Lackland ISD Says Goodbye to Mrs.  Rebecca Estrada

For the past 19 years, Mrs. Rebecca Estrada has managed the financial operations of the Lackland Independent School District. Her amazing career in public schools officially came to an end on August 31, 2021. During her extensive career in public education, Becky has established herself as the “go to” person for everything dealing with school finance. Lackland ISD was blessed to have one of (if not the best) CFOs in the state of Texas. She has been a mentor to many people and has freely shared her knowledge and experience with anyone who was willing to listen and learn from her vast knowledge and experience in school finance. Due to her keen knowledge and hard work, Lackland ISD consistently received the highest financial  ratings from the Texas Education Agency. Becky has left Lackland with a solid financial foundation and has taught all of us something.  We are grateful that we had the opportunity to work and learn from her.  Becky has already begun a full-time position with the Texas Association of School Business Officials(TASBO).  She will continue her work with small school districts such as ours, so we are hopeful that our paths will cross again soon!

Becky was presented with a plaque from the LISD School Board and district administration that expressed the following:

In appreciation for your 19 years of service to Lackland ISD as the  Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Through your extraordinary knowledge and skills in school business, you have led the Lackland ISD Business Office in efficiently managing the business affairs of the district which led to consistent outstanding financial ratings from the Texas Education Agency. You developed and fortified a solid foundation of financial practices and policies that will help our district continue its path of financial excellence. You have been a mentor, teacher, friend, and trusted colleague. Your dedication, loyalty, and professionalism will always be remembered and cherished. You will always have a special place in our hearts, and we wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors.

We will miss Mrs. Estrada dearly but wish her all the best.

Labor Day

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Lackland ISD strongly desires parent participation in decision-making committees. You have an opportunity to share your voice and
help us actualize our vision as The Premier leader in educational excellence. As you engage as a parent, we also invite your
participation in campus and district-level committees. Below are the descriptions for these committees for your consideration. Each
committee’s point of contact is listed with the committee description if you have additional questions.
Please read each description and let us know if you are interested in supporting the committee or learning more about it.

FREE LUNCH & BREAKFAST

FOR ALL LISD STUDENTS DURING THE 2021-2022 SY

LISD students will receive free lunch and breakfast meals during the 2021- 2022 school year with special funding authorized by the United States Department of Agriculture.  For meals to be free for students, they must be compliant with USDA regulations.  Second meals and a la carte items are available for purchase.

Research shows students learn better when they are well nourished.  Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, more alertness, faster information processing, and improved health leading to better school attendance.

We encourage our students to join us for well-balanced, free meals in one of our cafeterias every school day. Menus are available online at: https://www.lacklandisd.net/departments/operations/child-nutrition-services.

Meet Coach Bonnett!

By: Sophia Mendez, freshman

Amber Bonnett is the new Stacey PE teacher and coach (basketball and track). She is a graduate of East Central HS (where she placed 2nd in the state in the discus!) and Texas State University. Ms Bonnett is also a certified history and special ed teacher.

What made you become a P.E teacher?

I became a teacher and coach because I love to encourage and empower others, and I had a lot of amazing teachers and coaches that I looked up to when I was in school, especially my dad!!

What made you come to Lackland?

I wanted to move back to TX to be closer to family and friends, and Lackland ISD is a great place to work with students from all over the world.

Do you have any pets?

If so, what is your pet's name? No pets, but I love animals.

Was being a teacher your first career choice?

YES!! Teaching and coaching is the best career for me and I love it!! I also wanted to be an Olympic athlete and professional photographer.

Do you like the school so far?

I love working here at Stacey High School; the staff and students are very respectful, kind, and a lot of fun to work with!!

If you weren't a teacher what would you be?

If I weren’t a teacher, I would like to travel the world and take pictures for National Geographic.

How was your old school?

My previous school had amazing students and some awesome colleagues.  The buildings were really old and had a lot of issues, but they are getting a new school built next year.

What goals do you have for your first year at Stacey?

