Lackland ISD Shares Survey Results

Parents Speak

Thank you for taking advantage of the opportunity to share your voice as members of the Lackland ISD learning organization by participating in the Fall 2019 survey opportunities.  The links below will give you access to reports.  These reports will share results and comparison data for survey results from Spring 2017 – Fall 2019.

Lackland ISD parents from both the elementary and secondary campuses have the opportunity to participate in a family survey.  The survey solicits feedback related to family-school relationships.  This survey measures barriers to engagement, family engagement, school climate, and school fit.  You are encouraged to review the results of family survey and engage with your child’s teachers and campus personnel to support us in improvement efforts.

   Family Survey Spring 17' - Fall 19'

In addition to the survey opportunities, parents were asked to provide specific feedback regarding two things our schools do well and two things we could do to improve.  Accolades shared were related to an understanding staff, student safety, and teacher’s dedication to the students. Communication and the playground are areas where growth is a welcomed opportunity.   To improve communication to parents many teachers are utilizing various apps to communicate information. Additionally, there are newsletters sent home from teachers, monthly calendars sent via email and the e-news.  Furthermore, because of your input we’ve be able to develop a monthly series of Let’s Talk events tailored to the needs of your families.    Campus and district teams are currently reviewing data and developing plans to inform learning organization priorities towards continuous improvement.  Our goal is to provide periodic updates regarding actions taken.

We share this information with you to enlist your continued engagement with the survey and our efforts towards continuous improvement.  Please continue to share your needs and desires through the surveys; as you can see your voice is making a difference.

Lackland ISD Shares Survey Results

Thank you for taking advantage of the opportunity to share your voice as members of the Lackland ISD learning organization by participating in the Fall 2019 survey opportunities.  The links below will give you access to reports.  These reports will share results and comparison data for survey results from Spring 2017 – Fall 2019.

Lackland ISD students in third through twelfth grade have the opportunity to participate in two surveys.  One survey solicits feedback related to campus climate and culture.  This survey measures school belonging, school climate, school engagement, school safety, and school teacher-student

relationships.  The other survey is related to student social and emotional learning competencies.  This survey is comprised of questions related to the student’s self-assessment of classroom effort, grit, growth mindset, and self-efficacy.  You are encouraged to review the results of student surveys and engage with your child’s teachers and campus personnel to support us in

improvement efforts.

3rd - 5th                      Student Survey Spring 17' - Fall 19'

6th – 12th                    Student Survey Spring 17' - Fall 19'

In addition to the survey opportunities, students were asked to provide specific feedback regarding two things our schools do well and two things we could do to improve.  Accolades shared were related to peer to peer support, open gym, and lunch. While communication is still an area of growth students have benefited from the addition of a designated Social-Emotional Support coordinator. The campus and district also addressed student concerns by rallying for and adding another Military Family Life Counselor.  With the addition of these two positions, students are enjoying group discussions where they are able to provide and receive valuable feedback. The work is not yet complete therefore the district and campus teams are currently reviewing data and refining plans to inform learning organization priorities towards continuous improvement.  Our goal is to provide periodic updates regarding actions taken.

We share this information with you to enlist your continued engagement with the survey and our efforts towards continuous improvement.  Please check back next week to see the results of the family surveys.  We aim to invest more time and effort in areas that will positively impact our ability to fulfill our vision, mission, and beliefs as your school district.

In addition to the survey opportunities, teachers and staff were asked to provide specific feedback regarding two things our schools do well and two things we could do to improve.  Accolades shared were related to autonomy in the classroom and social opportunities for staff. Consistent communication is the area where growth is a welcomed opportunity.   While communication is happening, district and campus teams will begin conversations to determine the mechanism(s) that would support improved communication for all.  Our goal is to provide periodic updates regarding actions taken towards continuous improvement.

We share this information with you to enlist your continued engagement with the survey and our efforts towards excellence.  Please check back in subsequent weeks to see additional results.  We aim to invest more time and effort in areas that will positively impact our ability to fulfill our vision, mission, and beliefs as your school district.

These past few weeks, Stacey’s FCCLA and S2S programs have teamed up together to make valentines cards for soldiers overseas! The cards were sent to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and the whole 160 soldiers at the medical facility received specially handmade cards from our students. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day this past week, we honor our troops and the strength it takes them to be away from their families. Thank you to all the students who participated and Happy Valentines Day!

