Roper. The quote, “Leadership is inspiring others to achieve, serving them so they can, and celebrating them when they do,” best defines the example of leadership we experience with Dr. Roper. He has been that leader for us. Dr. Roper encourages and empowers each member of the learning organization to take up the charge to face any challenge. He also continues to demonstrate the action of both servant and leader to help us navigate uncharted territory with continued excellence. Once a year is not sufficient to express our gratitude. We truly appreciate you every day. Thank you, Sir, for all you do. Happy Boss’s Day! ***********
Lackland ISD Recognizes National Principals Month
National Principals Month is recognized annually in October. It is a widely recognized celebration marked with national and state resolutions to highlight an appreciation for the hard work and dedication involved in the principalship. Along with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), we echo our appreciation for principals for being a guiding light during these trying times. Our elementary principal, Mrs. Leija, and secondary principal, Mr. Shelby, remain committed to exceeding expectations in the social, emotional, and academic support that we provide to our students. Mrs. Leija has served as principal of Lackland Elementary School for 12 years, and Mr. Shelby has served as principal for five years at Stacey Jr./Sr. High School. We truly appreciate what each principal contributes to Lackland ISD toward the outstanding opportunities afforded to our students and staff. The staff and leadership of Lackland ISD honor you and your efforts.
Lackland ISD Recommends Renewal of District of Innovation Plan
https://www.lacklandisd.net/about/district-of-innovation/2022-2027-doi-renewal
District and community stakeholders are encouraged to review the contents of the plan and provide feedback using the public comment feature that is also available on the district’s website.
Lackland ISD will ensure that the plan is posted for a minimum of 30 days. On November 8,2021, the district innovation plan committee will hold a public hearing to receive final input and make final plan revisions. The public hearing will be held at 3:45 p.m. in the LISD Cynthia Lyon Center.
The District of Innovation concept, passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open-enrollment charter schools. Questions concerning the DOI designation should be directed to Dr. Burnie Roper (roper.b@lacklandisd.net), Superintendent of Schools or Dr. Tonya Hyde (hyde.t@lacklandisd.net ), Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. Bouncing Back with the Book Fair By Anna Williams and Margaret Bartlow, freshman
Ready to get back to normal? Ms. Walderman is hosting an in person Book Fair October 18-22, and a virtual book fair October 14-27. They will be selling many of the same books, but the virtual fair may have a few more options. With books ranging from I Survived graphic novels to The Imposter’s Guide to Among Us to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this book fair is not something you’ll want to miss! It will be open to elementary through high school, though most of the books will be for younger students. This book fair is a much-needed respite for our students from the strict rules and frustration of COVID-19. After over a year of cancelled events and the resulting disappointment, the book fair will be another big step towards something resembling pre-COVID normalcy. Ms. Walderman said it best: “The past year and a half has equated to a lot of loss and change. The faculty and staff at Lackland ISD are working desperately to provide students with a school experience that is as “normal” as possible while still operating within our safety parameters.” While this is meant to be a fun event for students, it is understood that COVID-19 is still a threat. As a result, the book fair will differ from those of previous years in a few ways, all meant to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while still allowing students to enjoy themselves. These include a cash-free payment option called eWallet, visible pricing on the books, specific time slots for different students to come, and an entire online book fair that will be open October 14 through the 27. According to Ms. Walderman, there will be one more important change. “Obviously the biggest difference is that parents will not be able to shop with their children, which is extremely frustrating to all of us.” As a result, only books will be sold at the book fair, without the usual assortment of toys, diaries, and other items. The in-person book fair will be found in the school library from October 18 to October 22, while the virtual book fair is open between October 14 and 27. Money spent will be used to benefit the school: “... our school earns Scholastic dollars when we host these events, which will be used to invest more back into the mission of providing reading opportunities for each and every one of our Lackland students.” Come down to the book fair to not only treat yourself to a good book, but to support your school as well!

Lackland Elementary Anti-Bullying Week October 18-22, 2021
Anti-Bullying Week is a great way to get involved, take a stand against bullying and raise awareness in our school. The goal is to encourage students and staff to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on children of all ages. Our Anti-Bullying Week consists of activities that will be implemented throughout the week to promote the commitment of a violence-free school and community. We hope that you will show your support for this initiative by reinforcing with your child/children the importance of standing up for themselves and others around them. Each day throughout the week children and staff will support the Anti-Bullying initiative through various activities and theme days. Please refer to the events listed below. Thank you for helping us to teach our students to watch out for each other and stay safe!
