Lackland ISD Recognizes Counselor Appreciation Week

This week is set aside for the national recognition of counselors. At the heart of Lackland ISD’s system of social-emotional support are our four counselors. Lackland Elementary School counselors are Mr. Flores (PK-2) and Ms. Dominguez (3rd-5th). Ms. Nicholson serves as the counselor for middle school students and Mrs. Medellin-Keller is the counselor for our high school students.

Beyond the classroom teacher, this team provides the foundation for social-emotional support for our students.  Lackland ISD is also fortunate to have the additional support of our Social-Emotional Support Coordinator and Interventionist, Mrs. Castillo, Our social-emotional support assistant, Ms. Santoyo, and four Military Family Life Counselors.  We appreciate the coordinated efforts of this team to ensure that student needs are met academically and along the social-emotional continuum. Thank you for being at the heart of the outstanding services we provide to our military-connected students.

Lackland ISD Shares Survey Results

Thank you for taking advantage of the opportunity to share your voice as members of the Lackland ISD learning organization by participating in the Fall 2019 survey opportunities.  The links below will give you access to reports.  These reports will share results and comparison data for survey results from Spring 2017 – Fall 2019.

Lackland ISD students in third through twelfth grade have the opportunity to participate in two surveys.  One survey solicits feedback related to campus climate and culture.  This survey measures school belonging, school climate, school engagement, school safety, and school teacher-student

relationships.  The other survey is related to student social and emotional learning competencies.  This survey is comprised of questions related to the student’s self-assessment of classroom effort, grit, growth mindset, and self-efficacy.  You are encouraged to review the results of student surveys and engage with your child’s teachers and campus personnel to support us in

improvement efforts.

3rd - 5th                      Student Survey Spring 17' - Fall 19'

6th – 12th                    Student Survey Spring 17' - Fall 19'

In addition to the survey opportunities, students were asked to provide specific feedback regarding two things our schools do well and two things we could do to improve.  Accolades shared were related to peer to peer support, open gym, and lunch. While communication is still an area of growth students have benefited from the addition of a designated Social-Emotional Support coordinator. The campus and district also addressed student concerns by rallying for and adding another Military Family Life Counselor.  With the addition of these two positions, students are enjoying group discussions where they are able to provide and receive valuable feedback. The work is not yet complete therefore the district and campus teams are currently reviewing data and refining plans to inform learning organization priorities towards continuous improvement.  Our goal is to provide periodic updates regarding actions taken.

We share this information with you to enlist your continued engagement with the survey and our efforts towards continuous improvement.  Please check back next week to see the results of the family surveys.  We aim to invest more time and effort in areas that will positively impact our ability to fulfill our vision, mission, and beliefs as your school district.

In addition to the survey opportunities, teachers and staff were asked to provide specific feedback regarding two things our schools do well and two things we could do to improve.  Accolades shared were related to autonomy in the classroom and social opportunities for staff. Consistent communication is the area where growth is a welcomed opportunity.   While communication is happening, district and campus teams will begin conversations to determine the mechanism(s) that would support improved communication for all.  Our goal is to provide periodic updates regarding actions taken towards continuous improvement.

We share this information with you to enlist your continued engagement with the survey and our efforts towards excellence.  Please check back in subsequent weeks to see additional results.  We aim to invest more time and effort in areas that will positively impact our ability to fulfill our vision, mission, and beliefs as your school district.

8th grade & HS

University of Houston Victoria

On Monday, February 3, 2020, our 8th grade and high school AVID students visited the University of Houston Victoria.  The students toured the quaint campus, visited small and auditorium sized classes, examined the dorm and student cafeteria.  The students witnessed some of the work done in the robotics lab and the newly built library with maker spaces! The school offers some great support for students from freshman year to graduation and beyond.  They even have a market that allows student to get 10 food items and 2 non-food items each week at no cost.  More importantly UHV offer a plethora of opportunities for students to make their mark!

⚠ATTENTION⚠

Teen Dating Violence Month

The month of February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM)

What is TDVAM?

Every February across the United States, teens and supporters join together in this national effort to raise awareness for teen dating violence. Dating violence is very common and needs as much support and recognition as possible. This is an issue that impacts everyone – not just teens – but their parents, teachers, friends and communities as well. Together, we can raise the nation's awareness about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships.

What is our school doing to participate?

The Principles of Human Services class are doing projects for TDVAM to raise awareness around campus. Some of the projects can be seen and heard throughout the school with posters, the newsletter, Kahoots in the Lyon center, and booths during lunch.

We are also going to be wearing orange on Tuesday, Feb. 11th.

Join us in our effort to raise awareness and wear orange!

How do I participate?

SPREAD THE WORD! Inform those around you about TDVAM. Talk, text, or tweet to your friends, family, and kids about the month and the impacts it has. There’s activities you can take part in too like the That’s not cool Program or the Teendvmonth Toolkit. You can find lots of information and details about TDVAM at Loveisrespect.com

Stacey Happenings

An Out of This World Homecoming

By: Sara Kinney, senior

After a school spirit filled week and well-fought games of basketball, Saturday brought on a space- themed night of fun. The Stacey High School Student Council worked all Friday to make the cafeteria mirror the night sky as stars, clouds, and planets hung from the ceiling. Students flooded the cafeteria for a night of dancing and excitement with friends. As the night grew to a close, eight students were crowned the royalty of the night. Freshman Prince Joel Mansapit and Princess Hayley Sablan came first but were quickly followed by Sophomore Prince Daniel Stone and Princess Maria Orencia. Junior Prince Elijah Farmer and Princess Symphony Nieves went next and lastly, the Senior King Jacob Gamboa and Queen Isabella Evans were crowned, ending the night of celebration.

Meet Mrs. Torre!

By: Kamryn Thompson, sophomore

Image

Mrs. Pam Torre teaches social studies-6th & 7th grade at Stacey. She is a military veteran and recently won the KENS 5 Credit Human EXCEL Award!

1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be?

I always wanted to be a teacher. I would line up my stuffed toys and teach them

how to count and read.

2. When and where do you plan to retire?

Retirement is still a few years off. San Antonio is home for our family.

3. What was your favorite subject in school?

Social Studies !!!! I love history!!

4. What is your ideal student?

My ideal student reads and asks questions about how the past affects our present and our future.

5. What do you hope to achieve by the end of your teaching career?

I would like to be remembered as “that teacher” that helped to inspire the next

generation of history heroes and storytellers. This is our story and we need to hold on to that legacy.

6. What has been your favorite vacation?

Camping with my husband, Greg, and our dogs.

7. Do you speak more than one language, if so how many?

Yes. I speak Spanish and I can navigate my way through French.

8. What has been your favorite grade to teach?

I enjoyed my time as a 3rd grade teacher because everything learned was a

joyous discovery. I like teaching Middle School Social Studies because it is challenging and it is OUR STORY to take forward to the next generation.

9. Has the school changed at all from when you first started teaching here to now?

YES!!! The technology we use is amazing! With all things, though, we need to be

mindful of moderation. There is nothing better than turning the pages in a book and having a conversation with someone close by. I think some of us are so immersed with our technology applications that we have forgotten the human element, the emotion and the passion.

*****THANK You Mrs. Torre!*****
