Senior Spotlight: Lauren Sawvel
By: Helena Sawvel, Senior

Lauren Sawvel is a senior here at Virginia Allred Stacey Junior-Senior High School. She is a hard-working and motivated student, taking AP and honors courses earning nearly straight A’s in all of her classes. I recently asked her some questions about her post-high school plans, the kinds of activities that she has been involved with during high school, her most memorable moments at Stacey, and more. Here is what she had to say:

Q: What are your after-high school plans?
A: “My plan after high school is to attend UTSA here in San Antonio with a major in cybersecurity! I also plan on joining AFROTC, which may provide a possible career opportunity through the military if I enjoy the program.”

Q: How long have you been going to Stacey?
A: “I have been a student at Stacey for three years, from 10th-12th grade!”

Q: What were your favorite and least favorite classes?
A: “My favorite classes that I have taken are AP Computer Science A, yearbook, AP Environmental Science, and band! My least favorite class that I have taken is physics as we had to take it online this year and didn’t get to participate in labs.”

Q: What kinds of clubs and activities were you involved in?
A: “Throughout high school I have been involved in a lot of activities, but I will share some of my favorites! In 9th grade I was a part of the JROTC program and competed in Honor Guard competitions. I love playing the trumpet, and have been playing in band since the 7th grade! Running has also been a passion of mine, and I have been a member of the track and cross country teams as a long distance runner. When I moved here to Stacey I was introduced to CyberPatriot, and I really fell in love with the hands-on experience in protecting a network of virtual operating systems. This club sparked my interest in cybersecurity, and really inspired me to pursue a career through STEM. S2S is another club I really enjoy as you are able to assist new students transition to our school, and welcome them into a friendly environment — all the while
making new friends!”

Q: What is the most interesting or funny thing that you have experienced while at Stacey?
A: “I would say the most interesting thing that I have experienced at Stacey is being a part of the cross country team. I have so many funny memories of all of us at the meets and practice — they really made my senior year a special one. Even after the season is over, they continuously make a positive impact on my life and are truly an amazing group who can persevere through anything. You guys are the best!”

Q: What advice would you give to current Stacey students who aren’t graduating yet?

A: “Balance is key! Make sure you balance your time with school and extracurriculars so that you don’t overwhelm yourself. You can do whatever you put your mind to!”

Q: If you could go back in time and talk to your freshman self, what would you say?
A: “Don’t take AP Environmental Science as a freshman.”

Q: What is something that you are going to miss once you graduate?
A: “I am going to miss everyone that I have met at Stacey; it will be hard parting from you all.”

Q: What was your most favorite grade in high school and why?
A: “My favorite grade in high school has to be senior year. I’ve made so many memories and am appreciative of the time I’ve spent in somewhat normality from the impact of COVID.”

Thank you, Lauren, for letting me interview you!

Congratulations Ms. Street!

By; Sophia Mendez, freshman

Ms.Street will be deeply missed by students and co-workers. I, being one of her students this year, really haven’t got to know her since she is retiring this year, but she has made learning easier for everyone even with everything going on this year. Ms. Street answered a few questions I had for her and I learned something about my teacher before she left so you get to know the same!

What was your favorite thing about teaching at Stacey?

“My favorite thing about teaching at Stacey is teaching Military Brats. I was one myself growing up so I feel right at home amongst students.”

What will you do after retirement?

“My short term plan after retirement is to spend a little time traveling and visiting family. After that, I’m sure I’ll have to get a job of some sort but plan to get one closer to home and not deal with HWY 90 traffic.”

How long have you been teaching?

“This is my 28th year of teaching. I served as a substitute for Medina Valley a semester before that and of course did student teaching in Western PA the semester prior to that.”

Have you taught anything else besides math?

“I taught strictly Math, specifically 8th grade and Algebra Pre-AP (also 8th grade) but a year or so of 7th thrown in for the first 13 years of my career. When I came to Lackland I took a 6th grade Math position but since it was part of our elementary campus I also had to teach SFA Reading and Social Studies. At one point Mrs. Leija decided that we would be self-contained classrooms so I taught all subjects that year and also the one year I taught 5th grade.”

What was your favorite year at Stacey?

“Surprisingly enough, as much as I love teaching high school, my first year teaching 6th grade was a very memorable year. I also completely loved all the content in 5th grade. I admit to having struggled with Science but luckily I have a great friend who knows her stuff and I've never been afraid to ask for help. Thanks to Mrs. Ryan and many, many hours spent after school on Friday's I was able to persevere and teach it successfully - labs and all.”

