Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Stacey Flashback: Aliyah Pettyjohn

By: Adisyn Piper, sophomore

Aliyah attended Stacey for all four years of high school, graduating in 2013. She played basketball, was on Student Council, and was the editor of the yearbook. She went on to get her bachelors degree from Texas A&M-Corpus and her masters degree from Texas A&M.

When did you go to Stacey?
2009-2013

What are some of your favorite memories of going to school here?
I enjoyed my time doing various extracurricular activities. Yearbook planning, basketball, and student council were my favorites to participate in.

Where did you go to college and what was your major?
I went to Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi for undergrad and majored in Health Sciences. For graduate school, I went to Texas A&M University and majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration.

Where do you live currently?
Mérida, Mexico

What is your job?
User Experience Specialist - Research Operations

Do you have siblings?
I have three sisters. My youngest sister, Maya Pettyjohn, attended Stacey for high school too.

Do you have any pets?
No pets :). Sadly, I recently learned that I am allergic to cats.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Bali, Indonesia

Do you have any advice to current Stacey seniors?
You have no limits on what you can do so try to surprise yourself. Go be great!

Thank you Aliyah!

Where are you now Samuel Harasimowicz?

By: Anna Williams, sophomore

Sam attended Stacey from 2013 to 2015. He went on to graduate from Syracuse University. These days he can be seen on KVIA-TV, the ABC affiliate in El Paso, where he is a reporter, weekend anchor and news producer.

When did you go to Stacey?
I went to Stacey from 2013-2015 for my freshman and sophomore years of High School.

Were you in any clubs or sports?
I was in theatre/drama club and did two shows my sophomore year, The Anatomy of Grey and Hamlet. I was also on the CyberPatriot team.

Any advice for Seniors at Stacey?
Advice I give to any seniors, is to take big risks and whatever your passion is, don’t think you can’t achieve it. Whether that means going to college or not, do what you feel you need to do to live your dreams. Also, learning what you don’t like is just as important as learning what you like.

Where are you living now?
I currently live in El Paso, TX

What is your current job?
I work at KVIA-TV, the local ABC affiliate station in El Paso. I am a reporter, producer and weekend morning anchor here.

What do you think are the cons of going to a small school?
The biggest con I would say is sometimes it felt limited by the resources and smaller amount of staff/students for extracurriculars.

What are the pros of going to a small school?
Pros are that it was such a tight knit close community. Everyone knew everyone and it was an incredible way to make friends. Also, the familiarity of everyone being a military kid just made it easy for all of us to relate and support one another.

What do you miss most about high school?
I miss the structure, being an adult can be weird because any and all decisions are yours to make.

Did you change your career from high school to college?
I knew I wanted to entertain and tell stories from a young age. I pursued Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Syracuse University which helped me achieve that and get on the right path.

What things have changed, or stayed the same since you came to Stacey?
Biggest change was I never thought I’d end up back in Texas but I moved to El Paso straight of our college because it was an incredible opportunity to work on the news in such an intriguing and complex market!

Thank you, SAM!

Oreo Cookies

It is hard to believe, but the Oreo cookie was first introduced in 1912 as the Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie.  It is still a mystery how it got its name: one rumor is that it comes from the French word for gold, or because its first package was gold colored.

The breakdown of an Oreo cookie is 71 percent cookie and 29 percent creme filling.  More than 20 MILLION Oreo cookies are eaten every day.  If you could assemble all the Oreo cookies ever made, they could circle the equator 381 times and if stacked up, they could reach the moon five times over.

From 1912 to today, the Oreo Sandwich Cookie is still a favorite!!

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ’s

Once identified as GT will my child have to retest every year?

No. Students receive service as long as they are experience. success

My child did not qualify for GT service. When can they test again?

In most cases, your child will need to wait one calendar year before testing again. Please contact the GT facilitator in the district.

My child tested for GT but we have not received any information.

Please contact your GT facilitator for the district.

I understand students are clustered in general education classrooms.

What is the advantage?

GT identification is designed to address the educational needs for the gifted learner.

The teacher must have 30 hours of GT training.

The teacher is aware of the GT identification and can address the unique needs of gifted learners in that class.

GT students are part of the learning community that can help meet the social/emotional and intellectual needs.

A cluster of GT students in a class can create a unique dynamic in the classroom that is evidenced by the dialogue and the depth of the conversation in the class.

Is GT more work?

GT students should not receive assignments “in addition to” the standard assignment but may receive assignments “in lieu of” the standard assignments. Replacement assignments are typically more open ended and flexible in the way students demonstrate their learning.
