Col. Burnie Roper, Retires from 35 years of Military Service

Dr. Burnie L. Roper is truly a servant and servant-leader.  His service in these capacities is evident in his consecutive career engagement in public schools and the military.  Many are aware that Dr. Roper began his career in education in 1991 as a mathematics teacher.  His exemplary service resulted in professional growth opportunities that resulted in roles as an assistant principal, principal and now district superintendent.  He has spent fifteen of his twenty -eight years of service in public education at Lackland Independent School District.  He served five years as the principal of Stacey Jr./Sr. High School and ten years in his current role as Superintendent.  However, what may be of surprise to most is that Dr. Roper has been just as dedicated to supporting our nation’s safety and security through his service in the Army.  On Saturday, December 7, 2019, Col. Burnie Roper will retire and be recognized for 35 years of military service.  In this assignment, Col. Roper was responsible for a Combat Sustainment Battalion consisting of five subordinate commands with a total authorized strength of 600 soldiers.  Lackland ISD students and staff, led by our JROTC, celebrated Col. Roper’s retirement with a sendoff to his final weekend of service.  We are truly proud of the leadership and commitment to our district and country that Dr. Roper exemplifies daily.

We would like to inform you that your child will be pre-assessed for TX AIM on Tuesday, December _10th____, 2019 from 3pm-5pm.  Texas Academic Innovation and Mentoring Program (TX AIM) is a skills gap remediation program that partners Boys & Girls Clubs and Sylvan Learning to provide Ace it! To your child.  Ace it! students participate in 30 hours of academic intervention in Reading or Math delivered to your child at the Boys & Girls Club.  If you were to purchase the program directly at a Sylvan Learning Center it would cost you more than $1500.00!!  This is a HUGE benefit to our Club members who receive these FREE services.

If your child is chosen for this FREE opportunity, we will inform you by the end of the week so that you can attend a Parent Orientation.

MISSION CREEK ACADEMY CAMP

by: John (J.J.) Hollister 5th grade

7 Lackland Elementary students and 16 Fort Sam Elementary students went to Mission Creek Academy for an overnight trip in Medina City, TX. At this camp, we learned about the 7-character traits of a leader but we focused on only 3 traits; cooperation, courage, and responsibility.  We applied the 3 traits during activities. Some activities included: the “pool noodle incident” which required cooperation, kayaking required courage, “high ropes course” required courage, and “toilet paper tornado” requires responsibility. I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to go. I had a blast and I miss it.
