Academic Resources to Help During Remote Learning

Both parents and students are reminded that there are two valuable resources available to students and parents as they maneuver through remote learning.

The first is Tutor.com. Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, is a program that provides on-demand, online tutoring and homework help at no cost to eligible service members, civilian personnel, and their dependents. With live, expert tutors available 24/7, military-connected students can receive academic help at their moment of need—anywhere they have an internet connection.

The link for this valuable resource is: https://military.tutor.com/home

The second resource is Kahn Academy. Kahn Academy is another resource for students and parents. There are multiple subject and grade levels covered and students can receive personalized help with what they are studying. Kahn Academy is completely free and can be found at the following website:

https://www.khanacademy.org/

We hope that you can utilize these valuable resources.

Cyber Summer

Through a grant from the Region 20 CTE-SSA, Stacey junior Allison Flores attended a virtual Cybersecurity externship in July. Region 20 partnered with ExperienceAmerica to offer the week-long program where students could learn more about Cybersecurity, work on a real-world program and talk to professionals in the industry.

Alternate text

The externship was 5 days long, and each day we covered a different topic and had a visitor join the zoom call that had a job dealing with a particular topic.
Day 1- CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE- we got to talk to Chris Knox and get a presentation about CPS Energy
Day 2- PRIVATE SECTOR- we got to talk to Jeffrey Lubick and get a presentation on Cisco
Day 3-FINANCIAL CRIMES-We got to talk to Tom Ervin and get a presentation about financial data
Day 4-NATIONAL SECURITY AND CYBER CAREER EXPLORATION- We got to talk to Keith Rountree from Facebook and had a conversation and presentation about careers in cybersecurity.
Day 5-SYSTEM HARDENING AND CRYPTOGRAPHY- We put everything we had learned together this last day and went over cryptography. Each day we were given a challenge based off of what we learned that day. Today was a CyberPatriot- based challenge. We were given a virtual image and had to get as many points as possible within 30 minutes.

Overall this program was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone interested in cybersecurity. It was super fun and I made some great connections during the course of the program.

Allison is a junior at Stacey where she is on the Cross Country and CyberPatriot teams. Last year as a sophomore,  she was the captain of the ‘Cyber Sirens’, the first All-Girls CyberPatriot team from Stacey to reach the platinum level, the highest scoring tier a team can reach.

Middle School Students Finds Technology Work Around to tune into Astronaut Andrew Morgan's Zoom Call!

Alternate text

Many students at Stacey Jr/Sr High tuned into the Zoom call on Thursday with Astronaut Andrew Morgan. However, one 7th grade student, Christian Roshio, who couldn't get into the Zoom call, decided to reach out to his Theatre teacher Ms. Prescher for a fix.  Together, they decided that if Ms. Prescher joined the Zoom call, that maybe they could start a Teams Meeting and screen share it and that is exactly what they did! Astronaut Andrew Morgan spoke about challenges during missions and overcoming boundaries, like being away from family while on the ISS.  Christian did the same; saw a challenge and boundaries and overcame them to persevere. Stacey students and teachers continue to make connections and fight through challenges together!

Stacey Jr/Sr High Agenda Planner Distribution

All students in grades 6-12 will receive an agenda planner next week for use at home and school. We will be distributing them at the same time and place that we normally distribute lunches at Stacey and the Medina Annex on Tuesday, September 8th and Thursday, September 10th . If you are unable to pick up the planners during the lunch time pick up, you may also stop by the Stacey Jr/Sr High School front office between 7:45 am – 3:30 pm during the school day to pick them up at your convenience.

The History Behind Labor Day Why is this day called Labor Day? Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September (this year Labor Day falls on Monday; September 7) and it is the day we honor and recognize the labor movement and the contributions of all workers to the development and achievements of the United States. According to the early history and idea concept of Labor Day, Peter J. McGuire, a vice president of the American Federation of Labor, pressed forward with the proposal that a day be set aside for “a general holiday for the laboring classes.” Mr. McGuire recommended that the day begin with a street parade as public demonstration of labor’s solidarity and strength, followed by a picnic. The idea caught on! Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday in September. This is an ideal date for the celebration because we still enjoy warm weather for picnics and parties outside. Labor Day “sits” midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving public holidays. In 1887, Oregon became the first state of the United States to make Labor Day an official public holiday. By the time Labor Day became an official FEDERAL holiday in 1894, thirty U.S states officially celebrated Labor Day. Canada also celebrates Labor Day in September. More than 80 countries around the world celebrate International Worker’s Day on May 1—the ancient European holiday of May Day. Celebrate Labor Day!

Stacey Robotics is going strong and looking for new Team members!

For 3 years running, the Bots in Blue have made it to the UIL Texas State Championship and we are looking forward to making a run at State again this year!

All competitions will have either an all virtual format, or a traditional in-person format, or a combination of the two depending on local health conditions and school policy.

We also recognize the importance of encouraging our female students to participate in STEM activities so an all new, all female robotics team was approved and fully funded. The new team has a distinguished supporter in Air Force Major General Jeannie Leavitt who is currently the Director of Operations and Communications for the AETC. She also happens to be an Aerospace Engineer and was the first combat fighter pilot ever in the USAF. She was a technical advisor on the Captain Marvel movie helping Brie Larson learn what it takes to be the female fighter pilot "Captain Carol Danvers". Maj. Gen, has offered to lend her expertise and encouragement to our, yet unnamed, all-female robotics team.

If you would like to get a sense of the look of robotics competitions, check out this Virtual Reality tour put together by another supporter of our Robotics Program, Boeing: firstinspires.org/vr Or watch it here on youtube: here

The team is meeting virtually in Teams, for now, every Tuesday and Thursday. If you think you might be interested in participating, please email Mr. Kinsey at kinsey.k@lacklandisd.net

Being a member of a team or participating in individual sports requires a commitment from each person involved. It is the intent of these rules and guidelines to clarify to the student/athlete that his/her involvement and commitment to the sports programs at Stacey must be fulfilled in a manner that will enable and obligate him/her to perform to the best of his/her abilities while honorably representing the school. Moreover, these regulations and policies are intended to help direct participants and to clarify any potential misunderstandings about player expectations and policies concerning athletic team membership.
