May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success.

Stories from the Veterans History Project: Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander American Veterans

Today there are more than 300,000 living Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander American veterans. The Library of Congress' Veteran's History Project honors those veterans who have shared their stories, veterans such as Kurt Chew-Een Lee, Jaden Kim, Kenje Ogata, Maginia Sajise Morales, Peter Young and Veasna Rouen. The digital collection Asian Pacific Americans: Going for Broke highlights additional stories from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. (Library of Congress)

Stacey Happenings

The Class of 2021 had a senior trip to Six Flags Fiesta this past April 17th and a Senior Luncheon catered by Maggiano’s on April 30th where they celebrated the seniors’ “Next Steps”.

Robotics FTC City Championship

62 FTC Robotics teams in the San Antonio Metro area began the season this year. 15 of those made it to the Championship held last Saturday, May 1st.

Both of Stacey’s Robotics teams qualified for the Championship. The Bots in Blue team performed well and finished the Championship in 10th place overall but, unfortunately, did not advance to the next round.

Stacey’s all-female Team Marvel✯✯us also made it to the Championship and placed 7th overall and was selected to be one of the 4 alliance captains and competed in the semi-finals.

They also earned 3rd place recognition in the Motivate Award and earned 1st place in the Connect Award. Their performance was so superb that they are one of 37 teams (out of 193 total) to be invited to the Central Texas Regional Championship to be held on May 22nd.

Congratulations on all their hard work and success. (Cadence Bramlett 7th grade, Anna Williams 8th grade, Sandra Williams 10th grade, and their robot Lil’ Buddy)

Senior Spotlight: Ariana Flores

by: Hannah Darity, freshman

Ariana Flores is a senior here at Stacey Jr/Sr High School. She started her journey 4 years ago as a freshman. She has decided to further her education at Northwest Vista community college to complete her prerequisites before she goes to a university of her choice. Below are some of the questions that I asked her.

1.What are you most looking forward to after graduation?

Starting college and not having to wake up at 6 am everyday.

2.What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

I hope to see myself already graduated from college and starting my career as an environmental engineer.

3.What was your favorite high school memory?

Probably all the sports seasons I’ve played. The memories during the games are always thrilling and post game is a blast, hanging out with friends and going to eat or just chilling.

4.What advice would you give a new freshman?

Don’t always feel like you have to over-exceed. Take the path you want and never let someone tell you what to do. Just be you!

5.Who is/was your favorite teacher?

Every one of the teachers I’ve had in high school were the best and always super helpful, but Ms. Polis always felt like a second mom for me and was always there to talk and help me academically.

6.Do you think that your high school experience has prepared you for college and/or life?

I’d say somewhat it has. Only in ways for me being on my own such as making friends and being social, but still has not helped me on things such as how to pay bills.

7.If you could change one thing about this school what would it be?

I would definitely change the school spirit. The kids here always complain about the school spirit when it's the student body that creates it. The more spirit the more fun and social the school would be.

8.What will you miss most about Stacey?

There's so many things I’ll miss here at the school. I’ve created so many memories during sports seasons, in the classroom, and with the people here. I think I can look back at my years at Stacey and say that it was overall a good high school experience.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers nationwide! To celebrate and serve the community, a few of Mrs. Duron’s classes made heart warming Mug Rugs to give to the Battered Women’s Shelter. Originally her students made 35, but after consulting with the shelter they needed to make 65 Mug Rugs. With the help of Stacey students, teachers, coaches, Mrs. Pena and even parents, we were able to reach our goal. What is a Mug rug? It’s a combination of a coaster and a placemat that can make someone’s morning special while drinking a hot cup of coffee or tea. All the mug rugs were embroidered by hand and sewn from the heart. Students put the crafted item in a mug with a cookie and a tea bag to finish off the Mother’s Day Goodies.

Next week is fiesta week Stacey Junior / Senior High! S2S, Spanish Club and Student Council are teaming up to make this week spectacular. One of the events is Thursday, May 13th.  S2S will be hosting a Game Day Fiesta at the picnic tables after school. We’ll be playing all different types of games, with snacks and fun.  You can bring your favorite school appropriate card or board game or use the ones provided.   Bring a friend, family member, just come solo - but make sure to sign up through the google form.  May 13th, save the date! You don’t want to miss the fun.

******************************************

Throughout history, people have been fascinated by the mystery of what lies beyond our planet.  Limited to watching and calculating from Earth, we have been unable, until the second half of the 20th century, to explore the vast unknown expanse of space.

Born in 1473, the Polish explorer, Copernicus, was the first person to explain that the planets move around the sun.  Glalileo, an Italian born in 1564, invented a telescope used to discover Jupiter's satellites and the craters of the moon.

As telescopes became more sophisticated, astronomers discovered more about different planets and solar systems.  Pluto, at the furthest edge of our solar system, was named in 1930.  Astronomers saw huge dying stars, called supernovas, which shone very brightly, then disappeared.  However, telescopes showed astronomers only a limited amount.  To learn more about space, they need to travel in space.  A German scientist, Wernher von Braun, designed the first working rocket, the V-2, which was used by the Germans in World War II. After the war, von Braun helped the Americans build space rockets.  The first American rockets reached a height of 70 miles.

By the early 1960s, it was a race between the United States and the Soviet Union to put the first person on the moon.  The Americans were first in 1969.  All over the world, millions watched on television as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out of the Apollo 11 space capsule onto the moon's surface.  Neil Armstrong called it "one small step for man, a giant leap for mankind."  On subsequent trips, astronauts have brought back rock samples.  Scientists studying them have learned much about the moon's age and make-up.

Dear Parents and Guardians of current Sixth Graders,

In order to comply with Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements, all students entering Seventh Grade are required to have the following immunizations:

1 dose of Tetanus, Diptheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) if at least 5 years have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.

1 dose of Quadrivalent Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV4 or MenACWY) on or after 10th birthday

Often, a child has received immunizations and we do not have a copy of their most updated immunization record.  The record on file for your child does not indicate the two vaccines above.

If your child has an updated immunization record, you may submit it directly to the e-mails listed below.

If your child will be attending Lackland ISD during the 2021 - 2022 school year, you may have them vaccinated at your earliest convenience now,  and bring or send proof before the end of this school year so we can update our records.

Students without proper documentation or a valid exemption will not be allowed in class on the first day of school August 16, 2021 until we receive updated immunizations.

If you have any questions, please call us at (210) 357-5040.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Silvin’s class is studying “Changes”

They are learning about changes around them that are beyond their control—seasons, weather, and earth changes. They will examine the power they have to cause change as well as examining the responsibility they have to monitor change in their environment.

Can you imagine San Antonio an ocean? They looked at fossils from the Cretaceous Period! These fossils were found here in San Antonio by Mrs. Silvin. Most of the fossils are an Exogyra. They lived during the Cretaceous Period, primarily the Upper Cretaceous so the age is ~66-100 million years ago. This was of course during the time of the dinosaurs, but most of Texas was covered by water at that time (a much larger Gulf of Mexico and a seaway that extended north to Canada) so we had marine creatures, such as these oysters, as well as ammonites, other shells, echinoids, sharks teeth, and lots of other fossils.  These are often called a ”Devils toenail”.

Our students learned how to be careful cleaning and moving the fossils. They examined the fossils up close and compared them to shells from creatures living today.

On Friday, at the conclusion of the fossil discussion, the entire class took home a fossil. Their very own connection to the dinosaurs and Texas millions of years ago.

Aloha
