Lackland ISD Shares TASA-CMSi Curriculum Audit Results

Lackland ISD partnered with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) to conduct a curriculum audit.  The purpose of the audit was to provide a roadmap to efficiently and effectively meet the improvement goals outlined in the 2022-2027 LISD Strategic Plan.  Lackland Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper, also wanted to ensure that district systems and processes are current and appropriately designed to institutionalize continued improvement and effective program sustainability.   Preliminary audit findings and recommendations were presented to the LISD Board of Trustees at the August board meeting.  A copy of the audit’s executive summary may be found at this link.

Meet Mrs. Hassenplug!

By: Kaylea Frair, 9th grade

One of the new faces around the Stacey campus is Stephanie Hassenplug, the new PE aide.  On most days she can be found in the gym, where she also helps out the Stacey volleyball and basketball teams.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
-In my free time, I like to hang out with my family, read, and catch up on my favorite tv shows.
● Where were you born and raised?
-I was born and raised, the majority of my life, in Karnes City. It’s a small town just south of here. I lived there until the summer of my senior year and then moved to Kingsville, where I graduated and joined the Air Force.
● Where have you all lived?
-I have lived in Karnes City and Kingsville before I joined the Air Force. After joining, I’ve lived on Sheppard AFB, Eglin AFB, Kunsan AB, Sacile IT, San Quirino IT, Las Vegas NV, Fort Worth TX, Lackland AFB, Hill AFB, and now back to San Antonio.
● Favorite food?
-I don’t really have a favorite food. I’m willing to try most anything, as long as it’s not spicy.
● Dream vacation?
-If I got to go anywhere in the world, I’d love to go back to Cinque Terra in Italy. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. If I stayed in the states, I’d go to Lake Tahoe.
● Where do you feel most at home?
-I feel the most at home when I’m at my aunt’s house in Karnes City. My aunt and I are very close, so when we are over there, life feels so carefree and relaxing.
● What's your favorite thing about Lackland?
-I like Lackland because it has a small town feel to it. I loved the school so much that I wanted to work here.
● Who’s your favorite musical artist?

-My favorite musical artists are Iration and Seventeen.
● If you stayed on a deserted island and only could bring three things, what would you bring?
-I’d bring chapstick, my iPad with shows downloaded on it, and a book.
● What is a quote you live by?
-“Everything happens for a reason.” I’ve lived by this for as long as I can remember.
● Do you like to read? If so, who's your favorite author?
-I love to read! I really enjoy Bella Forrest and Cassandra Clare’s books. I also have a lot of friends in the self published community, so I read a lot from those authors as well.

Thank you, Mrs. Hassenplug!

Meet Mr. Martinez!

By: Landon Miner, junior

Enrique Martinez is the art teacher at Stacey.  He teaches JH Art to 6th, 7th & 8th graders and also has one HS Art 1 class.

Where are you from?

El Paso, TX

Where did you go to college?

Texas State, San Marcos for my BFA in studio art and UTSA for my MFA in painting

How long have you been in education and what other schools have you taught at?

This is my 17th year of teaching. I started teaching at Palo Alto, Northwest Vista College and the Southwest School of Art. I taught for 11 years in Edgewood ISD at Coronado Elementary and Edgewood Fine Arts Academy. Then for 3 years at Alamo Heights Junior School. Last year I taught art at Northwest Vista College and UTSA SW.

What is your favorite piece of art?

It’s hard to say! There are so many amazing works of art out there. But I think some of my favorite paintings are the murals of Diego Rivera. In particular, his mural titled Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, located in Mexico City. He is able to say so much with this piece and tell a great story about himself and the people of Mexico. The scale of it makes it feel as though you’re stepping into his world.

Have you ever traveled just to see a piece of art?

Yes, quite often! My travels usually center around visiting some art-related site. Most recently I traveled to the Museum of Fine Art Houston to see an M.C. Escher exhibition. I drove there and spent my day at the museum from open until closing (6 hours) mostly in that one exhibition. Then I drove back home that same day.

Do you have a favorite color?

I think I like lime green the best. I’m not sure why…maybe because it looks like it’s glowing!

What is your favorite art medium?

