Volunteer and Parent Engagement Opportunities

Lackland ISD strongly desires parent participation in decision-making committees.  You have an opportunity to share your voice and help us actualize our vision as The Premier leader in educational excellence.  As you engage as a parent, we also invite your participation in campus and district-level committees.  Below are the descriptions for these committees for your consideration.  Each committee’s point of contact is listed with the committee description if you have additional questions.

Please read each description and let us know if you are interested in supporting the committee or learning more about it.

School Health Advisory Council

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program.  The council will address the continued implementation of a coordinated health program, including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, a healthy school environment, staff health promotion, and family/community involvement.  This committee must have more parent representation than district staff.  The SHAC meets at least four times during the school year.  Two meetings occur after-school, and two meetings occur during the school day.  Tentative meeting dates are October 5, December 7, February 8, and April 12.

Point of Contact:  Dr. Tonya Hyde, hyde.t@lacklandisd.net

District Education Improvement Council (DEIC)

The District Education Improvement Council (DEIC) is a district-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the District Improvement Plan.  This plan comprises the district’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety.  This committee is also designated to provide recommendations to Texas Education Agency waiver requests and other items of local governance to be addressed by a district-level committee before Board of Trustee approval. Meeting dates are September 26, October 24, February 27, and May 1.

Point of Contact:  Dr. Burnie Roper, roper.b@lacklandisd.net

Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC)

The Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC) is a campus-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the Campus Improvement Plan.  This plan comprises the campus’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety.

Points of Contact

Lackland Elementary School, Mrs. Terry Leija, Leija.t@lacklandisd.net  / Stacey Jr./Sr High School, Mr. Hunter Shelby, Shelby.h@lacklandisd.net

District Calendar Committee

The District Calendar Committee assists the district in the development of the school calendar.  Lackland ISD’s District Calendar Committee will develop the calendar for the 2024-2025 school year for board approval. The committee also makes any necessary recommendations for the previously board-approved 2023-2024 school calendar based on new information.  The District Calendar Committee meets after school during the spring semester.  Following the initial meeting to design the calendar, the committee may have additional meetings to consider stakeholder feedback and finalize the calendar for the District Education Improvement Council and the Board of Trustees.

Strategic Planning Committee

Lackland ISD is bringing key community members together to collaborate on creating a five-year strategic plan designed to improve our district.  The strategic planning process is intense. Parent engagement will be requested initially on September 21st or 22nd and September 28 or 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with follow-up meetings on October 11, 18, and/or 27th, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and additional meetings as needed.  The role of committee members is to help set the direction for the district’s plan.

Point of Contact:  Dr. Burnie Roper, roper.b@lacklandisd.net

PTSO

Lackland ISD PTSO is a Parent Teacher Student Organization.

PTSO has one board who serves both the Elementary school as well as Stacey Jr/Sr High. We use all of the funds we raise to help out around the schools with many fun events as well as helping the teachers out in their classrooms.

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents.  To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!

ParentSquare is a communication platform.  Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app

*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events

*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items

*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app.  The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store.  If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well.  ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal.  Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Superintendent’s Welcome Back Message

Dear Lackland Parents, Students and Community Members,

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2022-2023 school year! We are excited about the new school year and look forward to great and wonderful things happenings as we educate our awesome military-connected students. We hope that you will take the time to be involved with our District and support our amazing students. I want to inform you about three new initiatives/programs that will be occurring this school year.

The first initiative is the development of a new strategic plan for our District.  We will be working with our teachers, students, parents, and community members to collaborate on creating a five-year plan designed to improve our District. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact the Superintendent’s Office at 210-357-5002 or your child’s Principal.

Our second initiative will involve hosting a quarterly town hall for parent and community members to provide input and express any concerns about any of our school programs. These meetings will occur in the Lackland ISD Auditorium from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  and will be held on: October 12, 2022, January 18, 2023, and April 5, 2023.

Our third initiative is the establishment of a Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. The purpose of this council is to allow student representatives to provide feedback and input to the Superintendent regarding District and campus instructional programs, school activities, and school climate. The council will be made up of both elementary and secondary students. Student representatives from the elementary school will come from grades 3-5 (one each) and grades 6-12 (one each) at the secondary school. Campus Principals will select student representatives for the Council. Students will meet on designated dates with the Superintendent from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Students will be provided lunch during the meeting and will be responsible for making up any missed classwork. Selected students must have parental permission to participate. We look forward to working with these young people to make our District better.

Wishing everyone a great school year!

Dr. Burnie L. Roper

Stacey Happenings

The varsity girls volleyball team competed in the Center Point tournament last Thursday and Saturday. The Lady Eagles went undefeated in pool play beating Center Point, Our Lady of the Hills and KIPP academy on their way to claiming the #1 seed for pool A. In the semifinal match, our ladies were able to outlast a scrappy team from Charlotte. The team came up short in the championship match but still showed growth in the loss. What a great accomplishment for our Stacey Lady Eagles. Alayna Factuar was selected as all-tournament player.

Way to go Eagles!

This past Saturday, the Eagles Cross Country team traveled to Kenedy to compete. The Lady Eagles, led by 1st place finisher Angelina Lione, placed 4th overall. Angelina finished her race in 13:41.

The Eagles, led by 2nd place finisher Sal Lione, 6th place finisher Zach Born and 7th place finisher Dante Lione, placed 2nd overall. Sal finished his race in 18:02.

This was a very strong start for the Cross Country season for both teams. Congratulations and good luck on the rest of the season.

This little guy was spotted outside of Coach Mike Flores’ window in the Stacey counseling dept during the first week of school. Looks like he just finished one of coach’s workouts.

Elementary Happenings

In Mrs. Gaskin's class the kids put their friendship puzzle together. Each child designed their puzzle piece of what makes them a good friend, and the qualities that they look for in a friend. Their interest and hobbies. They then took their puzzle pieces to make a whole piece. They did great at teamwork.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

School Counselor Corner

August 2022

Welcome back to school from your school counselors, Ms. Dominguez and Mrs. Rodriguez!

We are very excited to be working with Lackland Elementary students, families, and staff. Mrs. Rodriguez will be working with students in Pre-K – 2nd grade and Ms. Dominguez will be working with students in 3rd- 5th grade. As the school counselors at Lackland Elementary School, we help all students with social/emotional development, self-management, social skills, maintaining friendships, and we also provide support during various transitions in a student's life (e.g., family change, deployment, moving, etc.). We will be providing these services through the delivery of classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and meeting with students on an individual basis.

We will meet with each classroom individually in all grades each month to provide guidance lessons which will be focusing on the specific needs of our school. Small group counseling will be offered to all students throughout the school year and is based on student need. We are also excited to share that we will be inviting parents and families to join us for “Coffee with the Counselors” during the school year, we will share more details on this later.

We look forward to meeting you and working with our students to have a successful school year. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions!
