Our Above & Beyond committee met on December 6, 2023 and reviewed the nominations. All nominees have been approved and recommended by their principals/supervisors.

Each Above & Beyond award recipient was recognized and honored during the school board meeting on December 12, 2023. They received a “Certificate of Achievement”, a $200.00 stipend, and a reserved parking space. Additionally, their names will be displayed on the Marquee and the Lackland ISD web site along with an article published in the weekly e-newsletter.

Para-Professional – Brianne Jet serves as our Junior-Senior High School Registrar.  Brianne has worked at Lackland ISD for 7 years and during this time she has done a remarkable job helping parents and students with the registration process and the many other student support services she is responsible for.  She is also always willing to help the elementary campus and district office when they need help.  Additionally, Brianne is always willing to go help teachers in the classroom with any Ascender issues they may be experiencing.  According to her supervisor, Brianne always makes staff, students and parents feel welcome with “her genuine smile and cheerful personality”.  Brianne routinely receives compliments from parents for her great customer service and helpfulness.   We are proud to recognize Brianne Jet as one of our Fall 2023 Above & Beyond award winners.

Auxiliary – Tommy Estrada serves as the Supervisor in our Custodial Department. Tommy does an outstanding job making sure that both our campuses and district administrative spaces are carefully cleaned, sanitized, and well-maintained.  In addition to his everyday responsibilities, Tommy goes above and beyond in helping coordinate custodial support for afterschool events such as the annual fall festival, school dances, after school meetings, and numerous other school events.  Tommy is always helpful to teachers and staff and will help solve a problem, even when it doesn’t fall under his long list of responsibilities. Tommy can always be counted on to help when needed with a great attitude and big smile.  We are proud to recognize Tommy Estrada as one of our Fall 2023 Above & Beyond award winners.

Professional – Alejandra Parham serves as one of our special education teachers at Stacey Junior-Senior High School.  Alejandra is a caring and highly talented teacher that consistently goes above and beyond in ensuring the success and well-being of her students with special needs.  Mrs. Parham does a great job ensuring her students IEPs are being met and keeping parents involved in their children’s education.  According to one of her student’s parent: Mrs. Parham made the transition for her son super easy when they moved here.  “She’s always been super thorough and has helped him with whatever he needed to ensure he stayed where he needed to be.  Any questions, where always answered and she made my son more confident in his education.  She always goes the extra mile.  We are proud to recognize Alejandra Parham as one of our Fall 2023 Above & Beyond award winners.

Professional – Domini Joseph serves as one of our teachers at Stacey Junior-Senior High School.  Domini is an amazing teacher, always going above and beyond her call to support students.  Utilizing her knowledge as an RN, Domini has taken on the challenge of a new program that will propel our students into the world of medicine.  Although it is a struggle, she continues to bring the rigor expected from the field to the kids and teaches them in a way they can understand, while upholding the highest expectations.  She spends time tutoring students to success in her content area and in other subjects. Domini also runs HOSA, which empowers these young minds to engage in becoming global leaders, providing them opportunities to intern in the field.  Domini also runs the elementary STEM club. We are proud to recognize Domini Joseph as one of our Fall 2023 Above & Beyond award winners.

Stacey Flashback: Brittany Dybus

By: Gabby DeLambo, junior

Brittany Dybus went to Stacey over ten years ago, graduating in 2011! She was the editor of the yearbook for two years and is now a professional photographer in Oklahoma (her website: https://www.brittanydybusphotography.com/).

When and how long did you go to Stacey?

The short answer is that I actually started at Fairview elementary in 6th grade, and then attended Stacey Jr./Sr/ high until my senior year - so about 7 years. My family was stationed briefly in Japan for a few months during my junior year (I think), but we came back to Texas early due to my Dad’s health. I also moved to Oklahoma and attended a different school for the last few months of my senior year - but I made sure that I made the arrangements to come back to Texas and walk the stage with my friends at Stacey.

What are some of your favorite memories at Stacey?

Going on art field trips like the McNay and the Chalk in Up festival. The student council popsicle stand during the hot days was always nice. Pouring rain over the covered areas of the school so it looked like we were all walking through one big waterfall tunnel. I was also that kid who always got really excited for spirit week festivities. School was a place I genuinely enjoyed largely in part to teachers who worked there - They definitely had a lasting impact. I really enjoyed the friendly banter and even the serious conversations I had with the teachers there. A specific moment I was proud of was one of the awards ceremonies, where I was recognized as a top English Lit student and Mr. Poludniak made the comment that I was “the one student who [he] knew for sure not only read, but actually enjoyed the reading assignment” - it was presented in a way that was funny but my dad had attended the ceremony that night and was really proud of that comment. I still have the certificate I was given.

Were you in any clubs or sports?

