Weller and Roshio at State UIL |
The Texas University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive program of academic competition in the nation. At the high school level, UIL offers over 30 different contests. This year, Stacey students competed in district at Falls City. Those that placed then travelled to the regional contest at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Two students advanced from regionals and proudly represented Stacey at the very competitive State 2A UIL Championships on the campus of UT Austin this week. Freshman Christian Roshio was the alt for Current Issues and Events while senior Perry Weller returned to the state meet for the 2nd consecutive year, competing in both Science and Computer Science. In Science, Perry won the silver in the Physics division, getting the 2nd highest score in the state. He also placed 12th in Computer Science. Congratulations to these two and all students and coaches that represented Stacey and Lackland ISD this past year in high school, jr high and elementary divisions of UIL.

I interviewed four Stacey 6th graders to talk about how they felt about this year and the transition they faced from being in 5th grade to becoming a 6th grader. Thanks to Atticus Dye, Jaxon Norris, Brayla Grooms, and Cassidy Crawford for answering my questions.

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas |
May 17, 1954: In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin.
In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that "separate but equal" accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her Black alternative and miles closer to her home. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up Linda’s cause, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka reached the Supreme Court. African American lawyer (and future Supreme Court justice) Thurgood Marshall led Brown’s legal team, and on May 17, 1954, the high court handed down its decision.
Our history is our story.
