Lackland ISD Adopts New Vision, Mission and Beliefs

The Lackland ISD’s Strategic Planning Committee engaged tirelessly in processes to recommend a new Vision, Mission, and Beliefs to support our work going forward.  Dr. Brennan from Educational Service Center Region 13 facilitated the work to ensure input from our stakeholders (teachers, parents, community members, and members of the Board of Trustees).  The Lackland ISD Board of Trustees adopted the Vision, Mission, and Beliefs during the September 27, 2022, meeting.

They are as follows:

District Vision

Lackland ISD ignites a passion for life-long learning and empowers excellence.

District Mission

Lackland ISD provides a safe and nurturing environment where we recognize the value of individuals and collaborate to develop their unique abilities.  We engage students through innovative experiences to spark creativity and empower students to learn, grow, and excel.

Our Beliefs

WE BELIEVE

*In providing equitable educational opportunities to meet the unique needs of our students.

*In engaging students, staff, families, and the community in a collaborative environment of mutual respect.

*In maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for students and staff.

Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Stacey Robotics Kickoff

By: Cadence Bramlett, freshman

The Stacey robotics teams are up and running for the 2022-2023 school year, beginning with FTC. It stands for: First Tech Challenge. It’s a robotics competition (or co-opetition) that gives students tasks to complete with a robot they build. It’s making a robot after being given the prompt of the game. Saturday, September 10 marked the start of a new season. On Saturday all of Stacey’s FTC teams (team: Marvel Us, Bots in Blue, and RoboEagles) went to the 2022-23 kickoff. The kickoff introduced the game, had multiple classes to teach new skills, and let people scope out competition. The event was  held at Brandeis High School. A large thing in FTC is “Co-Opetition”, this basically means helping out and be kind to other teams even if they are competitors. Another big thing in FTC robotics is “gracious professionalism” this is a way of doing things that encourages others, being respectful, and emphasizes the value of others.

Overall it seems like a great start to a new season.

8 Questions with Mrs. Joseph

By: Natalie Gamboa, junior

Mrs. Domini Joseph is returning to Stacey this year. She actually use to be a student at Stacey; now she teaches Chemistry and Physics.

1) What is something different you notice about Stacey when you came back?

For the most part, Stacey looks the same. However, there are a lot of new staff members, and the

dress code is a lot more relaxed.

2)Where are you from? (Places you lived)

I was born in Hawaii, and have lived in Japan, California, Nevada and Texas.

3) What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

My greatest professional accomplishment is achieving a nursing degree while I pursued it during my

teaching career and becoming a registered nurse. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice of personal

time to achieve it, but I am proud of myself for doing it.

4)What is your favorite sport?

That’s a very hard question. I love watching basketball, volleyball, and track. However, I think I enjoy

playing and coaching volleyball the most.

5)What do you enjoy about teaching?

The best part about teaching is watching students develop a love or respect for the course that they

are in. They may struggle at first but then are proud of themselves for what they have achieved.

6)What is a quote you live by?

Truthfully, I am terrible at remembering quotes. However, when I was pursuing my teaching degree,

one of professors told our cohort that “students may not remember what you taught them in class but

they will always remember how you made them feel”. I always keep this in mind.

7)What do you think is a good movie students should watch?

There are so many good movies, but recently I saw Top Gun: Maverick. That’s a great movie to watch,

especially my physics students.

8)What or Who inspired you to be a teacher?

I wanted to become a teacher the moment I started struggling in college. A teacher makes such a

huge impact on how well a student learns in class. I made it a point to seek a career that would build

skills and confidence in students for college or future careers.

THANK You Mrs. Joseph!

Stacey Profile: Mrs. Torre

By: Adisyn Piper, sophomore

Mrs. Torre is an amazing, wonderful teacher that works hard at her job every day and doesn’t give up. She has been a teacher in the district since 08/20/2007. She started out at Lackland Elementary School teaching 6th graders. When they moved 6th grade to the Junior High, she followed along with them.

She served a total of 20 years in the USAF Air Guard here at Lackland AFB and she also served in the US Army Guard; she deployed to Kuwait and Iraq from 2003-2005. She comes from a military family. She loves to teach Social Studies, loves to touch the future, and loves to teach and sharing information, thoughts, and ideas with her students.

Mrs. Torre has two rescue dogs at home. They are her life: Dexter and Darby. She can’t imagine her life without them.

If she could do any job besides teaching, she would like to work at HEB as a support team member. Mrs. Torres biggest fear is Wolf spiders. San Antonio is home base for Mrs. Torre. Her proudest accomplishment is her son being a former Marine. Her son was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq the same time she was, but she did not get to see him. He was such a busy person but know he is home safe and sound. If Mrs. Torre won the lottery, she would make sure our abandoned and neglected animals are placed in good homes, with lots of love, snacks and, toys.

THANK You Mrs. Torre!

Middle Ages: Chivalry, Heraldry, and Tournaments

The ideal knight was brave in battle, loyal to his leadership, and protected women, The rules of behavior were known as "chivalry".

Fully-armed knights displayed a symbolic image on their shields or on their surcoat in order to be recognized in battle.

During the 1100s, each design or "coat of arms" became the property of a particular family, a system known as "heraldry".  Knights fought mock battles called "jousts" in tournaments.  They used blunted weapons and  wore special armor.  Each joust started with two knights charging each other with lances.

...And now you know the rest of the story about bravery and determination!!!

Good Information

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a common condition that makes it hard to work with language. Some experts believe that between 5 and 10 percent of people have it. Others say as many as 17 percent of people show signs of reading challenges.

People don't outgrow dyslexia, but there are teaching approaches and strategies that can help them improve their reading skills and manage dyslexia challenges. People of any age can be tested for dyslexia, although the tests are different for adults than for kids.

Dyslexia is a learning disability associated with reading.  Dyslexic people have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, but these challenges aren’t related to intelligence.
