Lackland ISD Recognizes National Boss Day

Alternate text

Lackland ISD’s staff and students stand in awe of the outstanding leadership that we experience daily from our Superintendent, Dr. Burnie L. Roper.  Ronald Reagan said, “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things.  He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”   Dr. Roper has been that leader for us.  He encourages and empowers each member of the learning organization to take up the charge to face any challenge.  Undoubtedly, we have faced many challenges in the wake of COVID-19 and social injustice.  However, Dr. Roper continues to demonstrate the action of both servant and leader to help us navigate uncharted territory with continued excellence.   Once a year is not sufficient to express our gratitude, we truly appreciate you every day.  Thank you, Sir, for all you do.

Happy Boss’s Day!

Lackland ISD Recognizes National Principals Month

Alternate text
Alternate text

National Principals Month is recognized annually in October.  It is a widely recognized celebration marked with national and state resolutions to highlight an appreciation for the hard work and dedication involved in the principalship.  As emphasized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), “Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success.”

This quote holds true for the elementary school principal, Mrs. Leija, and secondary principal, Mr. Shelby.  Each is committed to exceeding expectations in the social, emotional, and academic support that are provided to our students.  Mrs. Leija has served as principal of Lackland Elementary School for 11 years and Mr. Shelby has served as principal for 4 years at Stacey Jr./Sr. High School.

We truly appreciate what each principal contributes to Lackland ISD toward the outstanding opportunities that are afforded to our students and staff.  You are continuing to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19 and recognizing the importance of cultural relevance in your daily actions.  National Principals Month and the staff and leadership of Lackland ISD honor you and your efforts.

Let us recognize Yolanda Jackson and Amber Upton for Education Human Resources Day!

Every year, schools nationwide celebrate National School Lunch Week (NSLW) during the month of October.  This year, October 12-16, 2020 was designated as National School Lunch Week (NSLW).  National School Lunch Week recognizes the important role child nutrition professionals have in the education of our students.  Supporting NSLW engages students in learning about proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Despite the pandemic that closed our schools, our LISD Child Nutrition Team continued to provide breakfast and lunch meals throughout the 2019-2020 school closure and summer break.  Despite the many new challenges COVID-19 created, our Child Nutrition Team did not miss a beat. The team celebrated National School Lunch Week by decorating our cafeterias, preparing special displays, and passing out buttons and stickers that promote healthy eating.  Please join us in giving out a big THANK YOU to our wonderful and hard-working Child Nutrition Team.

Halloween Costumes for Preemies

Written by:  Hannah McFerrin

Covid has created a surplus of challenges in creative and traditionally hands-on classes. Ms. Duron’s Family and Community Service Class has been able to overcome obstacles even with most students working from home. The class, along with the help of some of Ms. Duron’s other classes and clubs were able to hand-make nearly thirty simple costumes for premature babies to wear this year. Threads of love will collect the costumes. This is a charity organization based in San Antonio and led by Liz Page.  Their focus is on providing clothing, hats, blankets, and other handmade articles for tiny premature and sick infants. The goal of this project is to hopefully create happy memories for the families spending Halloween in the hospital with preemies. This effort gives positivity, love, and support to babies and their parents who are going through a worrying and scary time.

Fall is here and so are the monarch butterflies!  Right now, the monarchs are really tiny and they swoop, dive, and fly through the air.  When they land, it is just long enough to grab a quick sip of water and maybe snack on a  very tasty grub,  or....if the little butterflies are in the right place at the right time, they will find a sip of nectar from one of the local plants.  One of the favorite plants is milkweed.

We are fortunate to live in the flight path of the monarch butterflies as they head south to Mexico.  We get to see the monarchs in flight, not just one or two at a time, but hundreds passing by.  Enjoy this moment in time...it is amazing!

Mrs. Duron’s Family and Community service class is organizing a letter collection for our elders in nursing home residents.  Join us to help fight the loneliness of our seniors and let them know they are supported.  We are needing LISD students to write handwritten letters that will be given to the residents of Blue Skies East.   Letters will be proofread as well as to make sure to keep it school appropriate.  Be creative and add a little personal touch.  Drop off your letter(s) in Mrs. Duron’s room (3800) or at the Jr/Sr High office. For elementary students, the drop off will be at the elementary office.  Letters need to be completed and turned in by October 22, 2020.
