Lackland ISD Celebrates 70th Anniversary
The Lackland Independent School District was established in 1953 after Lackland AFB petitioned the Health, Education, and Welfare Department in 1951 for building funds. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) was also petitioned to establish an accredited school district. In 1953, TEA and the office of the Bexar County Judge approved the establishment of the Lackland Independent School District. Lackland ISD is one of seven coterminous (meaning the boundaries of the school district are the same as the installation) school systems in the United States. Most families on Lackland Air Force Base, including the Temporary Lodging Facility, send their children to Lackland ISD.
Lackland ISD opened its doors to students in grades 1-6 on September 8, 1953. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, junior and high school age students attended schools in the San Antonio ISD. In 1967, secondary classrooms and a gymnasium (now our elementary gymnasium) were completed for grades beyond 6th grade. One grade level was added a year, beginning with the 7th grade in 1968-1969. The first graduation at Lackland Junior/Senior High School was in May 1974. Since then, both schools have earned the prestigious Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon School Award. Both schools have consistently earned the highest ratings in the Texas Public School Accountability System.
Lackland ISD has continually made improvements to facilities to include building a new Jr/Sr High School spearheaded by Ms. Virginia Allred Stacey, a former Superintendent, for which the current Jr/Sr high school is named. The school district has also added a new wing to Lackland Elementary School and built a new district auditorium and fifth grade wing. The district continues to renovate facilities to ensure that our students and staff have access to the best and most updated facilities possible.
Lackland ISD will be celebrating our 70th anniversary the week of December 11th and we encourage everyone to join in the celebration as we look forward to sustaining the rich history of our amazing district and the many lives of military-connected students that we will continue to impact. Our weeklong anniversary celebration will include the following activities:
Monday, December 11th: Cookies at lunch! Tuesday, December 12th: Anniversary stickers!
Wednesday, December 13th: Coloring Sheet Display! Thursday, December 14th: Trivia! Friday, December 15th: Cupcakes at Lunch!
For activities involving food, the district is taking special precautions to adhere to student safety precautions related to allergies and dietary restrictions. Parents/guardians of students with identified needs are being contacted to participate in decisions related to alternatives. To request alternate considerations for your child please contact Dayna Guyton @ guyton.d@lacklandisd.net.

Attention All Non-Resident Transfer Parents/Guardians:
It is that time of year again where we ask for your assistance in completing the Impact Aid Survey Form. Again, this year survey forms were sent out via Adobe Sign, on Friday, December 1st. Adobe will send you daily reminders to complete the Impact Aid Survey Form. We are asking that all survey forms be returned no later than Friday, December 8, 2023. Importance of Impact Aid:
Impact Aid was created to help fund school districts who do not have a tax base because of federal property in their district. In our case 50% of our budget comes from the State, the other 50% come to us through Impact Aid because our district boundaries are those of JBSA Lackland. This year up to three (3) students can be listed on one (1) survey form. If you have more than three (3) students, please use multiple forms to list all of your students attending a Lackland ISD school.
If you list more than one (1) student on a form Adobe does not have the capability to know that the survey form has been returned. Please contact Donna Sandoval at Sandoval.d@lacklandisd.net. Once she is able to verify that we have received all of the necessary forms, she can disable the request and Adobe will stop with the reminders.
If you have any questions, please contact either myself at Jimenez.d@lacklandisd.net or Donna Sandoval at Sandoval.d@lacklandisd.net.
Thank you for your assistance in completing this important matter. |

What is Working Memory?
*Working memory refers to how we hold on to and work with information stored in short-term memory. *Kids use working memory to learn and follow directions. Working-memory boosters can be built into your child’s daily life.
*Does your child have a hard time keeping one bit of information in mind while he’s doing something else? For example, if he’s helping make spaghetti and the phone rings, does he forget he needs to go back and keep stirring the sauce? If he often has trouble with such tasks, he might have working memory issues. Working memory refers to the manipulation of information that short-term memory stores. (In the past, the term “working memory” was used interchangeably with the term “short-term memory.”) It’s a skill kids use to learn. It’s needed for tasks like following multi-step directions or solving a math problem in your head. You can help your child improve this executive function by building some working memory boosters into his daily life. These activities can be found on the following website:

“One Pill Kills” is set up across the state to educate Texans on how to prevent, recognize, and reverse fentanyl poisonings. Students and families need to know that other drugs may contain a deadly level of fentanyl. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. It is almost impossible to tell if another drug is laced with fentanyl unless tested with a fentanyl testing strip. Parents, please see the fliers attached that gives information about fentanyl and it’s affects.
