It’s the Month of the Military Child! On April 15, 2021, we’ll celebrate by turning purple! We are asking the entire community to purple up  for our military connected children and show our gratitude, support, and appreciation for their strength and sacrifices. We’d love to have you join us that morning to line our sidewalks, as we cheer on our children, as they arrive to school from 7:15-7:45 am. Please bring your signs, noise makers and don’t forget to Purple Up!!!!

Is your child learning from home, are you unable to join us in person?  We’ve not forgotten you and we want and need your participation too.  You can send a quick virtual shout out to your child or all children by recording a brief video and emailing it to Guyton.d@lacklandisd.net. Please keep the video under 20 seconds and submit to Guyton.d@lacklandisd.net no later than Wednesday, April 14,2021 @ Noon.  I look forward to seeing all of your amazing smiles!

The Lackland Education Foundation is up and running and we are excited about the possibilities that our Foundation will offer for our teachers and our students. Lackland ISD Celebrates the Month of the Military Child

Lackland ISD exists to serve the military child.  April is the Month of the Military Child.  It is a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide, emphasizing the experiences of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas. April 15 is "Purple up! For Military Kids", a day recognized in military-connected communities to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.  Purple indicates that all branches of the military are supported.  Air Force (blue), Army (green), Navy (blue), Marine (red), and Cost Guard (blue) all combine into a single color, purple.

Lackland ISD began its recognition of the 'Month of the Military Child' on April 1, 2021, prompting students to wear their pajamas as a reminder to follow their dreams. Each Thursday of the month will encourage activities for student participation.  Please watch for school messages to share how we will continue the celebration and recognition of military children.

Stacey Happenings

Giving up time to help others is a great sacrifice and something to be proud of. A way many students help others is through volunteering.
On March 30th a volunteer opportunity opened for all students to help assemble folders for foster kids leaving the CPS system. Olivia Charles planned and hosted the project and recruited eight students. There were a total of 175 folders to be assembled and with teamwork they created 168 folder in 45 minutes before running out of supplies. Child Protective Services is extremely grateful for all the volunteer workers and are always looking for more.

Thank to the volunteers who signed up to help:
Shannah Flores- 11th
Kylie Yarbrough- 8th
Parker Archibald- 11th
Terence Cummingham- 11th
Maria Orencia- 11th
Gabriell Gavin- 9th

Team Marvel✯✯us, Stacey Jr/Sr High School all-female robotics team, had a special visitor on Monday April 5, 2021. Major General Jeannie Leavitt stopped by and shared some words of encouragement and even drove the robot!

Maj Gen Leavitt became the first USAF female combat pilot in 1993. She amassed over 3000 total flight hours including over 300 combat flight hours over both Iraq and Afghanistan. She also was the inspiration for the backstory of the fictional character Carol Danvers also known as Captain Marvel in the 2019 movie.

Her message to the team was to have grit as they work towards their goals. While moving forward, we will make mistakes, but we must be persistent and not give up. And even though we are persistent, we must do so while being happy and kind to those around us.

Team members Cadence Bramlett (7th grade), Anna Williams (8th grade), and Sandra Williams (10th grade) presented Maj Gen Leavitt with a team shirt, mask and an award as a Woman of Inspiration. Afterwards, the team instructed Maj Gen Leavitt on how to drive the robot (which the General picked up on quickly.)

On April 7th, officers from the High School Student Council went to the DePelchin Foster Care Center to deliver school supplies collected during the Lackland ISD school supply drive that was hosted in March. The school supplies were delivered to the agency and will be distributed to children who have been placed in their foster homes.

HS Student Council also delivered dog toys and a monetary donation totaling $62.50 to the San Antonio Humane Society. The dog toys, made using old T-shirts, were part of a previous Student Council project in an effort to up-cycle old clothing and reduce waste.

Meet Mrs. Ryan!

by: Maria Orencia, junior

Where are you from?

I’m from Phoenix, Arizona,  the Valley of the Sun. I’m from a family of 7, 3 boys and 2 girls. Growing up there was always someone to play with.  I’m from a close-knit family that enjoyed cards or board games almost every night.  My dad built the house I grew up in, and I still visit every summer. I’m from the place with the most breathtaking sunsets, Gila monsters, and road runners. I’m from a location so hot we could fry an egg on the sidewalk and the street tar would bubble in the summer. In fact, 100 days of the year the temperature is 100 degrees or more. I’m from a generation that played outside until the streetlights came on, and recorded mixed tapes to listen to on our Walkman. I’m from a place and family that I loved and felt loved everyday.

What do you teach?

I currently teach early childhood and do inclusion support for PreK. Since being at Lackland I've done many different grades in different capacities. Originally I was a long term sub in 6th grade. I was fortunate to have an amazing team and I fell in love with Lackland.

What inspired you to teach?

I had a very difficult time in school. I did not have an inspirational teacher that lead me to this career. In fact I had a string of  teachers that left midyear for professional and personal reasons. I struggled with reading and felt embarrassed to ask for help. I was not encouraged to attend school when I was young. In fact I missed large stretches of school to travel with my family or stayed home. This lasted up through middle school.

I did very well in High School and was offered the opportunity for dual enrollment my junior year.  I enjoyed college very much. I loved learning and meeting diverse individuals. I just fell in love with learning. I was given the opportunity to explore classes freely and took things like American Sign Language, Windsurfing and Family Dynamics. I felt no pressure to take specific classes and this helped me fall in love with the learning process. I was told that if I wanted something to improve I needed to change it from inside the system. I wanted to help others fall in love with learning as well.

Have you always thought one grade level? If not, then which grade has been your favorite to teach?

I have taught PreK, kindergarten, fourth, fifth and sixth grade. I don’t have a favorite grade level to teach although right now I am enjoying early childhood very much. Each grade level has it’s  unique challenges and opportunities. The experiences have helped me see the learning process at different levels and how they fit together. I appreciate what each grade and subject does to help students have a complex understanding of subjects.

What has been the biggest challenge in your teaching career?

The biggest challenge I have found in being an educator is finding time for my family. I have an amazing husband and two fabulous kids. It is not a job that you leave the work place and stop thinking about. I think about my students currently and past often. Even in the summer I am thinking how can I improve for next year and what I need to do to better prepare my students.

If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?

I’d love to take a field trip anywhere! I’d love for us to be able to go to the children’s museum, a local farm, zoo or even the fire station. With COVID it has been difficult because hands on learning and building background knowledge are so important to learning. We try to view video clips or images of different places as well as use a few key items but it’s just not the same. My current student’s dream field trip would be to Monster Jam or a puppet show.

THANK YOU MRS. RYAN!
