Lackland ISD Proposes to Adopt New Instructional Materials
The current Texas State Board of Education’s Instructional Materials Review and Approval process includes the adoption of high-quality instructional materials for English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) and Math courses. A committee of teachers and administrators from both the elementary and secondary campuses have reviewed state approved materials and narrowed their choices to those they seek to recommend for board approval. Lackland Elementary is seeking to recommend Savvas for K-5 ELAR and Stacey Jr./Sr. High is proposing STEMScopes for 6-8 math and Algebra I. Prior to making this recommendation to the Lackland ISD Board of Trustees, the committee is providing an opportunity for parents of children currently enrolled in the district to preview materials and share their feedback. The parent review process is supported by the links provided below and will be open through Friday, April 11, 2025. Parents are encouraged to share their feedback, questions, and concerns with the district using the following link. You may also contact, Dr. Tonya Hyde at hyde.t@lacklandisd.net for prompt attention to your inquiries.

Introducing
Dr. Hunter Shelby |

Mr. Hunter Shelby, Principal of Stacey Jr/Sr High School successfully defended his dissertation and is officially Dr. Hunter Shelby! We are so very proud of him. Way to go Dr. Shelby! |

Stacey Jr/Sr High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 3545, the “Bots in Blue,” delivered an extraordinary performance at the FIT District San Antonio Event, held March 13-15, 2025, at the Freeman Coliseum. As an alliance captain, the team led their alliance to the finals, securing a remarkable second-place finish against formidable opponents from schools with student populations vastly exceeding Stacey’s modest enrollment.
|
|
|
Competing against a field of 42 teams, the Bots in Blue demonstrated exceptional skill, strategy, and teamwork, outpacing schools with populations over ten times their size. Notable competitors included United High School in Laredo (4,300 students), Obra D. Tompkins High School in Katy (3,000 students), The Woodlands-College Park HS & Academy of Science and Technology in The Woodlands (3,000 students), Roosevelt High School in San Antonio (2,900 students), and Brandeis High School in San Antonio (2,800 students), among others. The full list of large-school contenders featured powerhouses like John Jay High School (2,600 students), Johnny Economedes High School (2,600 students), Sam Houston High School (2,500 students), and Edinburg North High School (2,500 students), with several others ranging from 1,300 to 2,400 students.
Despite their smaller size, the Bots in Blue rose to the challenge. Their journey to the finals showcased their innovative robot design, supported by sponsors Lackland ISD, DoD STEM, Air Force STEM, Texas Workforce Commission, and others, as well as the dedication of their student engineers and mentors. Leading their alliance as captain, Team 3545 navigated the competition’s rigorous qualification rounds and playoffs, ultimately earning a silver-medal finish that defied the odds.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work, creativity, and determination of our students,” said Mr. Kinsey, head coach of the Bots in Blue. “To captain an alliance and reach the finals against schools with thousands more students is incredible. It shows that passion and ingenuity can compete with any advantage in numbers. It is also a tribute to the hard work and dedication to Assistant Coach Mrs. Huerta and parent mentor Richard Bramlett.”
The Bots in Blue are now gearing up for their next challenge: the Space City (Houston) meet, scheduled for March 28-30, 2025. This event will be hosted by the NASA Johnson Space Center-mentored Team 118 “Robonauts,” currently the top-ranked team in Texas and the number 8 team in the world out of 3,705 FRC teams. A strong performance this weekend could position the Bots in Blue favorably for the State Championship in Houston, set for April 2-5, 2025, where the top 28 finishers will earn a coveted spot at the World Championships, also in Houston, from April 15-19, 2025.
The San Antonio District Event, hosted by FIRST in Texas, brought together some of the region’s top robotics teams, making the Bots in Blue’s performance all the more impressive. Their success highlights the strength of STEM education at Stacey Jr/Sr High School and the impact of FIRST Robotics in fostering skills like problem-solving, leadership, and collaboration.
As they celebrate this milestone, Team 3545 looks forward to building on their momentum for the remainder of the 2025 season. The Stacey Jr/Sr High School community proudly salutes the Bots in Blue for their stellar showing and their inspiring example of what a small but mighty team can achieve.

Team Marvel✯✯US, FTC Team 18519, the all-female robotics team from Virginia Allred Stacey Jr/Sr High School on Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, has secured a coveted spot at the UIL 1A-4A State Championships following their standout performance at the Central Area Championships on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The team earned their advancement as one of the top five teams in their category, propelled by exceptional judged scores and the prestigious “Think” award. They will now compete against Texas’s finest at the state championships on May 10, 2025, in Corpus Christi.
|
|
|
Since their rookie season in 2020, Team Marvel✯✯US has participated in 27 official FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) events, breaking barriers in the male-dominated field of robotics. Named after Major General Jeannie Leavitt—the U.S. Air Force’s first female fighter pilot, whose career inspired Marvel’s Captain Marvel—the team embodies resilience and innovation. In 2020, Leavitt visited the team with her daughter, sharing her experiences and even driving their robot, a moment that continues to fuel their mission to inspire girls in STEM.
Throughout the 2024-2025 season, themed “INTO THE DEEP, presented by RTX,” the team showcased a robot designed with underwater-inspired features and advanced sensors, excelling in both competition and judged categories. Their qualification for state highlights their technical skill, teamwork, and community impact—qualities that also earned them recognition beyond the playing field. This year, they inspired hundreds of young girls by demonstrating their robot at the Girl Scouts of San Antonio’s 100th anniversary celebration, reinforcing their commitment to fostering the next generation of female STEM leaders.
Advancing to the state championships again this year after earning a 3rd place finish last year is a huge milestone. In addition, this will be their 3rd appearance in the UIL State Championships in 4 years. As an all-female team, it shows that girls can thrive in robotics and STEM. The team is inspired by Major General Leavitt’s legacy and excited to compete in Corpus Christi.
The UIL State Championships, hosted by the University Interscholastic League (UIL), will bring together 24 teams in each category—1A-4A, 5A, and 6A—from across Texas. Team Marvel✯✯US will represent the Central Region, which spans Waco to San Antonio and Corpus Christi, as they vie for top honors, including Gold, Silver, or Bronze trophies and additional judged awards. Their preparation is underway, focusing on refining their robot and strategy to take on the state’s best.
Team Marvel✯✯US’s journey is a testament to their determination, skill, and dedication to breaking stereotypes. With a strong foundation rooted in Leavitt’s visit and a season marked by community engagement and competitive success, they are poised to make waves at the state championships—and beyond. About FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC):
FTC is a global robotics competition for students in grades 7-12, where teams design, build, and program robots using a reusable kit powered by Android technology. FIRST’s mission is to inspire young people to pursue STEM education and careers, with 61% of alumni declaring majors in engineering or computer science by their fourth year of college. |

Multiple Perspectives
One key way we aim to foster critical thinking in our students is by encouraging them to consider multiple perspectives.
Multiple Perspectives asks students to consider how another person would think about a topic. By encouraging children to view issues or topics from different angles, we help them develop a well-rounded understanding of the world around them.
Sentence Starters for Multiple Perspectives:
How might a professional in the field view ____ differently from the average person?
What opposing opinions have been voiced about ____? |