Stacey Profile: Ms. Cathy Cotnam

By: Charla Gloria, senior

Image

You may have seen the nicest, friendliest, and truly compassionate lady in your life walking around saying hi to you and asking how you are. That “nice lady” has a name! Ms. Cotnam is an Academic Support Teacher at Stacey High School and I interviewed her to find out exactly what drives her. In life, most people are normal. Normal meaning complacent, happy... normal meaning being any variation of a friendly neighbor.

In life, there’s more than people. There’s natural and man-made disasters, sad news stories, political struggles, toils of war… It’s easy to be discouraged and to have faltered faith in humanity. However, there are still those brilliant and pure souls. Interviewing Ms. Cotnam was a blessing and a new experience. It was a refreshing reminder that there is still a lot of good in this world and that there are a lot of different perspectives on life.

What is your outlook on life? Or a life motto?

Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” These are words that I try to live by each day.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Giving students the help they need to succeed and working with the teachers that enjoy helping students.
What do you think made you want to be an Academic Support Teacher?

After 13 years of teaching Biology in the general education classroom and working with students that struggled with the content, I really wanted to focus on these students and encourage all students to have the confidence they need to be effective learners.
If you were to write a book, what do you think it would be about?

It would include something about giving mercy,  forgiveness, and compassion being the greatest gifts one human can give to another and taking responsibility for your own choices.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

The Dynamic Encourager! No one would be discouraged or torn down by my words or actions!
What’s your passion?

My relationships with my precious grandchildren, and party planning, especially for them.
What’s something that you would want to do in life, or are there any places you would like to visit?

I would love to go on a cruise along the Alaskan coastline.
What’s the most memorable memory you’ve had while working or the most memorable student.

When I turned 50, my daughter had the high school mariachis come into my Biology classroom and sing “Las Mañanitas”… I cried.
Are you superstitious?

No. My beliefs include the understanding that there is order and a purpose for the things we experience and it is not controlled by “unknown forces”.
Is there something that you would like me to ask/know that I haven’t?

My life has been richly blessed by being a mother to my 3 children and making other people’s children feel safe and cared for in my work as a teacher. I am grateful God loves us so completely.

Meet Sarah Gray: A Student’s Perspective

By: Deyana Clark, senior

Image

What is a teacher? A teacher is someone who helps students to acquire knowledge competence or virtue. If I were to be asked to say someone who resembles a teacher to me, it would be Ms. Sarah Gray. Ms. Gray is someone who I have gotten the chance to know over these past two years at Stacey. Ms. Gray is a remarkable person and an amazing teacher. She not only advances our understanding of English but also our understanding about life itself. When I was given the task to interview Ms. Gray, I was thrilled to learn more about who she is as a person and not just a teacher. Ms. Gray has been teaching for 11 years now and quite frankly it is her second career.

Ms. Gray attended art school at the University of Hartford before falling into a career in IT. She then went on to attend the University of the Incarnate Word at the age of 40 where she graduated with a degree in English and minors in Secondary Education and Native American Studies. Lastly, she attended graduate school at the University of Rhode Island where the bulk of her work was in ESL. Teaching was not something she has always wanted to do,  even though she has done versions of it in IT via training. Ms. Gray says she's a bit of a "compulsive communicator" and extremely curious, so when deciding to go back to school, she had in mind to go back to art school and become an art teacher. But, in the end, she decided that English was her path to follow because she is a very voracious reader and loves to write.

If Ms. Gray was not teaching, she would be either dealing with some creative art or dabbling in the food industry. After all the serious questions, we were able to dive into more fun and personal questions. Ms. Gray says that traveling is a "great equalizer" so when I asked her what her dream vacation spot is, she couldn't just come up with one! She would love to explore Africa, Peru, and Scandinavian countries as well. Her favorite sport is baseball and she reps the Boston Red Sox... so if you want to pass her class, I wouldn't mention the Yankees! Ms. Gray happens to have many hobbies but sadly can never find the time to do them. Though with her busy schedule, she manages to cook and make jewelry. When the day comes for Ms. Gray to retire (which is going to be the saddest day ever) she wants to pick up painting, learn to play the guitar, and just  indulge in all the curiosity her mind has. Getting to know more about the wonderful Ms. Gray is always a delight and will never get old. If you have the chance to meet Ms. Gray, cherish the moment for her soul is pure and she's full of light.