What were your greatest accomplishments here at Stacey?

“My greatest accomplishment here at Stacey was surviving a self-contained classroom and learning how to teach new subjects.

Why are you retiring?

“Honestly, I'm retiring because I'm tired. It's just time. As anyone in any of my classes can tell you, it's been a rough year due to some (minor but many) health challenges.”

What are your best memories of teaching?

“My best memories of teaching always have to do with students I've had over the years. I have always thrived on interacting with my  students and watching them interact with each other. I have missed that since it seems to have almost disappeared since we had to distance ourselves during COVID.”

Senior Signing Day!!

By: Kyrie Yarbrough, Freshman

On Friday, May 6, 2022, during flex period, 34 seniors and their families gathered in the auditorium for Senior Signing Day. Mr. Shelby and Mrs. MK announced the class valedictorian and salutatorian: Terence Cunningham and Moira O’Malley. Those two, as well as Helena Sawvel, were presented UIL awards. (pictured above)

After that, the seniors lined up alphabetically and Mrs. MK said their name, what college their going to, and whether they’re going into the military. The colleges were local and distant, including UTSA, Texas A&M- San Antonio, Ohio State, University of the Cumberlands, St. Mary’s, UT Austin, Louisiana Tech, Penn State, UNT, Texas Tech, Central Arkansas, Palo Alto and others. Several students have enlisted in the USAF.

After Mrs. MK was done speaking, the senior signed a poster acknowledging their post high school goals. Seniors and their families headed to the Lyon Center for delicious small sandwiches, cookies and refreshments.

Senior Spotlight: Parker Archibald

By: Sam Crisp, freshman

This is Parker, a senior attending Stacey with a bright future ahead of him!  He is 18 years old with great grades and has experienced all four years of high school here at Stacey, so I asked him some questions about his future, his past, and his experience at Stacey. These were the results:

What have you liked most about school?

My favorite part of school was the time I shared with my friends over the past few years.

Have you given any thought about college? If so, have you been accepted or have you applied to any?

I plan on attending college after I graduate. I have been accepted into Baylor University, Florida State University, University of South Carolina, University of Mississippi, and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

What has been your favorite class throughout your years at school?

My favorite class of all time would probably be Choir

What’s your favorite backpack brand?

Nike backpacks are solid, but Vans backpacks are pretty good too.

What are your thoughts as you approach the end of your senior year?

Maybe that these past 4 years went by WAY too fast, or “Can I get a repeat please?”.

How would you react if the lights went out?

I’m not really scared of the dark, so I'd probably just take an opportunity to catch a nap or something.

How fast can you run if you were being chased?

Depends on who or what’s chasing me, but as a general answer I’d say pretty fast.

Do you think you’re ready for what’s to come?

Eeeeeehhh, I'm not really sure to be honest. I think I’ll be fine though.

What job are you planning on getting now that you’re graduating?

Not sure, I'll probably focus on college unless I really need to get one.

What’s your favorite fast food meal?

Definitely the Nathanial Higglebottoms meal with silly sauce on the side.

Thanks again Parker for taking the time to answer these questions for us.  We wish you luck and I hope you have had a great high school experience! I also love silly sauce! Hope you have a great time at college!

TUCKER VISITS STACEY

Stacey Jr/Sr High School students and staff were treated to a visit from Natasha McMillan and Tucker on Tuesday.  Tucker is a therapy dog from PAWS for Service that visits schools, hospitals, nursing homes, universities, and veterans’ services. The PAWS dog teams make over 300 visits a month to various locations.  Our students and staff enjoyed visiting with Tucker.  The counseling department hopes to make this a recurring event for our Stacey students next school year.

Texas Railroad History

RAILROADS Develop in Texas:

Transportation was a major problem facing early settlers in Texas. As late as 1850, the settled area of the state was largely confined to the river bottoms of East and South Texas and along the Gulf Coast. Although steamboat navigation was common on the lower stretches of a number of such rivers as the Rio Grande, Brazos, and Trinity, Texas rivers were not deep enough for dependable year-round transportation.

Roads were either poor or nonexistent and virtually impassable during wet weather. Ox carts hauling three bales of cotton could only travel a few miles a day and the cost of wagon transport was twenty cents per ton mile. Many proposals to improve internal transportation were both considered and attempted during the period of the Republic of Texas and early statehood. These included river improvements, canals, and plank roads in addition to railroads.

It was the railroads that made the development of Texas possible, and for many years railroad extension and economic growth paralleled each other.