I use acrylic paint the most because it’s convenient. I also enjoy relief and screen printing. I like when an artist effectively combines different mediums and techniques. I like to experiment with mixed media in my work as well.

10 What is your favorite art project to do with the kids ?

I really like doing clay and ceramic projects. This seems to be a favorite among my students as well. I also really enjoy teaching printmaking, although it can be frustrating for some.

Thank you Mr. Martinez!

Tips for Parents: Anxiety

By Rachel Busman

https://www.davidsongifted.org/gifted-blog/tips-for-parents-understanding-social-anxiety/

Anxiety is a common concern for parents of children and teens. Social anxiety refers to fears related to being judged negatively or being embarrassed in social situations. Kids may experience social anxiety when asked to speak in class, when asked to express a preference to peers, when being expected to self-advocate or when part of peer interactions, like group texts or hangouts. When people feel anxious and distressed, it’s normal to attempt to alleviate that anxiety by avoiding situations or by seeking reassurance (e.g., avoiding texting peers or asking a parent to email a teacher on their behalf). While avoidance helps alleviate the immediate anxiety, it actually perpetuates the anxiety in the long run. Caregivers can support their children by validating that the fears or worries are real and also helping the child by creating opportunities to face rather than avoid situations. Validation means acknowledging that the child’s experiences are real, and that the caregiver understands them. Creating planful and gradual steps to face fears (doing exposures) can help kids see that they can do things that are hard. For example- for a student who struggles to participate in new activities, providing opportunities to participate for a brief amount of time at first, and with a familiar peer, may lead to feelings of success. Then the parent can set the expectation to participate for longer periods of time. The goal is to provide opportunities to face hard situations and get through them. When informal strategies don’t lead to alleviation of symptoms or if mood, appetite, sleep or behaviors change significantly, caregivers should seek outside support in the form of evidence-based treatment.

Tips

Validate a child? Is experiencing by first listening and then communicating? I get that this is hard.

Create several steps to get to the desired goal. For example, if the goal is for the teen to participate in a group chat, identify 3 smaller steps that incrementally get closer to the desired goal.

Express to your child that you believe in their ability to cope. Say things like, ? I know that this is hard and I am confident that you can get through it.? Lead by example- model non anxious coping by acting calm. Watch for changes in mood, sleep or behavior that persist- if they do, seek outside help.

Lackland ISD Gifted and Talented Services

In alignment with the Texas State Plan for Services for Gifted and Talented Students, the mission of the gifted services in LISD is to provide learning opportunities that challenge and develop students identified for gifted services through creative, self-directed learning. This can be seen through the development of innovative projects and performances that reflect students’ individuality, as well as through honed research skills and advanced critical thinking.

Gifted and Talented services are educational interventions for students who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

Elementary: Identified students in grades K-5 are cluster grouped with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.  Services for identified Kindergarten students begin March 1 as mandated by the state.

Secondary: Identified students in grades 6-12 are provided service through Honors and AP classes with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Lesson differentiation, and participation in the projects aligned to the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) are some of the varied curricular options utilized in core GT classes.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.  Please read the Mental and Behavioral Health Tips

The return to school can be a stressful time, whether it's a child’s first day of kindergarten, a transition to middle or high school, or just the end of the freedoms of summer. It's normal for children to feel anxious about these changes. Here’s how you can help ease their worries:

*Communicate: Encourage your child to express their feelings about going back to school. Acknowledge their fears, make them feel understood, and reassure them that it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about these changes.

*Create Routines: A consistent routine fosters a sense of security in children. Establishing a regular sleep schedule, eating healthy meals, and setting aside time for homework and relaxation can help children adjust to the rhythm of the school year.

*Encourage In-person Social Interactions: Facilitate interaction with classmates to rekindle old friendships and make new ones. This may be one of the first years of schooling for many children without the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting normal social interactions. Social relationships can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Overview of Multi-Tiered Systems
of Supports
Using a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
Framework is a common way that local education
agencies provide support to students who face challenges within the realms of academics, behavior, and
mental health. Within this framework, interventions are
provided to all students through three tiers of support.
Participants will leave this training with the understanding of the key components and processes that make
up an effective framework, so that they may be knowledgeable about the parent/guardian role.
