Whereas, students are the future and, by investing in them today, we are ensuring our world for tomorrow; and
Whereas, families deserve to feel confident that their children will be cared for when they are at school; and
Whereas, all students have a right to have their physical and mental health needs safely met while in the school setting; and
Whereas, students today face more complex and life-threatening health problems requiring care in school; and
Whereas, school nurses have served a critical role in improving public health and in ensuring student’s academic success for more than 120 years; and
Whereas, school nurses address the home and community factors (e.g. social determinants) that impact students’ health; and
Whereas, school nurses are professional nurses that advance the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievements of all students by serving on the frontlines and providing a critical safety net for our nation’s most fragile children; and
Whereas, school nurses act as a liaison to the school community, families, and healthcare providers on behalf of children’s health by promoting wellness and improving health outcomes
for our nation’s children; and
Whereas, school nurses support the health and educational success of children and youth by providing access to care when children’s cognitive development is at its peak; and
Whereas, school nurses are members of school-based teams (e.g. school health services, 504/IEP, disaster/emergency planning) providing care coordination to address the school population; and
Whereas, school nurses understand the link between health and learning and are in a position to make a positive difference for children every day, therefore be it!

Lackland ISD showed their appreciation for their teachers by providing an amazing lunch! Dr. Roper and his crew manned the grill cooking burgers and sausages while district staff served up delectable sides. It was quite the feast topped off with Dr. Ropers' famous peach cobbler ala mode! |

Meet Mr. Payne! By: Morgan Root, 9th grade |
|
|
Jonathan Payne will be the STEAM teacher at Lackland Elementary next year! He has been here at LISD for over 12 years. In addition to teaching technology to elementary students, he is also the Stacey Jr. High boys basketball coach. How long have you been teaching at Lackland Elementary? I’ve been teaching here since 2011
Have you ever taught at a different district? Yes, I taught at Harlandale ISD for 2 years What grades have you taught? I’ve taught grades PK all the way 8th Where are you from originally?
San Antonio, Texas Where did you go to college? St. Mary’s University What subject and grades do you currently teach? I teach the Technology class at Lackland Elementary for PK – 5th grade students How do you feel about being next year’s STEAM teacher at Lackland Elementary?
I am absolutely thrilled to be next year's STEAM teacher at Lackland Elementary! It's a fantastic opportunity to inspire young minds in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. I can't wait to dive into exciting projects and activities with the students, fostering curiosity and creativity while having a blast together. Get ready, Lackland Elementary, for a fun-filled year of learning and exploration! What is your favorite part of what you do?
My favorite part of being a STEAM teacher is witnessing the spark of curiosity ignite in students as they explore new concepts and ideas. There's nothing quite as rewarding as seeing them make connections between different subjects, develop problem-solving skills, and express their creativity. It's a true privilege to be able to foster a love of learning and help shape the next generation of innovators, artists, and critical thinkers. What is the greatest challenge you have faced while teaching?
The greatest challenge I've faced while teaching is addressing diverse learning styles and needs of my students. To overcome this, I've developed a flexible teaching approach with various methods and materials to accommodate different learning preferences. It's rewarding to see students thrive when their individual needs are met. Tell us about your family.
My family is my greatest joy! My wife and I have six wonderful children, each with their unique personalities. Our home is always lively, and we cherish the time we spend together. Their support and love inspire me in both my personal life and as a teacher.
Thank you Mr. Payne! |

There are literally MILLIONS of children playing Rock Paper Scissors every day!! While the exact origins of this game of skill, chance and decision are murky, it is widely played on every continent. Traditionally, the game has been used to settle disputes; more recently the game has been played to settle championships.
For the past six years, hundreds of "hand athletes" compete for the RPS World Championship title. If you are thinking of putting your hand in the ring, you might want to practice.
Inventor Steve Hoefer has come up with an RPS training glove. It's an electronic glove capable of playing Rock Paper Scissors against its wearer. Pam Torre 6th Grade Social Studies

Last PTSO meeting of the school year is coming up. We are really trying to rebuild and grow the PTSO and this is where we need help. We need you. We need staff and parents to support us. We have so many ideas and plans for this upcoming year but can not do it alone. If you have ever been interested in volunteering or even holding a position on the board now is the time. We will be voting in the whole board at the next meeting. Every seat is open to vote on. So if this sounds like something you would be interested in please send us a message so we can answer any questions and get your name on the ballot. If holding a board position isn't for you, there are still so many ways to ways to help. We hope you will consider joining us on May 15th @ 5:00 pm in the Cynthia Lyons Center. See you there!
