SCHOOL BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY

Each year School Bus Driver Appreciation Day falls on the fourth Tuesday in April, which is April 23 in 2024. Today, we are recognizing all school bus drivers for taking care of our precious cargo during the school year. Whether they are transporting our kids to school, home, activities, or to sporting events, school bus drivers deserve recognition for the job they do.

#THANKYOUBUSDRIVERS

School bus drivers play an important role in the education of our children. Bus drivers are the person who ensures their safety each time they step on the bus. On School Bus Driver Appreciation Day we send our appreciation and support for bus drivers everywhere and thank them for taking care of our children.

On April 23, we celebrated National Administrative Professionals Day! This holiday is always celebrated on the Wednesday of the last full week of April. Although it’s not observed as a public holiday this day is still important and there’s so much to celebrate. This holiday even got its own episode on “The Office.”

During World War ll there was a shortage of people with the skills of an administrative professional. This was due to the birth-rate decline from the Depression era and booming post-war business. In 1942, the National Secretaries Association was formed in order to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel to the economy, support their development, and attract workers to the field. During their first year as an association, they created National Administrative Professionals Day. Key figures in the day’s creation include the association’s president — Mary Barrett, the president of Dictaphone Corporation — C. King Woodbridge, and the public relations account executives at Young & Rubicam — Harry F. Klemfuss and Daren Ball.

The designated moment of celebration was first dictated by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Charles W. Sawyer, as National Secretaries Week, held from June 1 through June 7. In 1955, Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April, with Wednesday marked as Administrative Professionals Day. In 1981, the name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week but, in the year 2000, it became Administrative Professionals Week in order to include the wide range of responsibilities and job titles of administrative staff in the modern economy. The day has undergone many name changes but the initial goal to celebrate and recognize all the hard work administrative professionals do has remained.

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.

Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.

Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

UIL Region IV Track & Field Meet

On April 18th & 19th , students from Stacey Jr/Sr High School competed in the UIL Region IV Track & Field Championships at Texas A&M Kingsville. Zach Born ran to a 1st place finish in a very windy 3200m with a time of 10:21.63 on Friday. The 4x200M Relay team of Bryan Shaw, Brandon Shaw, Jordan Ridgill-Villanueva, and Jewell Hicks finished 6th in their heat. They unfortunately did not advance to finals, but they did have a very successful season in which they were District Champs and set the school record. Brandon Shaw then ran the 200M and finished 6th in his heat as well. While he did not advance to the finals, he is looking forward to next year and being back. Zach came back on Saturday to run the 1600M and again captured 1st place with a time of 4:38.20. Zach will run the 3200M and the 1600M at the UIL State Track & Field meet on May 2nd.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and good luck to Zach at State!!

The Stacey varsity girls golf team competed in the UIL Regional golf tournament on April 16th and 17th in Corpus Christi, TX. 4 of the 5 golfers had their best round at the tournament and with all 5 golfers coming back next year, it will be a good experience to build on to try and advance to state.

On April 21st, the Stacey Tennis team traveled to Sabinal to compete in the District Tennis Tournament. I’m so proud of how everyone competed.  In the JV Girls, Ashlee Davee placed 1st. In JV Mixed Doubles, Gabrielle Sheehan and James Weller placed 2nd.  In Varsity Mixed Doubles Miguel Garza and Eliana Flores placed 4th. Big Congrats to my Varsity Girls Doubles Paige Archibald and Sophia Mendez-Gonzalez for placing 2nd and making it to Regionals! Congratulations to everyone who competed hard and gave their best. The 1st and 2nd places on Varsity will advance to the UIL Region IV Tennis Tournament which will be held on May 9th - 10th at the H-E-B Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.  Good luck to Sophia and Paige.

Viva Fiesta!!

Both King Antonio and El Rey Feo along with their entourages including queens, princes, cavaliers, and members of our military visited Lackland Elementary kicking off the start of Fiesta!! Students donning their own jeweled crowns cheered as many were recognized! One of the most notable honorees was 4th grader Ashley Livingaton for being the best (1st place) in the non city council region and one of eleven finalists citywide for the Texas Cavalier Poster Contest! She was awarded a giant check for $5000 for her school's art program. She also recieved a Summer camp scholarship and more. Dr. Greeness, Mrs. Walderman, retirees and several other students were also called on stage and acknowledged! It was a super fun event!

Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Martino took students out to write a creative piece from the point of a view of an animal they have seen around Lackland. Enjoying the nice weather and a little vitamin D ☀️

Kinder Corner

Gifted & Talented Corner

We hope that you had a relaxing and enjoyable spring break. As we move into April, we're getting closer to summer break and exciting vacations. However, before we reach that point, April brings several important events for our GT students.

Seventh and eighth grade GT students will be attending the annual Gifted Student Conference at Region 20.  The LES Robotics Club will be hosting their first intermural competition on April 30th.
There’s so much to look forward to — we hope you’ll join us!

Multiple Perspectives

One key way we aim to foster critical thinking in our students is by encouraging them to consider multiple perspectives.

Multiple Perspectives asks students to consider how another person would think about a topic. By encouraging children to view issues or topics from different angles, we help them develop a well-rounded understanding of the world around them.

Sentence Starters for Multiple Perspectives:

How might a professional in the field view ____ differently from the average person?

What opposing opinions have been voiced about ____?
