LISD E-Newsletter April 17, 2020 Lackland ISD Closed for the Remainder of the School Year!
By order of Texas Governor Greg Abbot, all Texas schools have been ordered closed for the remainder of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to provide high-quality online instruction via online resources, and we will continue to provide both breakfast and lunch meals through the last day of school for students which is Friday, May 22, 2020. We are working with our principals to ensure the academic needs of our students are met to the best of our ability. We are considering the possibilities for end of year activities to include our senior graduation. We will send more information once those decisions have been made. Please continue to be safe and take care of yourselves.
Respectfully, Burnie L. Roper Dr. Burnie L. Roper Superintendent Table of Contents:

Admin Alley Each year, April is set aside as a military child appreciation month, officially known as the Month of the Military Child. With its start in the mid-1980s, the Pentagon and other military support organizations and agencies use the month to recognize military kids for their sacrifice and bravery on the home front.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Lackland ISD teachers and staff have successfully pivoted to using digital platforms for distance learning. We truly appreciate the efforts of educators in our district and throughout the state of Texas. Please join us in appreciation of their work.
Parents continue to be essential partners in our work to support the academic and social programs of our students. Parent perusals are provided to share strategies and resources to sustain our work together. Around the District LISD parents, the weekly resources are here! This week we have a new set of tools to help balance screen time with your kiddos, family exercise, scholarship opportunities, frequent worry, and all the digital resources coming your way. Our LISD Military Student Transition Consultant is sharing a weekly newsletter to keep families up to date and better equipped with relevant tools during this time we are social distancing. Pay special attention to the FREE Military Child Appreciation Kit from Military OneSource.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Stacey! Virginia Allred Stacey, April 15, 1927 - Jan 12, 2000. Mrs. Stacey was a former teacher, principal and superintendent at Lackland ISD. She worked tirelessly to promote the education of military students on Lackland. She traveled to Washington DC to educate political leaders about the importance of impact aid to our students. Many would describe her as this school’s strength, foundation, protector and hero, who always fought for what was right. She is missed greatly and will always be remembered for her wisdom and bold personality. —Kaitlyn M. Maldonado, Class of 2019 {originally published in ‘The Aerie’, May 2019}

The Child Development class is busy learning about the development of a pre-school child. This week they read an online article about the importance of dramatic play. What is dramatic play? It is a type of play where children accept and assign roles, and then act them out. It is a time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situations and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. Students had to create a dramatic play area or activity at their house with supplies on hand. Here are a few of the amazing creations that were turned in.
Mrs. Torre's 7th Grade Texas History students recently finished reading about World War I and the Roaring Twenties. Students were amazed to learn about the new inventions of the day, such as vacuum cleaners! Up until this time, a broom was the technological miracle that kept floors clean. Sewing machines were in use, the electric iron was a novelty.
World War I saw a rise of patriotism and an unifying spirit across the country. Bessie Coleman grew up in a large family in Waxahacie, Texas. At the age of 28, she went to France to pursue her dream to fly. She had to travel abroad because no American flight school would teach an African American woman. In 1921 she became the first person of African descent to earn a pilot's license. This is our history. Our story is unique and no one tells our story better than we do!

The yearbook staff finished ‘The Aerie, Vol XXXIX’ on March 29th. Editor Sara Kinney (12) and her staff faced the enormous challenge of completing pages, finding pictures and editing pages from home without having the benefit of being on campus. Everyone had a hand in finishing the book; from teachers helping identify students for captions to coaches sending out requests to the track & golf teams for individual pictures. Special thanks to the Hassett, Scott, Ludwigsen and Murray families for their contributions.

Dogs become our classmates and our co-workers as we learn and teach from home! Many kids take a great brain break outside! Trampolines seem to be a class favorite for us! April 3rd was Ms. Ingram's birthday, and distance learning did not keep the students from creating beautiful digital birthday cards! Best birthday ever!
