Like many public schools throughout the nation, Lackland Independent School District will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 20, 2020. This year’s recognition marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the "I Have A Dream" speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King died, a campaign was started for his birthday to become a holiday to honor him. After the first bill was introduced, trade unions lead the campaign for the federal holiday. It was endorsed in 1976. Following support from the musician Stevie Wonder with his single "Happy Birthday" and a petition with six million signatures, the bill became law in 1983. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, although it was not observed in all states until the year 2000. Several students, parents, and staff members came together to talk about goals, dreams, and future accomplishments. This fun crafting project fostered meaningful conversations and encouraged creativity amongst attendees. There were several athletic goals from students and a few parents wanted to focus on family togetherness and self-care. Families left with a handout on how to create an "action plan" based on their Vision Boards. Overall the night was a success and we are looking forward to our next Let's Talk event!
