Lackland ISD Calls on Congress to Support Our Schools

District Leaders Advocate for Impact Aid

Representatives from Lackland ISD recently went to Washington, D.C. to call congress’ attention to the needs of area schools at the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS) Spring Conference.

Board Secretary Dr. Laura Munro, Trustee Chris Dietert, and Superintendent Dr. Burnie Roper joined school district leaders from across the United States to discuss and advocate for Impact Aid, an essential program that provides critical funding to federally impacted school districts like Lackland ISD. Impact Aid reimburses these school districts for the loss of revenue caused by the presence of nontaxable federal property such as Lackland AFB. It helps ensure students who attend schools on or near such property have access to a quality education.

As part of the conference, Dr. Munro, Mr. Dietert, and Dr. Roper met with staff for Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Congressman Joaquin Castro, Congressman Lloyd Doggett, Congressman Will Hurd, and Congressman Chip Roy to request that Congress increase funding for Impact Aid for Fiscal Year 2020 and dedicate significant funds to address infrastructure needs of federally impacted school districts. They explained the crucial role of Impact Aid in Lackland ISD and shared achievements and needs of schools and students.

“Without Impact Aid, we wouldn’t be able to effectively serve our students,” said Dr. Burnie Roper, Superintendent of Lackland ISD. “Impact Aid funds are used for teacher and staff salaries, student transportation, and technology purchases just to name a few. This funding is critical to providing our students the opportunities they need to maximize their potential, so it is important for us to travel to Washington and advocate directly to Congress for it.”

During the three-day conference, school district representatives received updates on Impact Aid from the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, they heard from national experts on a number of important education issues, including teacher retention, school safety, and career technical education.

“Every student who attends Lackland ISD benefits from Impact Aid” continued Dr. Burnie Roper. “It is a program that our school district will continue to fight for”.

Month of the Military Child

     April is the designated month to recognize the resilience, resoluteness, and relentlessness of “military brats.” Unfortunately, there are numerous amounts of struggle that military children must learn to cope with. These struggles include deployments, separation and frequent moves. “Purple up” is a term used to spread awareness of the month through a single color. We encourage this color to represent the strength and resiliency of military children. Every military child has a unique set of circumstances, however difficult, we can overcome them. That is the power behind the Month of the Military Child.

     In honor of this special month, S2S and JS2S are taking action in recognizing these students. As a parent, you can send your child a message. This is for students at the junior high and high school. These messages can be filled out via the link below. This includes their names, grade, and related information. These messages will be transferred to purple cut-out hearts and given to your children. The link below will need to be filled out by April 9th, messages will be handed to your students on April 12th.

This project is monumental in supporting our military students and school. You can be a part of this important month, and recognize your child’s resilience! Make sure to show your support for Month of the Military Child and send your child a note! (By April 9th)

Stacey Happenings 

The Bots in Blue, Stacey High School’s competition Robotics Team, took part in the FIRST in Texas San Antonio District Meet March 8th – 10th at John Jay High School. Competitors were comprised of 40 of the best teams from 2A-6A schools from across Texas. The grueling 3-day competition was capped off by an awards ceremony during which, the team received the prestigious Imagery Award that recognizes engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance.

Thanks to Ms. Cervantes, Ms. Polis, Mr. Staples, and many others who came out and cheered on the students for all the hard work and dedication they have invested in this academic endeavor.

Congratulations Hailey Barentine and Sabastian Vargas.  The Team competed recently at the Sabinal Varsity tennis tournament on March 7-8.  Hailey finish 5th in the Girls A Singles and Sabastian finish 5th in the Boys B Singles each earning consolation metals for the great effort.  

The boy's golf team competed in the Comfort High School Golf Tournament at the Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort, TX on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. All of the boys shot their personal best for the school. Isaac Council shot an 87, Michael Hornsby shot an 84 and Conner Council (pictured above) shot an 81. Conner placed 5th out of 90 golfers at the tournament. It is the first time a Stacey golfer has placed at an invitational tournament!! Great job Eagles!!!

3rd and 5th graders collaborate with middle  and high school students to create Cardboard Kids to raise awareness about child abuse. Stay tuned for the final pieces!

Go Public is pleased to reveal the 2019 high school student artists featured on billboards and bus wraps throughout the San Antonio area. We had a record 229 entries from high school students throughout SA! It was truly incredible to see the talent.

Texas Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Brian Woods from Northside ISD, will do the coin toss! 
Superintendents and trustees from all seventeen San Antonio-area ISDs will be recognized, as a group, on the field prior to the game. 
The first 100 students who purchase tickets will have the opportunity to high-five the players.  All students wearing their school t-shirts to the game will participate in the Go Public pregame parade. Students must check in 1 hour before the game in section 101.
 
PLUS- All students in attendance showing school pride by wearing their school’s t-shirt will be allowed to participate in the Go Public Pre-game Parade prior to the start of the game.  Must check-in one (1) hour prior to the game at the table outside Section 101.

We will have our Buy One Get One (BOGO) Scholastic Book Fair March 20th-29th in the Lyons Center at Lackland ISD. We will begin set up on the 18th, and be open for business the 20th. We will be open 8-3:45, and will stay open until 5pm on both Thursday’s. We look forward to seeing you all there! All visitors will need to check in with one of the school offices before shopping at the book fair.
