Parent, Family, and Community Engagement

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) believes that meaningful partnerships between schools, families, and communities are the foundation of effective schools and critical to a child’s educational well-being.  It is further grounded in the belief that parents, families, educators, and community members work together as full partners, hold themselves mutually accountable, and have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in achievement for all students.

Objective

This document was developed to align with the expectations of the State Board of Education (SBOE) vision and meet the requirements in the Every Student Succeeds Act as they relate to parent and family engagement in Texas.  The document sets parameters for the implementation of parent and family engagement activities led by the Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Statewide Initiative and aligns to the SBOE vision statements for Family Engagement and Empowerment noted in the SBOE’s Long-Range Plan for Public Education.  This plan also provides a framework that informs parent and family engagement activities across the state as advised by the Texas Council on Parent and Family Engagement.  The Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Statewide Initiative developed the plan in consultation with the Texas Council on Parent and Family Engagement and the Title I Committee of Practitioners.

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Grover Cleveland signed and congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.

Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

Lackland ISD Parents/Guardians,

This is to inform you of a practice change in medication administration on campus beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

In past years, Lackland ISD nursing staff have administered over-the-counter medication supplied by a student’s parent/guardian with parent/guardian consent and have not required physician, podiatrist, or dentist authorization. The Texas Board of Nursing has given guidance to school nurses regarding this practice, and over-the-counter medications will no longer be given by licensed nursing staff WITHOUT a physician, podiatrist, or dentist authorization AND parent authorization.

If your student needs over-the-counter medications, nursing staff will require a physician, podiatrist, or dentist authorization in order to administer the medication in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing licensing standards. The medication form is linked here.

We understand this is a shift in previous practice, and we will continue to support our students’ health and learning needs while at school while incorporating this practice standard.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Lackland ISD nursing staff:

Mrs. Flores's class is becoming a classroom family by collaborating to build the tallest tower, sharing "All About Me" in a bag, and creating group flags to show their unity. ❤️

1st graders were engineering a track that would allow a marble to move freely from one end to another.  The student's worked with a partner to create their designs.

4th and 5th grade students participated in a major art exhibition with their art teacher Mr. Garcia over the Summer at the San Antonio Central Library Gallery. Student's designed a ceramic mask cast from a local San Antonian and based their character on a variety of topics. Many students came to the opening and the show ran for 5 weeks.

The piece the kids collaborated on is now on display at the Brook Hollow public library for the next two months.

It will then travel to other branches in the San Antonio public library system. What an opportuntity for our students artwork to be showcased in such a manner. The piece will eventually end up at LISD's media center.

The San Antonio Express News did a wonderful story on the exhibit!

Great job Lackland Elementary!

Gifted & Talented Corner

Supporting Gifted Students During the Transition Back to School

Gifted children often have unique social and emotional needs that may require special support as they return to school. Here are key considerations:

Curiosity and Overthinking: Gifted learners tend to ask deep, spiraling questions, which can lead to challenges like difficulty focusing on tasks, sleep problems, or intense fixations on finding answers. It’s important to provide them with an outlet for their questions while setting boundaries to prevent overexposure to complex topics like the coronavirus or other major events.

Emotional Intensity: Gifted students may have a strong sense of justice and react intensely to complex situations, leading to anxiety or tunnel vision. Offer them safe outlets for their emotions and guide them to consider multiple perspectives. Help them differentiate what they can control from what they cannot, empowering them to take meaningful action.

Organization: Some gifted students are naturally organized, while others struggle with managing their thoughts and environment. Create a visual schedule for their school day, ensuring it includes structured class times, breaks, and unstructured time. Help them set up a distraction-free learning space and mimic a regular school day routine, including meal and restroom breaks, to ease the transition back to school. Trial and error may be needed to find the best strategies.

By addressing these needs, you can support your gifted child's smooth transition back to school.

AS+K? About Suicide to Save a Life

Thursday, September 5, 2024

   9am-11am Session # 102377

Virtual session # 103365

Suicide prevention happens when people and communities come together. When we know what to look for, pay attention to those around us, and act when we see something, we will reduce the number of deaths by suicide. But where do we begin? Whether you are a professional, a worried parent, or a concerned friend, AS+K? training provides resources to help you learn the signs to look for, how to talk to someone about what they are feeling, and where to go for more help. The instructors have been trained by the Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative. (This session is repeated on 5/14/25.)
