Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Lackland ISD Shares TASA-CMSi Curriculum Audit Results

Lackland ISD partnered with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) to conduct a curriculum audit.  The purpose of the audit was to provide a roadmap to efficiently and effectively meet the improvement goals outlined in the 2022-2027 LISD Strategic Plan.  Lackland Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper, also wanted to ensure that district systems and processes are current and appropriately designed to institutionalize continued improvement and effective program sustainability.   Preliminary audit findings and recommendations were presented to the LISD Board of Trustees at the August board meeting.  A copy of the audit’s executive summary may be found at this link.

Today for science in third grade we did some labs. The first station was magnetism and the second station was density.  The kids used different materials to see if they floated or sunk or if they did both. With the magnetism they experimented with different magnets to test the strength of the magnet and used different  materials to see if they were magnetic or not.

Depth and Complexity Icons

All of LISD's teachers received training in Depth and Complexity through the use of icons. The icons symbols for critical thinking. To share that learning with our community, each of our monthly newsletters will feature an "Icon of the Month" so you can practice with your child(ren) at home! Each newsletter will provide an explanation of the icon selected for that month with sample questions that spark deeper thinking or complexity of a topic. We hope you will enjoy challenging yourselves as well!

The September icon is Language of Discipline. Any field (or discipline) has a set of languages that experts use in order to communicate quickly and clearly. As our students are learning more specific vocabulary in all of their new classes, consider helping them go deeper by asking some of the following questions:

What words would a ______ use to tell about _____?

What kind of specialized language is needed to define and/or describe ________ (event or situation)?

How would ______ be best described by people working in this field?

Lackland ISD Gifted and Talented Services

In alignment with the Texas State Plan for Services for Gifted and Talented Students, the mission of the gifted services in LISD is to provide learning opportunities that challenge and develop students identified for gifted services through creative, self-directed learning. This can be seen through the development of innovative projects and performances that reflect students’ individuality, as well as through honed research skills and advanced critical thinking.

Gifted and Talented services are educational interventions for students who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

Elementary: Identified students in grades K-5 are cluster grouped with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.  Services for identified Kindergarten students begin March 1 as mandated by the state.

Secondary: Identified students in grades 6-12 are provided service through Honors and AP classes with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Lesson differentiation, and participation in the projects aligned to the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) are some of the varied curricular options utilized in core GT classes.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.  Please read the Mental and Behavioral Health Tips

The return to school can be a stressful time, whether it's a child’s first day of kindergarten, a transition to middle or high school, or just the end of the freedoms of summer. It's normal for children to feel anxious about these changes. Here’s how you can help ease their worries:

*Communicate: Encourage your child to express their feelings about going back to school. Acknowledge their fears, make them feel understood, and reassure them that it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about these changes.

*Create Routines: A consistent routine fosters a sense of security in children. Establishing a regular sleep schedule, eating healthy meals, and setting aside time for homework and relaxation can help children adjust to the rhythm of the school year.

*Encourage In-person Social Interactions: Facilitate interaction with classmates to rekindle old friendships and make new ones. This may be one of the first years of schooling for many children without the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting normal social interactions. Social relationships can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Recognizing and Addressing Bullying
in Youth
Bullying looks very different today than it did 20+ years
ago. In this session we will define bullying and review
the forms of bullying commonly seen among children.
We will review some of the signs and symptoms
that can communicate that our child is a victim,
perpetrator, or in some circumstances both, to bullying.
Experiencing bullying can lead to lower mental health
quality, therefore it’s important we address the issue
when it’s first suspected. Presented by The Center for
Health Care Services.

Shame, Blame, and More of the Same
Let’s discuss breaking unhealthy patterns of behavior
and reinforcement. We will explore how our responses
shape behavior and may lead to the exact result we
are trying so hard to avoid. We will also challenge
ourselves to mindfully choose to respond in a different
way and gain a more desired outcome.

What is Gifted/Talented--Demystifying the
Identification Process
What exactly does it mean to be in Gifted and Talented
Services in Texas? You may be surprised to know
that many of the students who benefit the most from
services have not been identified. In this session, we
will explore what Gifted Services are in Texas and what
the identification process can look like in your child’s
school. We will also talk about ways to communicate
with your child’s campus for equitable identification.
