Lackland ISD Celebrates New Teachers and Mentors in an Annual Graduation Ceremony

Lackland ISD celebrated teachers who completed their first year of teaching with Lackland ISD in a graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 16, 2019.  Each year, teachers who are new to Lackland, regardless of the number of years they have taught, are matched with a mentor to support their induction to our learning environment and team.  Their mentors support their understanding of the district’s vision, mission, and beliefs.  Mentors also support new teachers in their ability to access resources to ensure continued exemplary instructional programs.  Mentees shared sentiments with their mentors in an exercise that challenged them to describe their experiences using one word.  Mentors were recognized for being phenomenal, available, fantastic, experienced, caring, and friends.  Dr. Roper thanked the mentees for joining our team and for making fantastic contributions.  He also thanked the mentors for investing in those that are new to the learning organization to ensure that each day is one in which they feel supported and appreciated. Mentors were also recognized as dedicated leaders who already take on tremendous responsibilities in other areas. Each mentor presented a 2018-2010 graduation medallion to their assigned mentee.

Interview: Mrs. Wreyford

By: Kaitlyn Maldonado,senior

Congratulations to instructional technologist Mrs. Lesley Wreyford, who is retiring after 17 years at LISD.

Image

1. How long have you been at Lackland ISD?

I came to Lackland ISD in 2002. I interviewed for an instructional technology position when the satellite TV web mastering course I taught at the Region 20 Education Service Center was cancelled. Even though I didn’t get the job, they hired me as a fifth grade teacher. I taught fifth grade for two years and had another opportunity to interview for an instructional technology job. I’ve been an instructional technologist at LISD since 2004.

2. What other districts have you worked in before?

Before I was unbelievably lucky and joined the LISD family, I taught in Olton and Plainview Texas in the Panhandle. There are more cows than people there!

3. What is your next big plan after you retire?

Besides spending more time trying to keep up with my husband (not an easy task) I have started a contract training and consulting business. I will do teacher training for some educational technology companies I have done training for here at Stacey.  My husband is a photographer, (randywreyford.com), is a dealer for a feral hog trap company (@swineswatter), and builds polycarbonate enclosures for an experimental aircraft called an Air Cam. (@texasaircamairforce, and #thegreataircamadventure) I’ll help him with those endeavors. See what I mean about trying to keep up with him? We have a ranch outside of Junction, Texas. I plan to get up every morning we are there and ride at least one of our 5 horses to get ready to compete in several equine events.

4. What will you miss most about Stacey High?

I know this sounds like a cliché, but I will miss seeing the students. The reason I became a teacher is to work with kids. I have missed having classes with “my own” students! I hope to substitute teach at Stacey!

5. What surprised you the most about Stacey High?

Not sure I can answer this question, I’ve been here too long to be surprised and don’t remember if I was ever surprised!

6. What’s the most amazing piece of tech you’ve seen here?

Teachers! Educational technology is not about the devices we have; it is about the way teachers use the devices with students. You have some amazing teachers willing to reach out of their comfort zone and allow you to interact with the curriculum with the tech tools you use in your personal lives every day. Those opportunities will set you up to learn how to use devices that haven’t been invented yet to be productive adults.

7. What’s one place you want to visit that you haven’t ?

Not just one. Who can decide on just one? I would like to go to the entire North West US and New England and pretty much anyplace else on the planet! Maybe off the planet! I enjoy travelling and enjoy planning and research for trips.

8. What’s one thing that would make Lackland ISD better?

A Technology Center! I hear that there are plans to build one. I suggested that the building be named the Wreyford Technology Center. (That’s a joke)

9. How many years did you work here?

Seventeen years! Longer than all the students have been alive.

10. What has changed the most since you started at Stacey?

The changes in teaching and learning in the 25 years of my career have been fascinating. From no computers in the classroom, collecting and setting up all the huge grade level desktops and CRTs in my 5th grade room in the 4400 building, managing various iterations of the laptop program, to the 1:1 iPad program; the greatest change has been in the kids. You all differ greatly from my first students in 1995. That is a good thing! You live in a very different world that has different challenges and expectations.

11. Where have you lived?

I was born in the Texas Panhandle but grew up in Walnut Creek, California. I went to high school in San Francisco. I have also lived in Maryland, and Dallas and Houston, Texas.

12. Tell us about your family.

I am married to Randy Wreyford and we have three great kids. Wayne Norfleet, of Midland, step-kids, Natalie Cruz (husband Rod) of Frisco, and Nathan Wreyford (wife Christina) of Austin. Randy and I have eight grandchildren, Julia Cruz (UNT), Cameron Cruz (TAMU Corps), Nico Cruz (TAMU Corps), Alex Cruz, Miles Miller, Mason Miller, Anna Wreyford and Liam Wreyford. You can follow our dog Waldo on Instagram @the.real.waldo.the.wonderdog.

13. Were you planning on retiring or was this a surprise?

I have been planning to retire when eligible for retirement. I love my job and the people I work with, but am looking forward to spending more time with my husband and family.

Thank you Mrs. Wreyford!

“An interview with Stacey Coach & Elementary Vice Principal

   Ms. Amber Greeness”

Image

Q: Where are you from and did you always know that’s you always wanted to work in education?

A: I was born and raised a military brat and yes, I knew I wanted to work in education since I was in first grade. My first grade teacher really made a difference in my life because she helped me with my struggle in reading and showed me how much of a difference someone could make in someone’s life

Q: What sports have you coached throughout your career and what was your favourite sport to play in high school\college

A: I played softball in high school and college and I actually coached softball but I’ve coached soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball and track.

Q: How long have you been at Stacey and what are some major highlights or most memorable moments from your time here?

A: This is my 14th year here at Stacey. You know, I’ve coached a lot of teams here at Stacey and having a team  can be hard being at a military base because kids move around so much, but I think the best experiences are being able to create good and lasting relationships with the kids.

Q: You coach Track here at Stacey, what is your favorite part  about coaching Track and what are your goals for next year’s team?

A: Besides being able to build good relationships with kids, I also like to push them to see how far they can get with something. Sometimes when you keep pushing someone to do more or work harder, they end up doing things they didn’t think they could do and I like seeing them build their confidence by doing that. As for next year’s team, I’d like to at least make it to regionals but it would be great if we could make it further next year

Q: Lastly, you’ve had the opportunity to be in the high school and elementary school setting and have seen many kids come and go, is there any piece of advice that you would give to students about life choices and\or success?

A: I always like to tell kids to control what you can control because that’s really all you can do. If you control your reactions to things then you stay in control of yourself and you don’t allow for someone else to have control over you. With that, you have to take responsibility for your choices as well.

Thank you Ms. Greeness!
