Today is Maintenence Appreciation Day! Thank you to our magnificent team at LISD for keeping things running smoothly!!!

Lackland ISD has partnered with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) to examine systems and processes that impact our instructional programs.  This independent audit will provide district leadership with findings and recommendations to strengthen district operations.  It is most effective when we have input from our parents.  We encourage you to share your voice via the survey links provided below and be instrumental in ensuring that Lackland ISD gains insight and solutions to any barriers to continuous improvement.  If you have questions regarding this survey, please contact Dr. Tonya Hyde at hyde.t@lacklandisd.net

Lackland ISD is working towards fulfilling our vision, Lackland I.S.D. ignites a passion for life-long learning and empowers excellence, by focusing our attention on some key areas. Positive school culture is one of those areas. Our goal is to, by 2027, 100% of Lackland ISD students and staff will feel safe, valued, and engaged at school. We’ll use several metrics to measure and evaluate our progress. The bi-annual survey is one of those tools. The district positive culture committee has worked together to craft a survey that they believe will inform us of our progress, stagnation, or decline. The survey will be available to parents, students, and staff on March 20, 2023, and will remain open until, March 31, 2023. We are excited to receive your feedback as we work together to accomplish these goals. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Humbly,

Stacey Happenings

CyberPatriot News

The Stacey CyberPatriot team,  along with members of over 345 teams from San Antonio and south Texas, attended the annual Mayor’s Cup on Saturday, Feb 25th at the Boeing Center at TechPort.  The event consisted of a college fair, luncheon and awards ceremony.

Officials from  local colleges and universities were available to answer questions and distribute information about their programs. FBI, NSA & other organizations had information on internships and the USAF & Space Force had impressive booths where they talked to the students about available opportunities in cyber and other fields.

Featured speakers were Joe Sanchez- president of CyberTexas, Lt. Gen Kevin Kennedy-commander of the Sixteenth Air Force and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

“It was a great event”, said coach Russell Keller, “the college fair was considerably larger than previous years. I was glad to see our students talking to reps from UTSA, TAMUSA and the NSA, among others. We did not take home any awards this year, but I am proud of both teams. Nine of our twelve team members were CyberPatriot rookies,  but both teams made it to the platinum tier.”

Congratulations to the team from Roosevelt HS. They  took home the top prize and will compete at the CyberPatriot National Finals next month in Maryland.

AVID Campus Tour to San Antonio College

Mrs. Huerta and Mr. Bermea took some of our 6th grade AVID students to experience a campus tour at San Antonio College, one of the oldest community colleges in the state.  Besides the rich history lessons learned about the campus, students were also introduced to a variety of 2-year programs that are offered to include nursing, fire science, dental, mortuary science, business, social services, and a ton more. There are over 5000 different degree and certification programs offered today.

San Antonio College is almost 100 years old being founded in 1925 under the auspice of the University of Texas system before being handed over to San Antonio ISD.  It actually started off in two other locations closer to HWY 35 downtown before it was moved to its current location between San Pedro and Main Streets across from San Pedro Park (the 2nd oldest park in the US) in 1951. In the 1980's, the Alamo Community College District was formed to incorporate all of the other community colleges in the area under one umbrella.  There are now 5 community colleges in San Antonio in this Alamo Community College District (ACCD). Interestingly, SAC is about a block away from a fault line as part of the Balcones Fault zone that runs from Del Rio, through San Antonio and up through north Texas that is also connected to the Natural Bridge Caverns.

Another fun fact about this campus is the recent mascot change in 2020 from the "Ranger" to "Ace the Armadillo" as a unanimous update voted on by students, staff and campus leadership. The origins of the Texas Rangers are not of a pretty past that the campus wanted to be associated with any longer. It was time for a change. For decades, the school newspaper, the "Ranger," has provided opportunities for excellence in journalism and news for the SAC community.  It recently has stopped paper publications but will continue to provide digital articles.  No news on if the name of the almost 100-year-old publications will also get a rebranding.

As we get ready to start exploring the different pathways for post-secondary education, community colleges are a popular avenue for some  students to take their basics at a smaller school where the tuition is cheaper, and then transfer to a larger 4-year university. The smaller class sizes are sometimes a better fit for first time college students to gain their independence and maturity in an environment that is not as overwhelming as a lecture hall with 100's of students. Some of the other pathways we will explore are trade schools, military, four-year public, and four-year private universities.

Just how much heat does our sun give off every day?

The heat energy from the sun gives off enough heat  to evaporate nearly a trillion tons of water.  Water in lakes, rivers, and oceans absorb heat energy:  when the water molecules get heated to just the right temperature, they change into water vapor and rise up to form clouds.  During this process, the evaporating water cools the lakes, rivers, and oceans, just like evaporationg sweat cools your body.

What would happen if Earth's surface weren't 72 percent covered in water?  We would have to find a new home.  Earth would be way too hot to live on!

We live on an amazning planet, for sure!!!

Good Information

“My Child Needs More Time with the Speech Therapist!”

This is one of the most common requests that I hear from parents of children with autism, and I TOTALLY get where you’re coming from. A speech therapist helps children talk better. You want your child to talk better. It makes sense that increasing the amount of time that your child sees the therapist would help them talk better more quickly, right?
Well, it’s more complicated than that.
