LISD Toy Drive to Ft. Sam Houston

Thanks to everyone who took the time to drop off a toy (or more) to help brighten the day of a military child who has to spend Christmas in the hospital. Many of you opened your hearts and we were able to take approximately 40 gifts over to SAMMC for these wonderful children. If you are blessed to have children with good health, please take a moment this holiday season to pray for those parents and grandparents who may not be as fortunate. Please know that the gift you provided will brighten some child’s day. Thank you so much for responding! You all are the greatest!

Auxiliary – Alfredo (Freddy) Perez serves the district as our Lead Maintenance Specialist.  Freddy provides exceptional support ensuring our classrooms, common areas, and administrative spaces are safe, comfortable, and well maintained. When emergencies arise that require after hours support, Freddy can be counted on to volunteer to work late.  Most recently Freddy worked many extra hours to support gas line testing and help with a gas leak repair on the high school campus.  His commitment and extra hours ensured these repairs were completed quickly with minimal disruption in facility services.  We are proud to recognize Freddy Perez as one of our Fall 2019 Above & Beyond award winners.

Para-Professional – Jeanette Flores serves as our Library Assistant at the Media Center. Mrs. Flores has been with the district for over 9 years including her 3 years at the Media Center.  During this time, she has become an invaluable asset to the team.  According to our School Librarian, Mrs. Flores is our “Library Collection Expert. She is a great partner for collaboration as we look to the Library skills we want to be taught and she comes up with creative activities for the students.” Mrs. Flores’ calm demeanor and optimistic attitude allow her to be a positive influence on our students when they are having a difficult day.  Mrs. Flores helps ensure that our students have a positive experience in our Library every day.  We are proud to recognize Jeanette Flores as one of Fall 2019 Above & Beyond award winners.

Professional – Rebecca Huerta serves as a Math teacher at Stacey Junior High School. Ms. Huertas is a highly qualified and passionate teacher who not only does an outstanding job teaching regular and honors math classes to our junior high students but goes above-and-beyond by taking on other important teacher roles and exceling. Ms. Huerta also serves the district as our Avid Secondary Campus Coordinator and co-facilitator for the new Teacher Induction Program.  Additionally, as co-sponsor for the Stacey Robotics Program, Ms. Huerta dedicates many extra hours and does an outstanding job helping our Robotics Teacher manage this very important program. We are proud to recognize Rebecca Huerta as one of our Fall 2019 Above & Beyond award winners.

Professional – Danielle Rabidas serves as a High School Math teacher at Stacey High School.  Mrs. Rabidas is an exemplary teacher and member of the Stacey community.  She is loved by students and faculty alike and exhibits her dedication to her work on a daily basis, holding her students to a high standard of excellence.  She serves as a department chair, as coach of the Stacey bowling team, and provides students with a place where they can always receive assistance with their homework after school through the homework center.  Mrs. Rabidas is a great contributor to the Stacey family and to the success of our students.  We are proud to recognize Danielle Rabidas as one of our Fall 2019 Above & Beyond award winners.

In support of the district’s School Climate and morale boosting goal, the district’s administrative team participated in a team-building activity by building and decorating a gingerbread house. With only 30 minutes to complete the activity there was plenty of laughter, anxious moments and some great creations. Amber Upton, the Administrative Support Secretary won 1st place for her gingerbread house (pictured on the left) and James Flores, Technology Technician got honorable mention for his gingerbread plane (pictured on the right).

On Saturday December 14th, The Stacey Robotics Team, Bots in Blue, competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) South San Antonio Metro League against 27 other teams. The students were outstanding as they overcame some hardware and software issues during the meet and placed 3rd in their grouping. They also represented themselves, their parents, Stacey HS, and LISD with distinction, grace, professionalism, and sportsmanship.

This past weekend, the Stacey S2S bunch hosted a school-wide service project at Fort Sam Houston. All throughout the month of November and early December, S2S sold wreaths at school and to their families. On Saturday, December 14th, 40 students got on the bus to attend the ceremony and wreath-laying honoring our fallen troops at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. We ended up having over 60 people support this project - students, staff, and families! There was a nice lady we friended while we were there who taught us about some wreath-laying traditions. She said that after you lay the wreath it is important to stand back, say the person’s name, and give them a moment of silence. This gave all our students a different perspective and some much- needed meaning to what we were doing that day. All together we placed 700 wreaths! This experience is definitely one we will never forget.

This week, English 4 students brought in a recent selfie that reflects something about their inner thoughts on self/identity.  Seniors were asked to match up their classmates' written monologues with a selfie.  It was a fun activity not only as a self-reflection but as a way to get to know their peers a little more.

An Interview with Sam Gagnon, 12th grade

By: Bella Evans, 12th grade

Image

1. How long have you been here at Stacey?

This is my second school year at Stacey. I moved here from Colorado shortly before my junior year.

