Lackland ISD Celebrates Board Appreciation Month
During the month of January each year, school districts across the state celebrate individuals who have made the decision to devote their time and energy to serve school districts in their local communities. Their goal is to provide the best education possible to students in those districts. These unpaid heroes work to develop policy and budgets that support the educational goals of the district. The past few years have been extremely difficult for many school boards across the state and the nation as they deal with the fallout from the pandemic and other social issues. We are blessed to have a stable school board who continue to prioritize the needs of our students and staff.
Lackland ISD is truly blessed to have a slate of amazing board members that include service members, a parent, and civil service workers. All our board members are either currently serving in the military or have served and understand the needs of military families. We are grateful for their sacrifice and their support of our students, staff, and community. We honor our board members not just this month, but throughout the year for everything they do for Lackland ISD. We will formally recognize our board members at the January 24, 2023, board meeting. |

Lackland ISD Superintendent Hosts District’s Second Townhall Meeting
On January 18, 2023, District Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper hosted the second townhall meeting of the 2022-23 school year. The meeting kicked off with a welcome acknowledging his appreciation for those in attendance. Dr. Roper then provided a safety and security briefing, updates from the October 23, 2022, meeting, extra-curricular updates, and provided responses to parent questions.
In his safety and security address, Dr. Roper shared background information related to the January 10, 2023, incident involving a toy weapon. He shared the timeline of events, security forces involvement, and follow up steps that occurred. He requested parent support to reinforce with their children, the importance of reporting concerning activities, specifically violations of the district’s code of conduct.
Dr. Roper followed up with an update to the October 23, 2022, meeting and reported opportunities for students to letter in sports and other UIL events to include robotics. Students have received their “Letter” for participation in various sports that have occurred this school year. He discussed survey results related to baseball that resulted in 23 potential participants. Given this information, the district is strategizing how to secure appropriate facilities and coaching staff which is expected to take some time to accomplish. Updates to the possibility of Lackland ISD baseball will be provided as new information becomes available. Additionally, in response to stakeholder requests, the Stacey Jr./Sr. High gymnasium is now adorned with posters that display team members to coincide with sports currently in session.
Dr. Roper announced that this year, the prom will be held at Mitchell Hall instead of the Stacey cafeteria. He also solicited parent support toward ongoing engagement with district committees. To increase future engagement in the April 5, 2023, townhall meeting, the district will make every effort to ensure appropriate communication regarding the event. We hope to have you join us in the Lackland ISD auditorium to inform our efforts to better serve our students, your children.

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents. To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!
ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to: *Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app *View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events *Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents
For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Stacey Robotics: FRC Kickoff
By: Anna Williams, 10th grade
The First Robotics Competition (FRC) has started! Read below on how Stacey's FRC game kickoff went on the 7th and what they plan to do for this year's new and challenging game! In order to help the kids strategize, get their juices flowing, and understand the game deeper, Mr. Kinsey laid out the game in human size. The kids moved around in chairs acting as robots and completing tasks like you see in the picture. This helped the kids to fully understand the rules, get more ideas for the robot, and have some good laughs. Robotics is a growing field all over the world and Stacey is so honored to have a robotics team with a great coach willing to dedicate his thought, time, and effort into it wholeheartedly. Brackett Basketball at Stacey
On Tuesday, Jan 17th, the Tigers from Brackettville visited Lackland ISD for three high school games. The Stacey Eagles prevailed in two of the three games, with the JV & Varsity Boys winning while the Varsity girls came up short. Fans were entertained by the Spirit Squad, which is back after a lengthy hiatus. Eagle players and fans had the opportunity to purchase a wide selection of goodies at the concession stand, with proceeds benefitting the sports Booster Club. The fans were also treated to a halftime show at the final game featuring a stunning cover rendition of Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ by senior Rudy Morales with some help from the Spirit Squad.

Where do plastic bags come from? |
|
|
Plastic bags are made from crude oil, natural gas, and other petrochemicals. Unfortunately, about 273,973,603 plastic bags are thrown away every day in America.
That is almost one bag per person in the United States. Even worse, Americans recycle LESS than 1 percent of their plastic bags.
Recently, Ireland enacted a bag tax, which caused a 95 percent reduction plastic bag use throughout the country.
We use plastic bags for our muddy shoes, so we are not tracking mud in on carpets and floors. We use plastic bags as trash can liners.
We also use plastic sandwich bags for our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (or chicken sandwiches, ham sandwiches, egg salad salad sandwiches)....and the list goes on and on!!
Keep recycling those plastic bags!! It will help in reducing plastic bag use at home and at school. Pam Torre 6th Grade Social Studies 7th Grade Texas History