My goals are to continue to encourage and empower students, to be a positive asset for Lackland, and to learn how to get around base more efficiently.

If you could go anywhere, where would it be?

I really want to visit Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada.

Thank you Ms. Bonnett!

Get to Know our New Classmate

By Shannah Flores, senior

For those of you who don’t know, Fanny Johansson is a foreign exchange student from Sweden in her junior year here at Stacey. I took the time to interview Fanny about her experience traversing the States as well as some aspects of her personal life.

Do you have any favorite Swedish cartoons that you watched as a little kid?

So, most of the cartoons I thought were Swedish when I was younger turned out to be American, British, French etc. and were just dubbed. But one that actually is Swedish is called Bamse. It’s about this bear that fights bad guys with his superhuman strength he gets from eating a magical honey. It’s more for younger kids, but I used to really like it.

How has the exchange program differed from your expectations?

When I applied to the program, I thought I’d be placed in a big high school with thousands of students and big football games, which didn’t exactly happen. I also thought it would be like the movies. In some ways it is, like how the school looks and how the classes are, but looking back I can see how that’s a bit unrealistic.

Do you have any pets? Or any siblings?

So, at home in Sweden I didn’t have any pets, but I do have a brother. He’s nineteen and just graduated from high school (we start school a year later in Sweden). He’s really cool, I like my brother a lot. Here in the US, my host family has a dog and a cat and I also have three sisters. It’s a full house compared to what I’m used to.

What’s one of your favorite things about America?

My favorite thing about America is probably the fact that you have so many different fast food places and shops. I love food and shopping so it’s fun to see a big variety.

What’s one thing you miss about Sweden?

I definitely have to say my friends and family. Even though I’m making friends here, I’ll probably always miss my friends from back home.

What is a major difference you noticed in America from Sweden?

Everything is a lot bigger here. For example, a small soda at McDonalds here is like a large one in Sweden. It’s nice since I can get a lot more food if I’m hungry, but I feel like I easily overeat and feel a bit sick afterwards.

What’s your favorite pastime?

My favorite pastime is probably just hanging out with friends, like walking around town and doing stuff. But I also used to do figure skating back home so that was a big part of my pastime too. I really miss going to practice, but luckily San Antonio has an ice rink!

What’s one thing you would like to do during your time in America?

There’s so much I’d like to do, it’s hard to decide. If I have to choose one thing it’s probably to go to prom. I’ve always wanted to go to a dance, but I never got the chance because of COVID, so I hope I’ll be able to go this year. Also, prom seems like a much bigger deal than the dances we have in Sweden and I want to experience that.

What’s one difference in schooling in America compared to Sweden?

So there are, of course,  a lot of differences but the biggest difference is probably the schedule and how the classes work. In Sweden, all the lessons aren’t the same length and we don’t have all classes everyday. They basically devote more time to certain classes that are more important (math, Swedish, English). We also have class with the same people all the time because we don’t have that many electives. A fun fact: I’ve never called a teacher by their last name before, everyone is on a first name basis in Sweden.

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me, Fanny! It was an absolute pleasure getting to know you!

September has several United States and international holidays.

Labor Day is the most well known holiday in September. It is observed every year on the first Monday in September.

Native American Day is always celebrated on the 4th Friday of September.

Grandparent's Day is observed in the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Constitution Day, celebrating the ratification of the governing document of the United States, is observed on the 17th.

The autumn equinox, which is the traditional transition from summer into fall, takes place on or around September 22nd, depending on the year.

Elementary Happenings

Mrs. Silvin’s class has been busily working with the new curriculum. They discussed skin care and why sunscreen is important to block UV rays. In one experiment they used color changing beads to see if using sunscreen would have an effect.

SPF 50 had very little effect but SPF 100 blocked almost ALL the UV rays…as seen here!

The class has been learning about sharing and making new friends.

The children are starting to connect that we can write what we say and that sentences have directionality.

Science time in Mrs. Crawford’s class!!!! Students practiced their measurement skills with a Lockbox Challenge. Were they able to crack the code?!?!