I preferred more of the creative classes - I hated and struggled in math (except with Mrs Stiller) but I tried a bit of everything creative. I was an AP art student my senior year, and an AP English student, as I mentioned. I did theater for a bit, but I struggled with being anxious while performing. I was in journalism first, and then that sort of became Yearbook. I loved walking around with the camera and capturing candid shots most - a few people called me “Miss Press” haha. I was also really proud of being Editor in Chief my senior year. The photoshop certification (CS6) actually helped me out a lot when I went to college, and also helped when I started my first job as a photographer/sales associate. I did the teachers aid program at one point with Mrs. Duron - I became an aid for the elementary art teachers - That was one of my favorite classes as I was able to create lesson plans for kids, help them with their art projects, and help the teachers with organizing and such. My best friend at the time, Anneliese, worked with me during that class too and it was a blast to swap stories about the funny things the kids would do, or occasionally banter with the art teachers haha. Lastly, I was really active in the Art Club through the duration of my Jr. high, and high school experience. Art was HUGE for me then, and is still a big part of my life today. As I mentioned the art field trips were some of my favorite memories at Stacey - that and the classes with Mr. Millett really provided a nice peaceful place to escape and express myself. He was a wonderful and very kind instructor.

What do you think was different about going to a small school?

I spent the last couple months of my senior year in a much larger school in Oklahoma - SO many people. As an introvert, It was definitely a bit of a shock by comparison, and I appreciated the atmosphere at Stacey even more because of that experience. It was funny to me to be one of 3 students named Brittany at Stacey at one point, especially when my graduating class was

only 32 students. I do think rumors were more of a big deal because the school was small - but I don't think I worried about that much personally. It definitely also make Stacey seem less “clique-y” than a big school because we were all in each other's classes anyway. So while you did tend to have a group of more sporty people and a group that maybe seemed more nerdy or

goth, we all interacted with each too frequently to have the vast amount of separation or hostility you see in larger schools. I also think the teachers at Stacey likely had more space in their day to really learn about their students, and it resulted in better relationships with them - I'm very grateful for that experience as I definitely needed it during that time in my life.

What advice would you give to members of the graduating class?

First of all, in my experience, the staff at Stacey really cares about you - so take them seriously. If you have a serious problem or you are struggling in school or home or life in general, whatever - you can trust them to help you when you need it. Secondly - All humans experience stress and hardship. It’s important to have understanding and show kindness to others and also to yourself. This takes practice and patience sometimes, but that work has had a huge impact throughout my life. Empathy, compassion, and self-awareness is just as important as talent, skill, hard work as in adult life. I would also say that no matter how planned out you think your life is, change is inevitable and necessary for your growth. I left Stacey thinking I knew exactly what I wanted the next 5 years to look like and I have changed directions many times since - that is completely normal. A general sense of focus is important of course - but If something doesn't feel right, or you're called to try something else and you have the means to do that - you always have the option to creatively rethink your plan while making logical adjustments. You actually should do that, and often until you are sure you are going the right way.

What do you do in your free time?

Photography of course! I also really enjoy my plants and nature in general - so I hike and camp pretty frequently. I play d&d or play boardgames/videogames with a group of friends regularly, and try to go to local festivals, museums, or events frequently. I also have a corgi named Sisko who I take on my adventures wherever I can. I still write and create art whenever I have time.

We are looking at your website - how long have you done photography?

I have enjoyed photography pretty much my entire life! I used my phone a lot when I was younger, highschool was also a great intro to using a DSLR. I bought my first Canon Rebel (a T6i) for my photography class in community college. My first job was at a retail portrait studio where I learned portrait posing and sales. I then took some extra business and creative classes from a few photographers that I have looked up to and began working as a professional freelancer in 2018. My business has had its ups and downs with the pandemic and rising costs, but I am still bringing in additional income with my skill and thoroughly enjoy the work I do. I am also a certified project manager, and am hoping to combine those skills, rebrand my business, and build a team to both photograph and coordinate elopement style weddings full time one

day!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would not change a thing about my time there, except maybe to have been a bit more focused or to have asked for a little more help when I needed it. As I have mentioned a few times throughout this process - The staff and culture at Stacey had a huge impact on my life that was crucial for me during those years, which were particularly difficult outside of school. Thank you for the opportunity to introspectively reflect on my time at Stacey and I truly hope all the students there now look back in 12 years with just as much fondness of for these years as I do now.

Hour of Code at Lackland Elementary

Each year our kids brush up on their coding skills during National Computer Science Education Week by participating in the Hour of Code along with students from all around the world. Students use critical thinking and build problem solving skills by solving increasingly more challenging puzzles, and have a lot of fun at the same time. I'm always amazed at how quickly they pick it up, and we love to watch them succeed. You can give it a try yourself at Code.org. Happy Coding!

”Siraya is always one of the first students to get ready, to show me that she’s paying attention and focused. She’s the sweetest young lady, but also one of the most respectful and responsible students in the classroom.”

Jaxon Armstrong- 4th

“Jaxon is a kind and encouraging classmate to his peers.  He makes sure that everyone is taken care without being asked and he loves to learn.  He demonstrates Responsibility by following directions even when no one is watching setting the example for his classmates.  He is responsible for the safety bag for his classroom and helps make sure the room is cleaned up and materials put away after each lesson. He is a delightful student and is a joy to have in class.”

Students and families need to know that other drugs may contain a deadly level of fentanyl. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. It is almost impossible to tell if another drug is laced with fentanyl unless tested with a fentanyl testing strip. Parents, please see the fliers attached that gives information about fentanyl and it’s affects.
