Month of the Military Child 2023 – Taking Care of Our Military Children

This morning parents and teachers donned their finest purple and greeted students as they came to school with cheers and purple iced donuts!

Military families move every two to three years on average, and military children change schools an average of six to nine times from the start of kindergarten to their high school graduation. This year an estimated 30 percent of military service members will move to a new installation.

The Defense Department is committed to recognizing the unique challenges of military-connected children, youth and teens and ensuring that families are aware of the full breadth of support and resources that are at the ready to serve their needs as they change schools, settle into new communities, and navigate military life in general.

"This April, we honor the 1,602,261 military children, youth and teens serving alongside our nation's service members," said Patricia Montes Barron, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Military Community and Family Policy. "Our military kids bring joy to our hearts, and we work hard to ensure they have access to the support and resources they need."

Stacey Flashback: Gabriel Charris

By: Sam Crisp, 10th grade

This is Gabriel Charris and his family. (wife Rachael and daughter Molli) He graduated from Stacey in 2011. Rachael was a member of the Stacey Class of 2012. We decided to do newsletters on Stacey’s graduates, and I landed on Gabriel. I asked him some questions and found out what his feelings about Stacey were and how he is doing now and more. These are the results:

How long has it been since you attended Stacey?

I graduated in 2011.

What was your favorite class or classes when you attended Stacey?

My favorite class was German, it was there where I met my wife, plus I love German.

Do you miss going to school here?

I do, life was much simpler when I was just worried about high school.

What’s your favorite primary color? (Red, Yellow, Blue)

Red, all the way.

What is your current line of work?

I am a CGIC (crime gun intelligence coordinator), I work as a contractor for the BATFE.

If you could do high school all over again, would you?

Yes, if not only to enjoy falling in love with my wife again.

What’s your favorite time of the day?

The evening.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, we have 2 dogs. A mini Australian Shepherd and a mixed Beagle.

Do you have a secret hobby that you would be willing to share?

I don't, besides firearm collecting and shooting.

Thank you Gabriel!

Meet Mrs. Salaz!

By: Haiden Berringer, 9th grade

Where did you grow up?

l like to say that I grew up all over, because I grew up as a military child. My Dad served 28 years in the Air Force. However, I was born in Rome, New York, and San Antonio has always been "home base".

Where did you go to high school?

I went to high school in Germany. I attended Ramstein American High School on Ramstein AFB. Go Royals!

Where did you go to college? What was your major?

I attended UTSA and got my Bachelor of Arts degree in Education for Generalist EC-6.

What is your position here at Lackland? How long have you worked for the district?

I am a Paraprofessional at Stacey Jr/Sr High School for SPED. This is my 9th school year working for the district as a Para. Although, while still in college, I did two years of substitute teaching at Lackland Elementary.

What is your favorite thing about Lackland ISD?

My favorite thing about Lackland ISD is the military connection, student diversity, and my SPED family. I work with a great group of people.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Italy. I love a good slice of pizza, and some pasta.

What is your favorite food?

Nachos, without question. Chips and queso do not disappoint.

Do you have a favorite musical artist(s)?

I do not have a favorite artist. However, 80s rock and 90s alternative are my favorite genre.

Do you have any pets?

I have two fur babies, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. Leia is 16 years old, and Luke is 14 years old. They are my babies and mean the world to me. Both were adopted, are spoiled (as they should be), and I make sure they are living their best lives every day.

THANK You Mrs. Salaz!

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Imagine a bird that weighs less than one-fifth of an ounce (6.2 grams) and can fly non-stop for 500 miles (805 kilometers) in one day.  The ruby-throated hummingbird accomplishes that feat every year when it flies to its winter home.  The main reason it's a non-stop flight is because the bird flies over the Gulf of Mexico.  The hummingbird is an omnivore, feeding mainly on flower nectar but also on tree sap from holes drilled by woodpeckers.  Tasty!!  Amazingly, the hummingbird only consumes between 3.1 and 7.6 calories a day---that's equal to just one or two M&Ms.

Families, staff, and community members gathered Wednesday night to discuss the new STAAR redesign and write encouraging notes to 3rd-5th grade students.

Over 250 notes were written!

An informational meeting was held Friday morning at Second Cup of Coffee for Dyslexia and ESL. Identification aspects as well as information about programs used in Dyslexia classes were shared. English as a Second Language topics included areas of study, types of assessment and research. Attendees included parents with students in these programs, and some parents who wanted to learn more about them. Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Mihalko thank all who attended.

This week during our Hearts Apart small groups, we created a “While You Were Gone…” box. This box is the perfect place for students to keep memories or keepsakes so that when your military loved one gets home, they can share all of these things with them without having to worry about forgetting!

Our third-grade class loved learning about the planets at Scobee Planetarium

4th graders presented their version of "Night at the Museum" covering Texas history.
