Each committee’s point of contact is listed with the committee description if you have additional questions.
Please read each description and let us know if you are interested in supporting the committee or learning more about it. School Health Advisory Council

The council will address the continued implementation of a coordinated health program, including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, a healthy school environment, staff health promotion, and family/community involvement. This committee must have more parent representation than district staff. The SHAC meets at least four times during the school year. Two meetings occur after-school, and two meetings occur during the school day. Tentative meeting dates are October 5, December 7, February 8, and April 12.

The AVID elective classes held their first family night on Sept. 8 to present what AVID is to their parents and show off the project they had been working on. What started off as a focused note-taking activity turned into an inquiry project. The essential question was, "Who was Virginia Allred Stacey, and why is our campus named after her?" It turns out that if you try and search her name on the internet, the only thing that really pops up are school related events.
Students took notes on the information they were able to find in old year books going back to the 1970's. Mrs. Palmerton, one of our librarians, was able to find a ton of primary and secondary resource artifacts that included newspaper articles, campaign flyers, scrapbooks and more. She was also able to reach out to her contacts at Trinity University and the base archivists to obtain even more artifacts for our kids to use to put pieces of their information and timelines together.
Retired Lackland Jr/Sr HS and Stacey teacher, Carol Frawley, provided the students with more pictures, her resume and articles. This was especially helpful for the students to complete some missing pieces in their timelines. Former teachers and current substitute teachers, Beverly Wann and Doug Poludniak, as well as a current custodian, Tommy Estrada, have provided their personal stories with their experience working for Mrs. Stacey that were shared with students to help in their research.
The cherry on top was their special guest, Darby Stacey. She is retired Air Force and one of the daughters of Virginia Allred Stacey. She enjoyed the students' presentation where the information gained in their research and notes was applied about her mother's accomplishments and dedication to the district. She answered questions that the students still had and was able to add her own perspective to her mother's persistence towards making the buildings we have now on the Stacey campus come into existence.
The connections made by the students from this project has led them to not only have a deeper appreciation of their school's namesake, but to plan their first community service project. Mrs. Stacey had a vision of a "Camelot" environment for all of the military connected children that passed through this district. She wanted a lot of green space with flowers to be enjoyed by all. The AVID students will be partnering up with Ms. Polis and the Garden Club to work on the flower beds already built around campus and want to eventually build more. We will also be partnering up With Mrs. Duron's Community Service class to bring back and old tradition of celebrating Mrs. Stacey's birthday in April with cupcakes for all.
Stacey students can be looking forward to some fun fact Friday announcements to share with the rest of the student body from their findings. |

The monarch butterfly is a milkweed butterfly. Other common names, depending on region, include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black-veined brown butterfly. The monarch is amongst the most familiar of North American butterflies and an iconic pollinator. The monarch butterfly is not an especially effective pollinator of milkweeds.
Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm, or about 3.5 inches . The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller and has an extra black stripe across each hindwing. The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn instinctive migration from the northern and central United States and southern Canada to Florida and Mexico.
During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multigenerational return north. The western North American population of monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains often migrates to sites in southern California, but has been found in overwintering Mexican sites, as well. In 2009, monarchs were reared on the International Space Station, successfully emerging from pupae located in the station's Commercial Generic Bioprocessing Apparatus.
Imagine that! Monarch butterflies in space!!!
