency waiver requests and other items of local governance to be addressed by a district-level committee before Board of Trustee approval. Meeting dates are September 26, October 24, February 27, and May 1.

Point of Contact:  Dr. Burnie Roper, roper.b@lacklandisd.net

Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC)

The Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC) is a campus-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the Campus Improvement Plan.  This plan comprises the campus’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety.

District Calendar Committee

The District Calendar Committee assists the district in the development of the school calendar.  Lackland ISD’s District Calendar Committee will develop the calendar for the 2024-2025 school year for board approval. The committee also makes any necessary recommendations for the previously board-approved 2023-2024 school calendar based on new information.  The District Calendar Committee meets after school during the spring semester.  Following the initial meeting to design the calendar, the committee may have additional meetings to consider stakeholder feedback and finalize the calendar for the District Education Improvement Council and the Board of Trustees.

Strategic Planning Committee

Lackland ISD is bringing key community members together to collaborate on creating a five-year strategic plan designed to improve our district.  The strategic planning process is intense. Parent engagement will be requested initially on September 21st or 22nd and September 28 or 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with follow-up meetings on October 11, 18, and/or 27th, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and additional meetings as needed.  The role of committee members is to help set the direction for the district’s plan.

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Lady Crushers CRUSHED!

By: Samuel Crisp, sophomore

In girls High School Volleyball, Knippa faced Stacey on the night of August 30th, 2022.  It was a tough match for our team, Eagles vs Lady Crushers.  Our junior varsity team battled vigorously. They fought hard but lost the first set. They fought even harder allowing them to win the second and had the audience on the edge of their seats during the third set. Unfortunately, after going back and forth during the final set our JV girls were not able to take the victory against the opposing JV Lady Crushers.

It was up to Stacey’s varsity team to bring home the victory that the audience needed. Varsity played amazingly but Knippa also fought hard. They lost the first set but did not take it lightly and came back and won the second set. They repeated the cycle losing the 3rd and winning the 4th leading to the 5th set.  The winner of the 5th set would take the win and the game. The audience was scared and excited.  Our varsity team knew they couldn’t lose and fought hard taking the victory crushing  Knippa in the 5th set winning the whole thing!  Stacey is very proud of our high school's volleyball team.  We wish you luck in the upcoming games!

The Stacey Cross Country team traveled to Dilley High School on Saturday and ran very well. The girls team of Angelina Lione, Mia Flores, Katen Fredin, Lila Colunga, and Addison Gajkowski ran great races and placed 4th, missing 3rd place by two points. Angelina placed 1st with a time of 12:20. The boys ran well, led by Zach Born and Dante Lione, and placed 5th.

On Wednesday, the teams traveled to Harper to run in the Jacob Krebs Cross Country Invitational. On a very tough course, the shorthanded girls team ran really well. Angelina came in 5th to pace the girls. The boys’ team of Zach Born, Dante Lione, Ethan Colunga, Rudy Morales, Jackson Earls, Cameron Dawson, Jonas Woodbury, Levi Woodbury and Diego Flores ran great races and won the overall varsity championship. They ended beating Utopia by one point to clinch the victory. Congratulations to all the runners on a busy and exciting week. They run again in Seguin next Thursday.

 Explorers Visit Texas

In the 1400s, Columbus sailed from Spain.  He was looking for a shorter route to the East Indies.  Spain hoped to gain the riches and treasures of the East Indies.  Columbus and his crew did NOT land in the East Indies.  Instead, they landed in what is now called the West Indies.  People in Europe became excited about the discovery.  They hoped the new lands would make them rich.  Kings and queens wanted to add new territories to the their kingdoms.  Some countries sent explorers to the new lands to look for land and riches.  Some explorers did find gold and other riches in Mexico and parts of South America.

There were many stories of exciting discoveries.  Because of this, Spain and other countries sent more explorers.  The first  explorer to visit Texas arrived by accident.  In 1525, Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked where Galveston is today.  For five years, he and several other lived as slaves to the Karankawa Indians.  Once he helped cure a sick Indian.  The Indians thought he had special powers.  He was treated with respect after that.  He was known as a medicine man, or shaman, and lived a much easier life.  Later, Cabeza de Vaca left the Indians.  He walked across Texas to what is now El Paso.  He then walked ALL the way to Mexico City.  He said all the land he traveled belonged to Spain.  Cabeza de Vaca never saw gold in Texas.  However, he heard stories about "Seven Cities of Gold".  Because of these stories, Spain sent more expeditions, or search teams, to look for the cities.