2. What is something you like about Stacey?

Surprisingly, I really enjoy the small school setting. I think I’m a lot closer with teachers and I’ve had the opportunity to get to know more people since I have more classes with different people.

3. Since you have been here, is there anything you’ve gotten involved in that you hadn’t thought about doing prior to coming here?

Actually yes. I joined CyberPatriot because it sounded fun and I had a couple of friends I knew were going to do it.

4. Speaking of CyberPatriot, what’s your favorite part about being on the team?

Well, I really like Mr. Keller, so being able to do something outside of class with him is always fun. I think what’s really unique about this team is that people come and go and you have an opportunity to learn from others. Having people from the military who actually do this stuff every day is nice because they’re really nice about helping us. I highly recommend this club for anyone - even if you don’t think you’d be good at it.

5. Is there any other club or activity that you would recommend to others?

I had not done Cross Country since my Freshman year, but I joined my senior year and even though I’m not the best runner, I had a really good time with my teammates and Coach Rigney is great. It’s also very good exercise.

6. You’re a senior this year, what’s after high school?

I know for a fact that I want to go to college after this. I have a general idea of what I want to do… probably something with math.

7. What is your favorite subject in school?

Digital media because it covers a wide variety of topics that tend to all be computer based and I have a background in computers.

8. What do you think you’ll miss most about high school and what piece of advice would you give to new high schoolers?

The lack of responsibility and stress because I’m a little scared that college is going to be a lot more stressful. As for the piece of advice, you should try something even if it doesn’t sound like something you’d normally do.

Join the Stacey Garden Club!

by: Miranda Lincoln, freshman

Garden Club is an extracurricular activity that began at Stacey in the year 2015. The Garden Club is sponsored by the seventh and eighth grade Life Science teacher Ms. Miller,  who teaches in the 4400 building. Since she had taught at another garden class before she arrived at Stacey, Mrs. Miller decided to take the position to lead Garden Club. Mrs. Miller gardened a great deal at her old campus and had been involved in a gardening program. Garden Club isn't about just planting crops and getting your hands dirty; in Garden Club you can help fix up the rose bed that was made into a memorial for a former student who had passed in an auto accident. You can also take part in the vegetable plant and herb sale.

Image

Not only has Garden Club done all those wonderful things but they have planned for another amazing year filled with working in the greenhouse, watching Elodea (aquatic plants) grow in a production bed, and experimenting with the growth of  second succulents. Garden Club has also accomplished some very hard tasks such as getting things for the plant aquarium, working around the maintenance needed for the greenhouse, and trying to grow new and different plants. Garden Club is open to anybody in middle school and to any interested high schoolers. The club works around everybody's schedule and attendance isn't mandatory. In this club, you're able to learn new things every week. Are you interested in Garden Club? You can attend every Thursday after school at 3:15 in the room 4410.

(Joyeux Noel - Merry Christmas).  Ms. Hiers, learning lab class, was definitely in the holiday spirit.  The students entered the door decorating contest and won.  The theme was Holiday around the world and the students chose Paris, France. The door was designed using a handmade 3D Christmas tree, handmade ornaments, the Eiffel tower, a star and an educational fact.

                                                "A little history fact"

The first recorded Christmas Tree can be found on the keystone sculpture of a private home in Turckheim Alsace.  This dates back to 1576.

What an awesome job they did!!

Elementary Happenings

Computer Science Education week, December 9-13, calls for students to do the annual Hour of Code. At Lackland Elementary, we had kids from kindergarten through 5th grade participate in coding activities with apps like CodeMonkey, Box Island, Coding Safari, CodeSpark, Kodable, Tynker, and Swift Playground. Pre-readers use images in place of text code to give sequenced commands to characters in games or puzzles, and older students pair the images with the actual text code to learn the basic syntax of most coding languages. Students use critical thinking to solve complex problems and celebrate their successes AND failures, because the best learning comes from making mistakes.

Learn more about the movement and how to get involved at home at hourofcode.com.

“Scared Safe:” Parents and Families Preventing School Violence This conversational training targets parents, family members, and loved ones with students in K-12 schools to empower them in their ability to help in the mission to prevent targeted school violence. This raw and eye opening training addresses those factors about which parents must be aware that may signal a child is at risk for engaging in violence. Strategies as to how to have those challenging conversations with our children will be explored. Parents will be confronted with the pitfalls of overvaluation and labeling our youth as “special” to prevent the fostering of unhealthy esteem and narcissism that contributes to poor coping skills, entitlement, bullying, and in extreme cases, violence. Moreover, the training aims to dispel myths about what contributes to school violence and the hysteria of these incredibly rare events being perceived as an epidemic. Parents and families will leave feeling more equipped to engage threat assessment and violence prevention strategies in the home, the Mecca of first line defense for prevention.
