Club Profile: Chess Club

By: Audrey Kost, 9th grade

The Chess Club, run by Mr. Sechler is open to both junior and senior high students. The club meets every Friday after school in Mr. Sechler’s classroom (4412). With there being no requirements to join, the Chess Club offers a stress-free time, great relaxation, and time to have fun with friends and peers. This club's main focus is chess;  however, participants are welcome to play other games occasionally and they can compete in club tournaments and competitions.

Here are some quotes from the participants of the Chess Club:

- Jace Bechdel - “Think twice before you make a move.”

- Oliver Weller - “Pay attention to the other players’ facial expressions.”

- Jarred Dunn - “If you lose a queen, it’s not game over.”

- James Weller - “Chess can have a lot of power on your mindset in school and other things.”

- Alanis Garcia - “It’s something to look forward to and it’s a great way to end a Friday.”

Talking With Your Child About Uncomfortable Emotions

An article on KQED, and shared by Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT), explains the benefits of talking with kids who experience "emodiversity" - a range and abundance of both negative and positive emotions. "When parents accept their children's feelings and view emotional displays as opportunities to empathize, connect, and strategize, kids tend to have fewer emotional and behavioral problems, including issues with anger, anxiety, and acting out"

Icons of the Month-Patterns and Trends

The "Patterns" icon prompts students to look for repeating elements within a topic (ideas, events, thoughts, actions, etc.). This icon also challenges students to look for breaks in a pattern and consider the reason(s) for the break.

Sentence Starters for Patterns:

Using this pattern, what can you predict about _______?

Why do you think the main character in the story changed his routine? What effect did that have on the other characters?

The "Trends" icon prompts students to consider how a topic is currently changing and what factors may be contributing to that change.

Sentence Starters for Trends:

What social, political, technological, and popular ideas affected the knowledge about ______?

What ongoing factors have influenced ________?

Good Information

“One Pill Kills” is set up across the state to educate Texans on how to prevent, recognize, and reverse fentanyl poisonings. Students and families need to know that other drugs may contain a deadly level of fentanyl. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. It is almost impossible to tell if another drug is laced with fentanyl unless tested with a fentanyl testing strip. Parents, please see the fliers attached that gives information about fentanyl and it’s affects.

Lackland ISD Gifted and Talented Services

In alignment with the Texas State Plan for Services for Gifted and Talented Students, the mission of the gifted services in LISD is to provide learning opportunities that challenge and develop students identified for gifted services through creative, self-directed learning. This can be seen through the development of innovative projects and performances that reflect students’ individuality, as well as through honed research skills and advanced critical thinking.

Gifted and Talented services are educational interventions for students who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

Elementary: Identified students in grades K-5 are cluster grouped with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.  Services for identified Kindergarten students begin March 1 as mandated by the state.

Secondary: Identified students in grades 6-12 are provided service through Honors and AP classes with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Lesson differentiation, and participation in the projects aligned to the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) are some of the varied curricular options utilized in core GT classes.

As parents and educators, we share the goal of helping our children grow in school, at home, and in life. This includes recognizing individual growth, bridging differences, celebrating diversity, building positive relationships, providing opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills, and encouraging them to take on challenges and persevere when things get tough. Working together, we can support student growth through these formative years.

To highlight these goals, Lackland ISD will be participating in National School Psychology Week, November 6–10, 2023. The theme is  “Let’s Grow Together!”

School psychologists are members of the school team who support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach. We apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. We provide direct support and interventions to students, such as learning assessments, academic and behavioral interventions, counseling, and social skills training. We also work with families, teachers, and other educators to improve school-wide practices and policies that help make our school community a safe, supportive, and welcoming space in which all children can thrive.

Reinforcing children’s natural and learned capacity for resiliency is a primary focus of National School Psychology Week and school psychologists’ role. As parents, you know your children best and are essential to this work. There are many ways to help children take on new challenges, learn new skills, and feel valued so that they can grow as individuals and contribute to a positive school community. You can:

1. Encourage your child to set goals and to map out a plan for achieving them.

2. Help your child internalize a sense that individuals grow in their own ways, often in their own time, through engagement and interaction with their surroundings, and any forward movement is a success.

3. Emphasize that learning and growing requires trying new things and that success comes from small steps to a long-term goal.

4. Help them work through setbacks or lack of self-confidence by helping them identify negative thoughts that may suggest concerns about their ability to be successful. Instead, encourage them to see the small steps they can take to overcome obstacles and succeed.

5. Praise attempts as well as success, and make sure that you focus on the effort put forth by your child.

6. Demonstrate through your own behaviors how to try new, challenging activities as a way to grow while also having fun.

7. Find ways to celebrate diversity and accept others or take steps with your child to actively learn about others that are different from you.

8. Model the joy of learning by reading about a variety of topics with your child and let them know that you, too, are learning new things.

9. Model perseverance and problem solving when faced with challenges or difficulties.

10. Help your child develop positive relationships with peers and adults and model respectful, caring behaviors with others.

Both Nancy Garcia and Gentry Ghandour are your school psychologists.  We look forward to working with you at Lackland Independent School District so that we can help your child grow together!
