Advocating for Principals, With Principals

Every year in October, the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) join forces to celebrate our nation’s principals for their tireless dedication to their students and the schools they serve.

This year, National Principals Month is shifting focus and using its platform to advocate on behalf of principals. These school leaders fight every day to give their students the best education and it’s time we advocate for them and with them.

Reprinted from principalsmonth.org

Here are some quotes from elementary students:

“I like that our principal makes sure we have recess.” (2nd grader)

“Every time I see our principal, she is smiling.” (2nd grader)

“She picks awesome teachers to work here.” (Kindergarten student)

“I like that our principal has a no-bullying policy and that she has locks on the doors to keep us safe.  I also like that she has PE in our schedules every day because at some schools they have it [PE] as a Specials class.” (3rd grader)

“Hmmmm.... there's a lot of things; I like that she investigates and responds to danger quickly.  And she helps us be prepared by practicing with drills.” (3rd grader)

“The principal chooses nice teachers to work here.” (Student)

Here are some quotes from our secondary students:

“ I like how you are a good principal.  I hope you have a good day” (Middle Schooler)

“Thank you, Mr. Shelby for helping all of our clubs and programs grow!” (Student)

“Thank you for showing leadership qualities all around the school” (Student)

“Mr. Shelby, thank you for your generous dedication to this school.  We hope you know that there are people out here that truly appreciate your work.” (Student)

“We love how you are really good at your job and keep on doing what you are doing.” (student)

Thank you!!!

Blue Up

by: Hailey Barentine

When October comes around each year, our initial thoughts are Halloween and Fall! But what many people do not know is that October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Each year, the first Monday in October is Blue-Up. From Elementary to High School, our students helped spread awareness by indulging in the act of wearing blue. There are four activities this month.

    The week of October 7th

Make friends and speak with someone you aren't familiar with.

    The week of October 14th

When seeing or hearing an act of injustice, stand up for them!

     The week of October 21st

See someone sitting alone? Invite them over! This week is all about inclusion.

.

      The week of October 28th

Don't be afraid to speak up and start a conversation with your fellow peers.

As the month goes on, keep in mind what it represents--celebrating and encouraging our differences! Try to implement these four simple activities into your daily routine.

Meet  Ms. Templeman!

By: Jacob Gamboa, Senior

Image

Among the several new additions to the Stacey Jr./Sr. High School staff this school year, Lisa Finker-Templeman is a prepared Eagle ready for what the year has in store. Ms. Templeman is an essential member of the Stacey family as she has filled a crucial science teaching position to instruct students through courses such as physics and chemistry. In addition, Ms. Templeman is no stranger to teaching as she recognizes this school year as her thirtieth year as a teacher. However, Ms. Templeman’s plans weren’t always to teach, especially at a school located on a military installation such as Stacey.

She was born in Pueblo, Colorado and grew up with two siblings and her parents. As much as she knows about the military comes from her father who was a retired navy member, one who had been active duty long before her time. Overall, she believes her childhood was very privileged and her father’s use of the GI Bill to earn two PhDs was what motivated her to take her studies to New Mexico State University. At New Mexico State, Ms. Templeman obtained a degree in horticulture as she had a passion for plant nurseries and food research. Little did Ms. Templeman know, a sudden change of events would lead her to receiving a teaching certification and finding a job in Robstown, Texas.

As the years have passed, Ms. Templeman now finds herself at Stacey where she appreciates the smaller classes and additional money for retirement. Furthermore, Ms. Templeman believes “success is when my students learn, not just science, but also important life skills.” Ms. Templeman’s dream is to visit Italy or Peru, and she would describe herself as multi-sided, someone who couldn’t be described in one word. Finally, Ms. Lisa Templeman successfully raised two successful daughters and she now resides at home with her enormous poodle named ‘Ebony’.

THANK YOU Ms. Templeman!

Senior Spotlight: Conner O’Malley

by: Sam Gagnon, Senior

Conner Seamus O’Malley is a senior who is involved in many things. Some of the most notable are CyberPatriots and Cross Country and he is a captain of both of these activities. CyberPatriot is a club that works with cybersecurity to understand how computers operate and defend themselves; while Cross Country is a rigorous sport that he does after school every day. The effects of Cross Country(XC) can be seen in his determination as he says, “you’re not gonna get anywhere unless you suffer through it,'' claiming XC teaches him perseverance that applies to multiple aspects of his life. Having done XC for the past 3 years as well as attending 3 different high schools, the sport provides an easy way to make new friends at the beginning of the school year and has taught him about personal fitness and how to be a leader of a large group. As a captain of the team, Conner learns how to lead a large group claiming that you have to be more impersonal to try and find an outcome that works for everyone. When the season comes to an end, he plans to train on his own to work towards track season as well as a half marathon in December.

As the captain of a smaller team, CyberPatriots is an easy way for him to express his hobbies and interests in school. He claims with a smaller group he learns “when to lead and when to follow”, and is able to take into account more of his teammate opinions on a problem. Competition is coming up and he is preparing by researching online and trying to study as best he can to score better as a team which incorporates learning more than just his specialty when it comes to computers to help collaborate and teach the members of his team. Even with all this going on, Conner still claims to not feel overworked and feels like his active involvement with the community benefits him greatly.

Life saving teacher Mrs. Kristy Archibald!

Image

Mrs. Leija and Mrs. Greeness,

I wanted to take a moment and tell you about yesterday around 1:40 p.m.

From the phone call from Mrs. Moralez, Tyrion was eating an apple for snack and possible bit his tongue or the inside of his mouth (that he does quite often). He must have inhaled as he was eating and began to choke on the apple. Kristy Archibald, his Kinder teacher, reacted immediately and used the Heimlich on him and the piece of apple came out.

 Now...

I don't know if you have an employee of the month award or anything like that, but the woman deserves something. She. Saved. My. Sons. Life.

Not only did she text me to let me know what happened right after they went to recess, but she not only checked on him later in the evening, but helped me with phone numbers to call to do a follow up with an UCC.

Seriously, I don't feel like my thank you is enough. I can get her donuts, a card, or gift card, but it won't be enough for her quick and decisive actions that helped my son.

I hope you take a moment and commend her for abilities. I can't even begin to tell you what an asset she is as a teacher.

Tyrion is great and had pizza last night (and ice cream this morning.)

Thank you for taking a moment to read this.

 A forever grateful parent,

 Christina Pfeiffer
