Impact Aid Survey Form
Please complete by December 12, 2022

Lackland ISD Parents and Guardians Who Live Off Base,

The purpose of this message is to ask for your cooperation in completing the Impact Aid Survey via email. If you live off base, in the last week you should have received an email asking you to complete the Impact Aid Survey form and return it to the district. Only one form needs to be completed per household unless you have more than three (3) students enrolled at Lackland ISD. Your cooperation with completing the form no later than December 12th, is of the upmost importance, know that all information is kept confidential.

This survey is essential to the district’s funding as almost half of our budget comes from Impact Aid funds received from the United States Department of Education for the operation of our schools. Without these funds, we would not be able to operate and serve our students.

Lackland ISD qualifies as a “heavily impacted” district because our district’s boundaries are the same as Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland installation we serve and all our students are federally connected. Impact Aid assists local school districts like ours that are unable to levy taxes for general operations or sell bonds for facility construction due to the presence of tax-exempt Federal property. Essentially, Impact Aid funds are provided by the federal government in lieu of ad valorem or local property taxes. To name a few things, these funds are used in our District for teachers and paraeducators salaries, technology equipment, and extra-curricular activities.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Respectfully,

Burnie L. Roper
Superintendent

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Our 6-8 AVID elective students have been writing emails to college admissions offices to request information and promotional items to help them represent a variety of post-secondary institutions for their college fair projects in the spring. They have been pretty heavy into the whole writing process on a variety of projects, but this one in particular is exciting to be part of when the students start to get the mail coming in.  Gabby Sheehan has already started making connections with the University of the Incarnate Word. Not only have they sent her some pretty fancy swag, but they have also committed to being present when the AVID classes present their college fair projects in May.

The Stacey bands and choirs will present their annual Christmas concert on Monday, December 12 at 6:00 pm in the Lackland ISD Auditorium.  Everyone is invited to join us for a dose of Christmas spirit!

Stacey Flashback: Meagan Fleming

Class of 2016

By: Natalie O’Mary, 9th grade

When did you go to Stacey?

I started halfway through 7th grade and onto 12th grade, graduating in 2016.

Were you in any clubs?

Yearbook, FCCLA, S2S, Student Council, Spanish Club, UIL, and the Sports Medicine Team. If sports count then volleyball, basketball, track, and tennis.

How did going to a smaller school impact you?

I believe it made me adaptable because your environment and the people around you constantly changed. I also got involved in so many extracurricular activities that I would never have participated in at a larger school.

What was your favorite class at Stacey?

I had a lot of outstanding teachers but my favorite class had to be Yearbook with Mr. Keller. I always say that yearbook class led me to the creative career I chose to pursue in digital media/marketing.

What was your favorite memory at Stacey?

Either going to the playoffs in volleyball my senior year with Coach Greeness or being the Editor of the yearbook for three years.

Do you have any advice for students currently attending Stacey?

I know sometimes being at a smaller school makes it seem like there's not a large pool of friends but know that people come and go all the time so there will be new opportunities for you to build community. Some hard times you face right now aren't that bad in the grand scheme of life, so keep on going. You get to choose your path after high school! Take advantage of the fantastic teachers and extracurricular activities because they may shape the career that you decide to pursue.

Where did you go to college?

I first attended Hardin-Simmons University and  then transferred to Texas State University and earned a degree in Digital Media Innovation & Mass Communication.

What job are you doing now?

I am a Global Social Media Specialist at Rackspace Technology.

Where do you live now?

I am still in San Antonio!

What's your favorite restaurant?

Gosh, I don't have one! There are too many options! However, I will always be down to visit Chick-Fil-A!

Do you have a pet?

I have a German shepherd mix named Harley and a black cat named Jasper.

Thank you for your time! Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for this opportunity! I loved attending Stacey and I look forward to reading more of the newsletters from previous classmates :)

Thank you, Meagan!

Why Is the Ocean Salty?

Oceans are salty because fresh water flows into them.  Okay, that answer does not seem to make sense, but fresh water flow is major contributor of salt.

The original oceans were probably only slightly salty.  Over millions of years, rivers flowed over the newly formed land, carving out canyons, dissolving mountains, and picking up lots of dissolved minerals, including salt.  These dissolved minerals all eventually flow into the ocean.  Meanwhile, the sun heats the ocean surface, causing water to evaporate.  What's left behind are those dissolved minerals--a cycle that continues today.

The Atlantic Ocean has the greatest amount of river water flowing into it, so it is the saltiest of the oceans.

 UIL Academics

Parents, thank you for your support with our UIL academic competition. UIL academics offer more activities than any other UIL division, with 30 contests at the high school level and 20 A+ Academic contests for grades 2-8. Almost a million students take part in UIL academic contests every year. These activities, exist to complement the academic curriculum and are designed to motivate students as they achieve higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to show ability in specific skills. We all, students, and staff, had a wonderful time competing with other school districts. Our students were great cheerleaders for each other. We could not do this without you as our partners.
