Veterans Day 2020

Alternate text

Lackland Independent School District will observe Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, as a student and staff holiday.  The observance of Veterans Day is significant to us and our military-connected community.  The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, and the 30th anniversary of both the end of the Panama Invasion and the beginning of Desert Shield.  Each of these milestones in our nation’s history was supported by veterans with tremendous sacrifice.  This year’s Veterans Day Vision is “Veteran’s in Focus.”  The corresponding statement from the Veteran’s Administration establishes this year’s purpose:

“Looking back on centuries of Veteran’s service and sacrifice and what we have learned from the past, we must always maintain the vision for the future of Veterans.  Putting the Veteran at the center, on Veterans Day we continue to honor all who served while focusing on the needs of the next generation of Veterans.”

Veterans have and continue to contribute to American society in many ways and well beyond their time in active duty.  Many veterans serve today at Lackland Independent School District as teachers and staff.  Each campus will recognize the contributions of veterans through special lessons and activities.  We honor each veteran for their commitment to preserving the nation's core values through dedicated service that never ends.

He has received the Arizona Excellence Scholarship Award.

Congratulations, Jaiden!

If you are looking to make an impact on a child living in a world of uncertainty and need, Mrs. Duron’s Community Service Class has an opportunity for you. We will be donating to Samaritan's Purse, a charity that collects and sends (wrapped) shoeboxes full of essentials and useful items to less fortunate areas of the world. Participating is easy! Go to samaritanspurse.org/occ to find detailed information about what to include in the shoeboxes; toys, school supplies, non-liquid hygiene items, crafts, accessories, and small personal notes and photos of yourself to help personalize the experience for the child. A $9 donation is also encouraged to help cover the long-distance shipping costs. If you cannot shop for items to fill a box, that’s okay! Donations can be dropped off at Mrs. Duron’s classroom, the drop off deadline is November 18. Our goal is 100 boxes, so tell your friends and family as well!  You can also donate money to go towards shipping costs or make an online shoebox for $25. The link to make an online shoebox is:  https://build-a-shoebox.samaritanspurse.org/goal/view/abb9d4f9-b226-449e-a5a6-88eea96c4e69  Again, please drop off any donations on or before November 18 in order to get them to the children’s communities in time!

On Friday, October 30th, Mrs. Duron’s Family and Community Service class went to Willie Cortez and participated in the first ever trunk or treat. As they set up their stand, many happy faces drove by and picked up there Halloween snacks. The in person class dressed up in their Halloween costumes as well as the online learners, who even went as far as making there own homemade costumes. We are glad to see that our contribution to the elderly brought a smile and a laugh.

Thank you, Mother Nature!

Think of all of the things around you that are made of cotton:  your jeans, your shirts and socks, the sheets on your bed, the towels in your bathroom and kitchen.  More than 133 million pounds of cotton are produced around the world every day.  U.S. paper money is not made of paper but of 75% cotton and 25% linen.

Fun Fact:  One bale of cotton can make 215 pairs of jeans!

Imagine a world without telephones!!!  At the age of 27, Alexander Graham Bell successfully communicated to his assistant in a different room over his "electrical speech machine".  He went on to found the first Bell Telephone Company and launched a whole new American industry.

Fast Fact:

The Truth about the Trades: How to create a
great career and pay for college
How would you like your child to learn a skill that will
help them make 2-3 times the minimum wage shortly
out of high school and create a way to have college
completely paid for? Many parents think they have
to choose between having their child learn a trade
or go to college. The truth is the trades can lead to a
direct path to college ensuring your child has the work
experience to secure a job after. Learn how the trades
have changed over the years focusing on growth and
development of their top talent and creating multiple
career pathways that lead to high-wage jobs for those
on the path to college and those who are not.
