Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He was a Baptist minister and leader of the civil rights movement, championing justice and equality from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. As he said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Dr. King was also a strong advocate of change through nonviolent civil actions based on his Christian values. He was a great speaker, and his powerful words still resonate with us today.
The third Monday in January is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (often abbreviated to “MLK Day”). It has been a federal holiday since 1986. This means that it is an observed holiday for federal employees, as well as for many schools and businesses. This also means that the holiday does not always fall on Martin Luther King Jr.’s true birth date, January 15. This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed on Monday, January 16, 2023
In 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded Nobel Peace Prize at the young age of 35 for his peaceful campaign against racism. He turned over the prize money of $54,123 to support the civil rights movement. Here is his acceptance speech.
“Peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.” –Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–68)
On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated while speaking in Tennessee in support of the struggling garbage workers of that city. It had been only 4 years earlier that he had received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign against racism. https://www.almanac.com/content/when-martin-luther-king-jr-day |

Much of the feedback from our school climate surveys over the past few years have highlighted the need for better communication between the district and our parents. To meet that need, we are very excited to announce that we have rolled out ParentSquare!
ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to: *Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app *View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events *Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents
For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.

Stacey Basketball vs Lee Academy Wolfpack By: Samuel Crisp, sophomore Friday, January 6th 2023, Stacey faced off against Lee Academy also known as “The Wolfpack”. We had our JV & Varsity Boys and Girls basketball teams go head to head with them and the results were great! Our JV Boys played first absolutely dominating Lee Academy. Our JV boys had set us up with a victory for the night.
The girls team played next and it was a hectic game. Lee academy was up in points for the majority of the game; however, our girls team pulled the comeback of the century and snatched the lead roughly 3 minutes into the last quarter. We had lost that lead a minute later, but regained it within the last moments of the game and pulled to a slim lead to gain another victory for the night with the score of 23-21.
Unfortunately, our varsity boys had to play really tough opponents and we ended up losing 50-57 as a final score. However, one of our varsity players, Nathan Lovick despite the loss had an amazing performance with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. Nathan, after the game, claimed the reason he thinks they lost was because “we as a team were shooting at a low field goal percentage. If we had been a little more accurate with our shooting we could have easily pulled off the win." That was Nathan’s take on the game. This season seems promising, so we wish all of you good luck in the games you have left to conquer!

Drilling Derrick at Spindletop Hill |
|
|
On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produced an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum, which until that time had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps, would become the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes; coal-powered forms of transportation including ships and trains would also convert to the liquid fuel.
Crude oil, which became the world’s first trillion-dollar industry, is a natural mix of hundreds of different hydrocarbon compounds trapped in underground rock. The hydrocarbons were formed millions of years ago when tiny aquatic plants and animals died and settled on the bottoms of ancient waterways, creating a thick layer of organic material. Sediment later covered this material, putting heat and pressure on it and transforming it into the petroleum that comes out of the ground today.
And now you know the rest of the story!
